This may be my favorite Nightwish song/performance. It is entirely personal to Tuomas and was written long before Floor joined the band. However, she does what few others can do: she finds the soul of a song and channels an amazing amount of empathy every time she sings. Such a gift. And this video is one of their best gifts to all of us. Thanks for this one!

Thank you for a beautiful and insightful reaction. One of my top 5 Nightwish songs. Great job on picking up on the emotion. One of the more personal songs for Tuomas and the fans. An old song written by Tuomas when he was young. Inspired by the question what would you say if you knew you were going to die tomorrow. Tuomas has said this song was a way of thanking all those who deserve his thanks and a piss off to all those who deserve it as well. To quote him “This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world." and "The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul.”
Tuomas often uses the dead boy as a symbol of the loss of childhood innocence and imagination that we experience as we grow into adulthood. When you hear dead boy or poet in his lyrics he is usually referring to himself. He also has a strong connection to the ocean and sees it as a place of peace and tranquility. A refugee from the modern world. So in this song Tuomas is saying that he no longer lives for himself or his friends but only for his music. He puts all his feelings into the music and his music is what gives his life meaning. He tries to make his life better but can never get back to the innocence of his youth. He wants to be loved but can't connect with people. He asks that they remember his music, not him, after he is gone. Thus a lonely soul, an ocean soul. In one of the spoken word sections Tuomas quotes from Shakespeare's sonnet 72. "I live no more to shame nor me nor you.” Appropriately, this sonnet is part of a series about a poet who, feeling shame and worthlessness, wishes to be forgotten after death. Note that on the video wall behind the band the boy is holding up his arms to several swans. In Finnish mythology swans are the creatures that guide your soul to the afterlife.
I will also recommend Shoemaker next. From their most recent album, Human Nature. One of my other top 5 Nightwish songs as well. Incredibly challenging for Floor to sing. When it was first released the band didn't think they would be able to perform it live. Supposedly when Floor first saw the vocal lines she said, where I am supposed to breathe?. The band and Floor were able to perfect their performances for their live shows and it was a big part of their Human Nature setlist. My favorite is the lyric video for the epic visuals to go along with the epic song but the live versions from Hellfest or Deichbrand are stunning as well. Perhaps a double reaction? Quick background on Shoemaker. One of the founders of planetary science, after his death a portion of his ashes were placed in a capsule and placed in a crater (his specialty was studying impact craters from meteorites) named for him on the moon. He is the only human whose remains are on another celestial body. There is a spoken word section performed by Tuomas's wife Johanna Kurkela (great singer in her own right) that is a quote from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet that was actually engraved on Shomaker's capsule that is on the moon.

Swan's are important in Finnish mythology. The swan was the divine messenger between the living and the dead. Dead Boy's Poem has lots of swans represented on screen. The band is Finnish, their current singer Floor, is Dutch. Their first singer (Tarja) was Finnish, their second (Annette) was from Sweden.

Tuomas wrote this song when he was 22(-ish), just after Nightwish' popularity exploded. All of a sudden he is the pivotal point of a multi million dollar industry. The pressure to write new songs each better then the one before is huge. He has to make tough choices, taking his childhood innocence he holds so dear. (The boy Tuomas no longer exists, therefor the boy is dead) And how is he ever to find true love, now he has been assigned this god-like status. All he wanted is is to write good music, but now he got exactly what he wished for, he feels it came with a price.
In the end it shows Tuomas has not just defined Nightwish, Nightwish has now also shaped Tuomas.

My parents lived by the lake. There are always swans in the lake in the summer by their peer, but they never came off the water to their shore...
But when my father slept away peacefully, surrounded by whole family, under the window opening to the lake... it was the only time when the swans came close to the house, the only time ever on this occasion...
We are finns, no one needed to say anything... we all knew the mythology... the meaning of this happening... my mother wanted to say something but couldn´t... it was so beautiful while sad at the same time.

