    The meaning of the three-finger salute is described in the books: "It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love."

    Love this! I wanted to explain Haymich. So when you win the games you have to become a mentor to the tributes from your district. He was the only person from District 12 before Peeta and Katniss to win the games. So he had to try and help dozens of kids from 12 only to watch them die. So his attitude in the beginning is pretty fair considering He doesn't want to get attached to anyone else who will probably die no matter what he does.

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's something we don't really see as much in the films, that really informs Katniss as a person. Katniss and her sister spent their entire childhoods on the brink of starvation - like, they almost died several times because they couldn't get food. That's part of the reason tributes from 12 don't win as often - they have so much trouble getting food that they're physically much weaker than the other tributes.
      We can't really see that in the films, because they can't legally have their actors be on the brink of starvation to SHOW that. They can have skinny actors - but MOST Hollywood actors are thin, so you don't really notice the difference. It leads to problems like where it's unbelievable that Clove, who's younger, could've overpowered Katniss - what you don't see in the film is that Katniss is supposed to basically be skin and bones. She's supposed to be on the very brink between life and death, to the point where she takes tesserae every single year because even with the hunting, she has no choice.

    In the books it explains that you can get extra food rations by putting your name in the drawing for the hunger games over and over. Gale for instance having a huge family, had to put his name in many many times. Katniss too. But interestingly, the two chosen had the lowest odds. Peter being a bakers son never needed extra food and Prim was only just now of age this reaping. Just food for thought really.

    • @sam_c95
      @sam_c95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      On top of that, your name is put in one extra time each year, so 18 year olds have a higher base chance of being chosen than 12 year olds (before considering the food entries). So Peeta's name was in five times for being 16, but it's still not a lot compared to those who claim extra food as well.

  • @sylviagreybe672
    @sylviagreybe672 3 ปีที่แล้ว +232

    So Gale is just a friend, but he really actually loves Katniss. Peeta has loved her since they were little kids.
    The gamemakers have had the whole past year to work on the arena and what would be in it. So they create things during the year that can then be dropped into the arena at any time (like the "dogs").
    Heymitch won the 50th hunger games when he was 16. There was something special about that year but I won't mention it till you've seen them all. So that little family didn't only lose Rue which was bad enough, they also lost their father/husband...

  • @DoranGale

    The three finger salute is something District 12 does at funerals, expressing gratitude and telling a loved one they’ll be missed. At the reaping, no one believed Katniss would win. They were thanking her for sacrificing herself to save her sister, saying they’d never forget her.
    Mockingjays are the result of a failed Capitol experiment. During the rebellion, they made genetically engineered birds called jabberjays, capable of memorizing and flawlessly repeating lengthy conversations. When the rebels started staging bogus meetings, feeding the jabberjays false information, the Capitol stopped using them. The jabberjays left in the wild bred with mockingbirds, giving birth to mockingjays. Mockingjays can’t speak, but they can perfectly mimic full songs, often following people with nice voices. Mockingjays became a symbol of rebellion, because they’re the result of a stupid mistake made by the Capitol. Katniss was literally wearing an anti-Capitol symbol in that arena.
    Victors aren’t just mentors, they’re Capitol property, the more attractive ones being pimped out to Capitol citizens. If they refuse to bend to the wishes of the Capitol, the Capitol kills their loved ones. District 1 and 2 “Careers” usually win because they’re specially trained for the Games, but that also means they’re groomed to please Capitol citizens. Glimmer is flirtatious, not because she’s interested in Cato, but because her strategy is to make herself desirable. Clove takes her time with Katniss because the Capitol audience loves the drama. Every death is tragic when you think of every angle. The helpless kids came from impoverished homes, their families overworked and starving, but the families of the well-trained “Careers” chose to subject their children to this, literally looking at their child and deciding to make them charming, attractive killers to please the Capitol.

