Let me know in the comments who YOUR favorite Metal Singers of ALL TIME are!
Top 20 METAL SINGERS OF ALL TIME
Next up in my Best Vocalists of All Time series, we have the Top 20 Metal, Male Vocalists of All Time.
This one was a little challenging to compile as I had to try and make the call of who belongs in which camp.
I tried to focus on including those that would still fall under the 80s and 90s metal category but there was still some crossover with those that were included on the Top 20 Rock Vocalists.
Again I compiled this list based on the polling we did with all of you, combined with my own input.
We'll be looking at clips of the artists performing and there will be honorable mentions included at the end.
I'd love for you all to continue to chime in and let me know if you thought I missed anyone!
Also here's the versions I and my students have done of songs from the artists mentioned in the video:

I've also included here some interesting facts about some of the artists from the top 20:
    Geoff Tate
A wine enthusiast, he started making wine at age 14, explaining: "I was a boy scout and you could get a merit badge if you created a beverage or a food product and I made dandelion wine, which wasn't very good but definitely sparked my interest and got me started on that passion."The passion for wine further developed when Tate was in Queensrÿche: "I have been collecting wine seriously since the band first got signed back in 1983 and we were touring the world. I'd make special arrangements to leave at certain points of the tour and take off and head into the wine regions. I started to become even more interested in how it was made and how grapes were grown and which grapes grew best where and that type of thing." Tate has given several interviews to the magazine Wine Spectator. In 2010, Geoff and Susan Tate launched their own brand of wine, "Insania".
    Jon Bon Jovi
When he was seventeen, Bon Jovi was sweeping floors at his cousin Tony Bongiovi's recording studio, Power Station. In 1980, when Meco was there recording Christmas in the Stars: The Star Wars Christmas Album, Tony Bongiovi recommended John for the song "R2-D2We Wish You A Merry Christmas", which became his first professional recording (credited as John Bon Jovi).

I love Pantera too, but he wasn’t that great live. Listen to their live performances after about 3-4 years after getting famous. He deteriorated quickly, and currently he’s pretty average as well. He does completely different music though and I’m not a fan so that doesn’t help

He was and is amazing live. Once the heroin was introduced to him, he started screaming and his death metal/black metal phase meshed so unbelievably well with Dimebags heavy guitar riffs and gut wrenching solos @Rawnchy

Come on Ken! Geoff Tate 19? Seriously?😄 it’s not fair. Singing wise,I think he beats almost all those others easily. His live performances are just as amazing as his studio ones. He is such a technical vocalist and doesn’t have to make a lot of effort to make those high notes. It’s totally in his comfort zone. Anyway, thanks a lot for your wonderful channel. I love it. You’re really cool.

Understatement of the year. He’s #1 for me not just for his range- there’s lots of guys that can hit high notes but Geoff’s emotion and tone give me goosebumps. It’s a vote though and most likely less people have heard of Queensryche than some of the others.

Warrel Dane of Sanctuary and Nevermore was also a phenomenal Vocalist I consider him to be the most underrated Heavy Metal singer of all time. He had a vocal range of 5 to 6 octaves. Check out songs soldier's of steel from Inception album by Sanctuary. Dreaming neon black title song from Nevermore. Also Lance King Vocalist is very underated for a Metal singer his cover of Queensryches eye's of a stranger is awesome video is on TH-cam.

Agreed, but I think Klaus should be in there instead of Halford---Halford maybe #6 IMO, and Bruce Dickenson #7. Also, @Ken Tamplin, I think you could have included some better song examples---for instance, for Geoff Tate, I think "Take Hold Of The Flame" would highlight his singing ability much better, and "Still Loving You" would have done it for Klaus. Miljenko Matijevic should definitely be in the top 5 though, but he may be more "glam" rock.

Thanks for the video. It took me down memory lane! I went to a lot of concerts on this list. The first being Gracie Slick. My mother took me when I was around 7-8. I took my son and his friend (they were 12 and 80s metal made a brief come back especially for young teens) to see Bon Jovi at the houston rodeo back in 03.
They became quite popular again. Jon had the same hair, the same shirt and looked nearly the same age he did when I saw them in concert in the 80s. My best friend worked for ATT&T and was so in love with him she looked up his private phone number and called. She was fired of course but she would do it all over again!

