One of the things I love most about this game is how faithful it is to the movie, the sets like the bunker, facility and cradle look identical in layout to the movie and grant Kirkhope absolutely nailed the soundtrack.

I was 23 or 24 when I first played this and I loved it just as much as any kid who got to play the game for the first time in the late '90s. Some of my fondest gaming memories are of playing one-on-one against a friend and spending hours hunting one another through the different levels of the game. In the years since we've gotten the Halo franchise, the Call of Duty games and countless other FPS console and PC games but to me this was the one that launched it all. The greatest video game of its era.
Bravo for this video, Calvin! You made this 46-year-old feel 24 again.

My favorite game of all time and my game for life. Also the game that I grew up with. The good old days of gaming. No online play, no DLC just ready to play games out of the box. Back when you had to invite your friends over. Back when games had less or no dialogue. Those were the days.

20 year old here, and this game very much does hold up, first played when I was around 17 or 18 and I enjoyed the level design and gameplay, but the thing that really stood out was like you said, the N64 trigger. Every time you fire a weapon, you feel like Bond. I found myself making a Brosnan esque face whenever I fired a load of bullets into an enemy.

Great review Calvin! I picked this game up when I was 17 (five years ago); I played the Wii remake when I was a teen and was curious to play the original. When I first bought it, I played through dam but couldn't get past Facility. The next few years, I solely played the multiplayer and always had a blast with my friends. I returned to play the single player this year and finally beat the main game (excluding Aztec and Egyptian). My thoughts on the game are that it's super fun, but some parts are cryptic and unclear on how to proceed. Overall, I really like this game, and the multiplayer is simple enough to be a fun time for anyone.

GoldenEye 64 holds so many memories for me...it and Shadows of the Empire were the first two N64 games my brother and I ever owned, part of one of the greatest Christmas gifts my parents gave us (they guilted us so hard about the effort they went through to score the N64 and the games for Christmas 1997 :D)!
This game was one of my prized possessions and it took me like 8 months to just beat it on Agent difficulty, with levels like the train, Jungle and Cradle triggering near-apoplectic rage fits over how often I got fragged trying to beat them...took less time to whip through the game on harder levels, once certain tricks were learned.

    • @Rocket1377

@@Rocket1377 You're totally right. My experience however, was that I couldn't beat the level until I read about this in n64 Power magazine. I had no idea that firing a few shots wouldn't trigger the usual onslaught. Maybe I'm a dummy but how could I have figured that out by myself when I was 12?

    • @Sparrows1121
      @Sparrows1121 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Rocket1377 Its a broken stealth mission. But basically you just need to either slap or throw knives, and when it gets tough then just blast everything, while also shooting security cameras.
I consider "Archives" to be the best level including the Dam obviously. But its due to how much of FPS genre it embraces in that level, you can hide and shoot often behind things. Aka the perfect level!

Great video, fantastic trip down memory lane. I think you're right Calvin, the Bond franchise was very lucky to be associated with this game. I have quite a nostalgic view of it. I met my wife in 1999 and she shared a house with a girl who's boyfriend had an N64. We got talking about Bond and then he mentioned Goldeneye on the N64. I was hooked. I married my wife the following June. Maybe Goldeneye on the N64 had something to do with it! ;-) I did soon after buy my own N64 and Goldeneye. It's in the garage boxed up and the moment.

I actually got into the original game like 2 weeks ago. I bought an N64 just so I could play this game! Back in 2015, I was getting into gaming for the first time, and I heard everyone talking about how Goldeneye on the N64 is the greatest game of all time. I heard so much about it, I decided to watch the movie, and that got me into James Bond as a franchise. I played the DS game to death, and I finally got the N64 game and even though I haven’t gotten far, it’s easily a great game. It took me a sec to get the controls down, but when I did I was running around pumping guards full of led.