    A little detail that I really like that wasn’t mentioned in the movies was the talk of the bread types of each district. When they were in the training center getting ready for the games, when it came time for lunch, Peeta and Katniss sat together, and at the tables was a bowl of staple breads for each district. Peeta, being the bakers son, explains to Katniss the importance of each and the unique way they were made to represent the districts, for example one from district 4 having a greenish tint with seaweed because of them being the fishing district. And the other one noted was the crescent roll dotted with seeds which was the one from District 11, them being the agricultural district. It leads on to later in Rue’s death, where district 11, Rue’s district, sends the bread. Instead if it being stamped with an 11 like it shows in the movie, in the book, Katniss recognizes it from when Peeta was explaining and showing the different breads of each district, which makes it a touching moment for Katniss because she thought about how much it would have been for them to make that bread, being made from grain rations, and to gift it to her, the amount it would have taken for 11 since they are such a poor district, and the thought of how they recognized that Katniss tried to save Rue and i just like how subtle the book version of that is.

    40:03: This is why Foxface was so clever. In the books, it's made clear that it is in fact common for tributes to steal the others' stuff, too. By just running away with her own bag, Foxface ensures that anyone who may be waiting in ambush chooses to let her go rather than risk another tribute stealing their package in their absence.

  • @greenmatius
    @greenmatius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    On the feast, you made an interesting point on grabbing the other district's bags. It did cross katniss' mind and very likely the other districts. Foxface's (the girl who ran across first) move actually has a lot of strategic consideration:
    1. Everyone is watching from the perimeter, not sure to come out first. Foxface took the inaction as an opportunity. She sprint, grabbed her bag and left
    2. Very likely she intentionally left the other bags there cos so long as the bags are still there, no one would go after her, since they "need" it
    3. This not only give her a free pass to escape, but was able to set it up in away that now everyone is even more on edge and would likely cause a fight and kill each other (which worked)

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This. Everyone's scared to actually go for their bags, because they KNOW there's a chance they're gonna get killed. The only thing stronger than that fear would likely be if someone actually tried to steal THEIR bag, and they realised their choices were to attack or lose it. Trying to steal the other bags might seem smart, but it's actually very likely to kill you.

    Some facts that the movie does not mention :
    - the names are put once in the reaping bowls for 12-years-old, twice for 13years-old, and so on.
    - eligible teenagers can ask for tesserae in their district, which is one year worth of supply of oil and grain. They can ask for a tesserae per family member in exchange for one additional paper with their name in the reaping bowl per tessera, and the amount stacks each year. At 16, Katniss has done that each year, which is why her names is put 20 times in the bowl. Gale's name is put 42 times at the age of 18 (for him twice each time, his mother and his three brothers and sisters - his father and Katniss's father died four years ago in the same mine accident).
    - District 12 is the poorest and least populated district, which is why, in 73 sessions of Hunger games, they won the Games only twice (if you don't count Katniss and Peeta's victory).
    - Haymitch, the second victor, won the 50th Hunger Games which was a special Quarter Quell edition, where twice as many Tributes were reaped. Haymitch won against 47 enemies... He's a drunk jerk but it's understandable : he is forced to mentor two teenagers each year to watch them die.
    - The youngest victor ever was 14. All 12 and 13-years-old are basically walking corpses, just like Prim would have been.
    - The marks are out of 12. An 11 is very rare, the 12 was never achieved.
    - The Careers made an alliance with the boy from District 3, the district of technology. He found a way to reactivate the mines around the starting spots (at the beginning of the games, they remain active one minute before the start so that you don't come off before the others and to evaluate your possibilities), which was never done before. And he placed them so that they would not explode all at once, but Katniss bypassed that, which signed the Careers' death. Their strategy is to keep all the supplies to themselves to have the other tributes starve or killed by them, but since they never learnt to fend for themselves, the years where the supplies were destroyed were the years they lost to another more humble district.
    - In the book, Rue's funeral by Katniss did get her a gift, but not from a sponsor : from district 11, a simple loaf of bread, but still : gifts are very expensive and districts can seldom afford them, but here they did and for a tribute that is not their own, which is unheard of in the history of the Games.