One bit of correction though, but the Scorpion's singer's name is Klause Meine and the 'e' at the end is not silent, it's pronounced as a short 'a' as is ah. I have heard you do this multiple times and whoever did your titles in the vid spelled it 'Mein', sorry, don't mean to be a nit picker, but the least we can do is get a person's name correct. Love the Video Ken, We could debate this list forever. You know how passionate Metalheads are about their music. My take is there are far too many Rock vocalists on the list who, IMO, never sang a metal song, were not in a metal band and most just wore the clothes lol. Good singers, yes. Anyway, I would've added Eric Adams, it's hard to get more Metal than Manowar and he is a killer vocalist who's live performances were always incredible. Jon Oliva of Savatage certainly added uniqueness with his screams on Sirens as well as controlled anger and emotion on so many other great songs. Udo and Accept, more uniqueness. Tony Martin, Sabbath's unheralded singer has some very good singing on actual Sabbath Albums. Ian Gillan should also be able to be in both genres. Bruce Dickson is definitely Metal. Honorables: Well if Dokken is on there, I need to see Dee Snider (talk about a frontman). Meniketti? Joey Belladona too. This is Metal after all \m/. Love it all Ken, thanks!!!

It's virtually impossible to make a list like that and make everyone happy. A very interesting take nonetheless, Ken! I'm not a singer nor a teacher so by no means do I have the expertise, but I'd like to throw some names into the mix as well: Jeff Scott Soto (probably the best singer that Yngwie has ever had both live and in studio), Mickey Thomas (maybe not a true metal vocalist, but what a voice), Devin Townsend (it just wouldn't be fair to leave him out), Chris Cornell (early Soundgarden was definitely more alt-metal than rock), Mike Patton (I mean, the dude can do EVERYTHING with his voice), Alan Averill and a great duo from Switzerland - Marc Storace and Steve Lee (maybe more hard rock than metal singers but they qualify in my ears).

A bit surprise of not seeing David De Feis (Virgin Steele), not even mentioned (at the beginning of his career he was close to be the No 1), Roberto Tiranti (Labyrinth), probably the No 1 in Italy, Tony Martin (Black Sabbath), at least before he lost his incredible powerful voice, very similar to Ray Gillen, Nils K. Rue (Pagan's Mind) [ok, it's not properly of metal band, but the voice is], Peter Steele (Type 0 Negative), probably also one of the best bass player, till he was alive. But I know that is impossible to make such a list, so great effort anyway

    10. Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia)
or even just newer frontmen with unique voices like Joakim Broden (sabaton) or Jari Mäenpää (Wintersun)
appreciating old bands is great but half of the list wouldn't be considered metal by most people and newer artists need recognition too

Problem is marketing, besides Patton, I have never heard of these singers or the bands.

tobias! it very dificult to make a list whit so many talented ones, i think that Pellek (a norwegian guy that its proud of him self for having a vocal range of 4 octaves) Leo Falaschi (ex angra and ava) who has in my opinion the most expresive vocals of metal, the spanish beast Leo Jiménez who sing mostly in spanish but he do some metal classic like Kneon Nights, and i can go on forever

@@detroitrockscity thats precisely it though. They're world class singers and deserve to get recognition for what they do. If a video is made specifically about lesser known singers, it wouldn't be a marketing issue, it would be Ken using his experience and knowledge to pick out promising singers or already inhumane singers so that they can work up the reputation over time. I love the singers from this video as much as the next guy, but the way this is made it seems like there wasn't a single good metal singer on the scene in the last 20 years, when in reality there's better technical singers than ever before. Take Daniel Heiman from that OG comment list. Dude has full-voice Eb6s at 50 years of age, even dimash's belting range stops at Bb5, daniel is an absolute technical monster but noone ever talks about him

Good Lord do I love metal. I grew up in the mid 80's and man was it such an epic time for rock. Metal, stadium rock, hair bands and later grunge. So many great singers and groups. Sebastian Bach is hands down my favorite metal vocalist of all time but honestly you can't go wrong with any of the guys mentioned. Great list Ken!

@K G Baz is my favorite also, and I believe he should've been higher on the list (at least above JBJ).

Blackie Lawless and Warrel Dane are such good vocalists. Blackie has one of the most unique voices, and he still sounds great today. The emotion he conveys is amazing, especially on The Crimson Idol. Warrel had such power behind his voice and no one could compare to him. Shame they weren’t included…

Agreed Warrel Dane was Phenomenal r.i.p he had a range of 5 to 6 octaves was a low baritone and was classically trained for 5 years his singing capabilities was incredible I like him in both Sanctuary/Nevermore and Solo.