First time I experienced this game was watching my dad play the game on his N64 when I was kid, which funnily enough I was born in the same year: 1997. The game was my entry to the James Bond franchise with the movie being the first one I watched as a teen, there's so much nostalgia fused with this game for me it's insane.
Only playing Dam because I could run straight to the end on Agent, start up Frigate, get on the boat and then get back onto the speedboat to end (fail) the mission early. Eventually learned how to properly play the game and actually complete a playthrough of the story.
Tons of matches against my dad including a Slappers Only match that took forever, and a match with Remote Mines where the game glitched so they were stuck floating in the air.
Since I still have an N64 I've continued to revisit the game on official hardward but I also regularly play on PC with a special emulator that allows Mouse & Keyboard controls. There's GoldenEye: Source which I discovered on TH-cam after being disappointed with the Wii Remake, and then of course there's the modding community. Custom Levels, Custom Weapons, Custom Campaigns, and Custom Characters...which lead to me making Mario Characters with help from some of the big mod creators.
It's a real shame that this game never got its official, faithful remake and it's a shame that GoldenEye 25 got a C&D, but with Spies Don't Die keeping the core gameplay, and Project 007 being announced I think we're finally going to get some new, good Bond games again.

Been waiting for this video for awhile!
I think the enjoyment that comes out of this is a combination of both nostalgia AND Goldeneye being a genuinely good game that still holds up very well...maybe clunky controls aside. But Goldeneye is also a marvel for just how well programmed it is. Look at how many retro games speedrunners have SHATTERED with bugs and glitches (I'm looking at you Ocarina of Time) and yet nothing TRULY game-breaking has ever been discovered in Goldeneye; it's just so well built and it's astonishing when most of the Rare team at that time had little to no experience working on video games.
Nice review Calvin! And, I don't know if you've actually played it, but if you fancy pulling your hair out in frustration, I'd love to see a review of the "spiritual successor" Perfect Dark one day. MUCH more difficult than GE!

As someone who was introduced to the game 20+ years after it was released, it still holds up fascinatingly well. As much as the technical and graphical limitations of the time hold it back when compared to modern shooters, it’s still stunningly well-designed. The multiplayer, in particular, is untouchable even when directly compared to newer games.

I started playing this game in 2005 when I was 5 and I haven’t stopped ever since to this day in 2020. My generation missed out on n64 with mostly playing PS2 and the first Xbox however I only had an n64 from my brother growing up and also being a bond fan so I was lucky to experience this when none of my friends ever did. For me it holds up purely based on the freedom to change up gameplay however you want, all the Easter eggs there are, the attention to detail with level design and cheats ultimately making each level play through so customizable. There are some things I newly discover 15 years later playing this game that take me back to the wonder of playing it as a kid. And as a huge bond fan myself, the Goldeneye movie with game combo is just the ultimate complementary pairing, I’ll never get tired of these two fantastic pieces of entertainment and art. Truly spectacular and important to my life!

N64 Goldeneye came at a perfect point in my life. I was starting High School, and had been a Bond fan since I was 007 years old when I saw my first Bond film... A View To A Kill!
This game was a huge bonding tool for my friends and I, because I had a considerable Bond history knowledge back then, so I could explain to them all about Jaws, Oddjob, Aztec level, etc. It allowed me to introduce my friends to many classic Bond films that they had refused to check out up until then.
The game is without a doubt, one of the most influential video games of all time. I definitely credit Goldeneye N64 for introducing the character into many new generations and making him relevant at a time Bond desperately needed it.

I remember around the year 2000 when I was 4 watching my brother and my cousins playing GoldenEye multiplayer and I played a little bit of it but not much. 12 years later I got the game for myself to finally see if it was as good as everyone said and... I was addicted. The controls took a bit of getting used to but once I got used to it I couldn’t put it down. So much replay value and I make it a point to play through it at least once or twice a year. Absolutely one of my favorite games ever

I absolutely love this game, this was my introduction to 007. THIS the thing that got me into being a bond fan. So this game is my favorite for multiple reasons.
The Egyptian level is pretty good, and there are multiple ways to play that level, and once you knock out semidu twice the level goes all dark and gets all confusing if you don’t know what you are doings, you could also kill semedi 1st and than collect the golden gun.
What you could do if find the button codes the ones you enter once the level starts and you could use it to help you beat the remaining levels on 00 agent-to unlock the final level and once you complete all levels on 00 agents you unlock an editor difficulty where you can choose how accurate deadly and quick the enemies are.