    Haymitch is such an interesting and tragic character. It makes sense that he drinks to self medicate. For one, the only reason he's alive is that he successfully killed a bunch of other kids in the same place as him. It's very likely that he has severe trauma haunting him from that alone. Also, he has been meeting new kids every year for most likely more than 20 years now, just to watch them be brutally murdered. It makes sense that he doesn't want to open up to the new kids.

There was a scene after the games where her stylists were talking about the games, like we would on a tv show. saying things like, when you dropped that hive I was getting my hair done etc. Similar to how we talk about plot twists in shows reality and fictional around the water cooler in our society. The entire empthy of the games is lost. Look at how the press has treated brittany spears (because its currently in the news).

      Reminds me of the current world, particularly in the U.S. The rich have less to worry about than the poor and middle classes. The country is full of rich, spoiled people who toy with peoples lives. They even had a "Donald" playing a president, and we also had a "Donald" playing a president. Interesting that a fantasy movie could have so much striking truth in a world they didn't know existed as it is at the time.

I love dystopian world especially because is a kind of books/movies where the characters, the psychological issues, the trope are usually stable but never fail in being immersive. Sadly one of the ingredients of a dystopian regime is the regime, the grey-ish world, the absence of colours and presence of social /poverty/ racial issues, so it fits perfectly under Trump reign with also the big propaganda (qanonist and shit).

At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me. But a shift has occurred since I stepped up to take Prim's place, and now it seems I have become someone precious. At first one, then another, then almost every member of the crowd touches the three middle fingers of their left hand to their lips and holds it out to me. It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love."

      It's ironic how in the books, the love triangle and focus on romance between Peeta and Katniss was emphasised by the (Capital controlled) media to be the most important part of the Games, to distract the Capital's citizens from the actual horror and uprising of the districts, to supress any form of hope of rebellion. So it’s in the distant future, a post apocalyptic world! After a huge chaos where all the districts caused an uproar and huge war, the way to control everyone was for the capital to force most of the districts into extreme poverty and punish them by making their kids fight it out every year. So that’s why no one has food and is living in ruins in the districts but the technology in the capital is super advanced. All the districts have a certain resource like mining or forestry and some of the districts like 1 and 2 are more rich due to having better resources therefore typically produce stronger kids that go on to win the games. If a kid wins then their district gets extra food and wealth for the year

      specifically post-apocalyptic North America (Panem being Pan-America including parts of Canada and Mexico) and the Capitol was moved to Wyoming due to massive flooding (Florida and most of California are underwater) and the Districts radiate out from there. District 1, the Luxury District, is located around the Northwest of the Capitol around parts of Utah, Idaho, and Montana. District 2, the Masonry District, is located in Colorado and New Mexico. And so on. District 12, the Mining District, is in the Ohio area. There's also a 13th District that's said to have been obliterated in the Dark Days of the first rebellion prior to the adoption of the Hunger Games.

The real romance is most apparent in the second half of catching fire.

    honestly, this is still one of the best book to film adaptations i have ever seen. i lost count of how many times i've watched all four films. i think what helps these films that isn't really incorporated in other book to film/show projects is the subtlety with the details. it's not in your face. it's not explained by a disembodied voice. you have to really look for the things they snuck in which is how visual art should be. we as the viewers aren't guided by the hand being told everything, we actually have to watch and rewatch, and then watch a few more times which i love! i started making two seconds gifs of the films and it made it a lot easier to spot all of the little things the crew got right. i am still annoyed by katniss' archery though. she's supposed to be a hunter. not an olympic archer. to see the bow technique she should have been using, there's a gorgeous scene devoted to long bow archery in king arthur: legend of the sword. i think there's still a clip up here on yt. it's the only film i can immediately think of that shows everything correctly. i'm convinced the director made the film just for that scene alone.