A little Nightwish trivia. The 2nd verse is making references to other Nightwish compositions.
Wrote for the eclipse "Sleeping Sun".
Wrote for the virgin, "Passion and the Opera".
Died for the beauty the one in the garden, "Gethsemane".
"Created a kingdom, reached for the wisdom", I think may be a reference to Tuomas himself. He created a Kingdom "Nightwish", he reached for the Wisdom, trying to express with his poetry the yearning to know the unknown. "Failed in becoming a god" he failed to become the god that his fans worshipped as he is but a mortal man.
This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas inner child speaking.
When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..."
Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side.
In archaeological excavations done in Karelia, a child was found and its body was laying upon a wing of a swan. In Finnish mythology and folklore, the swan was the divine messenger between the living and the dead. When a swan dropped its head below the surface, people of old times believed that it was communicating to the spirit world.
Killing swans was a terrible crime because it was as bad as murdering a human. Punishments for killing swans were severe, the usual penalty was death.
Swan song often symbolizes an artist´s last performance but for a long time all across the world all the way to the 17th century it was believed that swans only sang when they died.
A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny.
Here are the spoken words from Dead Boy's Poem.
    "If you read this line
Remember not the hand that wrote it
    Remember only the verse
Songmaker's cry, the one without tears
For I've given this its strength
And it has become my only strength
Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality
Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew The sweet piano writing down my life"
"Teach me passion, for I fear it's gone
Show me love, hold the lorn
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me
    I'm sorry
Time will tell, this bitter farewell
I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you
And you I wish I didn't feel for you anymore"
    A lonely soul
    An ocean soul

That is really cool information, that they referenced other songs! I guess I'm gonna have to work through those four next, huh?
And thanks for the extra explanation about the swans. I didn't realize they were as important to Finnish people as they are to British (Doesn't the Queen own all their swans? And it's illegal to kill them too)

    • @Thorgrim247

Today, the British Monarch retains the right to ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water, but King Charles III exercises his ownership only on certain stretches of the Thames and its surrounding tributaries. The water imagery has to do with Tuomas' love for marine biology which he was studying before he formed Nightwish. He incorporated that into his poetry and shows it in his visuals when they perform live with the screens behind them.
You will find that most of their songs talk about water, oceans, and waterfalls and if they don't, they are most likely incorporated in the visuals.

I see this as a depiction of some of Tuomas' life.
The part of the lyrics where it says...
    "Never sigh for better world
It's already composed, played and told
Every thought the music I write
Wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin
Died for the beauty the one in the garden
Created a kingdom, reached for the wisdom
Failed in becoming a god "
The song Tuomas wrote for the Eclipse, called Sleeping Sun is referenced...a gorgeous ballad.
You need to listen to "Gethsemane".... it describing the suffering of Jesus....and from what I gather...Tuomas' disappointment.
Really... One needs to sit down with Toumas and have him explain this song!

Floor, here in this song, is the living embodiment of the Divine Feminine. It’s because of that the song hits with the force that it does.
One more thing - as others have mentioned, this song is HUGELY personal to Tuomas. As he’s stated, “the mother of all Nightwish songs”. To that, the lines “Wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin, died for the beauty, the one in the garden”, etc. all refer to songs he’s written or lyrical ideas he’s conveyed. “Wrote for the eclipse” is a direct reference to Sleeping Sun, for instance.

Checking the time in Tuomas' life, when he wrote a song, could also offer extra information.
Esp. for lines like: "I wish, I wouldn't feel for YOU anymore...". So he was not yet over "time to NEVER hold our love" (from Ghost love-score). Therefore his regular use of minor notes like here, too

Dead Boy is used by by Tuomas in more songs to describe the longing for the innocent, openminded boy (hands without a tool) he once was. That youth is gone, so that innocent boy in him is dead, only a lonely soul is left.
The ocean is a metaphor for the inexhaustible inspiration from which he can draw (in other songs the siren is the bringer of that inspiration to the poet Tuomas, the ocean soul).

All of these, except the last one, are with English translation of the for and after dialogue. This way you'ld be able to understand better why the singers chose the song they're about to sing. Just turn on CC's.

This performance was just sheer perfection. But bottom line, this is a Tuomas masterpiece whether sung by Floor or Tarja.

Sorry, but you're getting too distracted by something else. We can see that you're keeping an eye on some chat. This is not the way to do a credible reaction.

Probably lyrics. I think she is one of the most attentive reactors, and I really enjoy her reactions.

Probably the 1st time you've seen Lauren in a music reaction video? She's multitasking w/ lyrics and does an outstanding job at it. One of the best on YT imo. Cheers!

So, what you're saying is that you paid no attention to what she said at the start of the video in regards to reading lyrics as the video plays?
Then you have the gall to say that someone else isn't paying attention?
Sorry, but this is a YOU problem.

@@BrendonChase_2015 IMO, you can't do all at the same time and fully absorb the lyrics, the music and the performance.
I've not seem any vocal coach do it this way. My favorite is the charismatic voice.

🇬🇧 Norfolk strapped in ,have a look at their song Sahara live with Floor
for it’s Egyptian scale often overlooked by reactors 😊