I got Goldeneye with my N64 on Xmas day 1998. My brother and I as well as my older cousin spent that whole time playing the multiplayer as well as the single player.
After that, anytime we had friends over, there were always goldeneye battles and so many hours were spent battling each other, with all sortsnof game modes.
I really have fond memories of that game. I miss those carefree times

Nothing more classic then this game, as one of my earliest N64 games back in 1997. So many great memories of this, though the multiplayer was the highlight for me. I loved the single player, but it was always the explosive multiplayer games me and my older sister used to play with her friends. It usually ended with me getting ganged up on by them, so it ended with me getting annoyed and using Oddjob just to get some revenge. Well unless we played Golden Gun mode, I could play as anyone and kill anyone with that gun. My sis used to hate me so much for that, she couldn't aim for crap with it, but I was always able to get her and her friends in one shot. So satisfying, oh and the proximity mines. I was the little bugger who would lay them on the ground all over the place, and when I noticed one of them entered an area with it. BOOM! Ah so many memories.
Though I will say, I was surprised you didn't mention the CCTV tape in the second bunker level. If you look at it in your inventory on your watch, you will notice the tape is actually an old VHS tape of Goldeneye itself. I can't deny I love that little easter egg.

I was really hoping that now that Nintendo and Microsoft seem to be all buddy buddy lately (Microsoft released the Xbox exclusives Cuphead and Ori on Switch, and allowed both Banjo-Kazooie and Minecraft Steve to be characters in Smash) things could finally turn in this whole saga. How cool would it be to get a simultaneous release of the cancelled 360 upresed port to both Xbox and Switch simultaneously with cross-platform online multiplayer? Like you said it would print money. You have to wonder if it's simply the Bond rights that are keeping that from happening at this point.

Supposedly, Microsoft still plans to actually release the GoldenEye XBLA port at some point, as some developers were caught unlocking achievements for it not too long ago. Sadly, the war in Ukraine has basically indefinitely delayed that project, much like what happened to the Advanced Wars remake.

Your reviews are well done! You're very knowledgeable about the movies, and I actually like that you're not a real "hardcore" gamer.
Not sure how much you're into sci-fi, but one of my favorite games of all time was the spiritual successor to this game, perfect dark. Made by the same team, it was basically their dream game and was extremely ambitious for it's time. Has an excellent soundtrack. Just bringing it up in case you see around somewhere, you should pick it up! Many references to GoldenEye in it.

I've only ever played GoldenEye N64 once in my entire life. When I was younger, my sister was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation and she spent a week in hospital recuperating and in the children's ward was a play area filled with toys, books, videos and a load of old video game consoles and I pretty much spent my time playing these games and GoldenEye was one of them.

Im 21 years old and i grew up on gamecube so it was "agent under fire" that was the nostalgic bond for me. However, i would visit my grandparents every other weekend and the games on N64 were Crusin World, Mario N64 and this game. It still holds heavy in my heart of nostalgia even though it was before i was born. The train mission was my favorite but i could never get past the jungle mission because i wasnt good enough haha. Either way, still smell the scent of their guest bedroom

Saying Silo is one of your favorite levels says a lot about your personality. Nothing wrong with that, I enjoy Silo too, it's just rare to hear somebody say that. My generation has a good deal to say about this game with favorite levels at the top of the list, but Silo is normally listed at the bottom of the list of levels. It's nice to hear Silo get some love.

There is a special emulator called 1964 for GoldenEye 64 and Perfect Dark on PC that allows you to play them with mouse and keyboard in widescreen 4k and with 60fps, you can even play the Goldfinger mod on it (yes there is a mod for GoldenEye 64 that turns the game into Goldfinger).

    Fun fact about archives level:
You can plant a timed mine on the wall opposite of the window (after breaking it)
This will trigger an explosion during the cutscene.
And sometimes, if mine is placed back in the alley enough, Natalya even survives.
If not, the mission fails during the cutscene
If I remember correctly, you could also instant blow up remote mines with pressing A and B simultanously

I remember in 1999 I was 5 years old and a neighbor had the N64 and a bj ch of games he let me borrow for a few weeks. Goldeneye was one of the games and me and my mom would always play multiplayer... she always knew where the golden gun was -.-" years later I had some money saved up and wanted to buy my own N64 and the person sadly didn't have Goldeneye so I almost said no but I still ended up buying the system. Months later during Christmas I got a small gift, opened it and there it was, Goldeneye. Me and my mom relived our memories of multiplayer and I actually tried to play the story mode in which I sucked haha. When the remake for the Wii came out I beat the game in 1 day, 1 sitting. Never got to beat the original though. Great review, lots of nostalgia and i agree it needs some kind of remaster or a re-release on the Switch or something with online multiplayer and local. I'll be happy to spent money again on this piece of history.
