i met her once at a hotel in honolulu. i thought she was a lost tourist so i asked if she needed help. her entourage was handling the checkout and such but when they saw me talking to her they ran over to check. she was quite a delightful person and until her folks showed up i didnt know who she was.

Meh. I think it’s dumb that women aren’t allowed to become monarchs. When there aren’t any male aristocrats left, the women are forced to abdicate their royal status and give up their wealth. That’s bullshit since the men don’t have to give that up and can marry below their status. It’s fucking sexist. And the reason why women aren’t permitted to ascend to empress status is because past prime ministers have all felt that women are incapable of ‘ruling’. These women aren’t raised with any basic skill sets like cooking, laundry, driving, earning money, etc which puts them at a HUGE disadvantage. They’re not prepared for the world they’re going into. Idk, maybe as a Japanese American I have a biased westernized view, but the double standards are still there and they’re unfair towards women.

The whole family came to Japan and found everyone so helpful and polite. If Japan can show others how to treat people they will show her how much they care and help her with everything she needs to know. May they both be blessed for long life and happiness. What rubbish. We women have never had it so good. A lot better than what a lot of men are having it. They are so undervalued today. They daren't look at a pretty woman without being accused of sexism. And often women dress so provocatively it's crazy to not think that men are going to get mixed signals. Men ARE wired up differently to us women, so can you imagine how hard women are making it for men to be around half naked women and not put a foot out of line? And If they don't look they're wet, or gay. On TV they're often portrayed as weak and stupid. Or abusers. And now women not only expect their husbands to work full time jobs ( which generally they have always done, no taking 9 months off to enjoy their new baby) but they want them to be interested in wallpaper, curtain fabric, dress shopping. Shoe shopping! To be able to clean the house, look after not only their kid's but the neighbors kids and the wife's sisters kids as well. That's the ones that, CAN SEE their kids, because somehow, the mum's get more rights over the children in a divorce than the dad's! I've witnessed firsthand how nasty women can behave when it comes to using the children as weapons. They need to stop it, it's disgusting and evil. Now, I'm not saying that women weren't once the downtrodden and the undervalued ones, and the sometimes abused ones, but in many cultures today, the pendulum has definitely swung the other way. The pendulum should never be swinging from one side to the other, it should be fair to both sides, which I have to say is definitely not happening in a lot of places in the world today. So I do wish women would STOP their moaning and whining!
Obviously, I'm not talking about women who are in abusive relationships . They need to ring the helpline numbers. Equally, so do men need to ring the helplines if they are in an abusive relationship.

There is no way she has suffered financially, the palace would never allow that as it would make for a scandal and that is not something they would ever, ever permit. For other parts about living as a bird in a cage that is true. The Japanese Royal family does not have many freedoms they are very much ruled and not the rulers like other Royal families around the world it is a whole different culture for sure.

ex-Princess Nori (Sayako) married a civil servant, Mr. Kuroda. There were no financial worries for her, no worries about her future, no problems with her husband's or his mother's past or personality.
There are still no bad rumors about Mr. and Mrs. Kuroda, but Mr. and Mrs. Komuro and Kei's mother are still surrounded by criminal suspicions.

There is nothing more important than being free. Happiness is equal to freedom. Without freedom, life is like a life of a slave or of a prisoner no matter how much fame, money or title one may have. You control your life because you live it. The princess made the right choice to experience life to her fullest.

Don't romantizice the story: the US imposed a constitution and reforms in the imperial household in Japan after the war, not only limiting the members of such family but also that females had to leave, relinquish titles and everything and their descendants have no succession rights, that's why the current heirs is limited to the emperor's 86yrold uncle, his brother and his 15yrs old nephew

This is true, but the Japanese are also at fault, they CAN rewrite laws, include women in the line of succession, but they have this issue that women would make the "bad decision" of marrying foreigners and make the Imperial line "impure."

One of my ancestors was an English noble whose house was started by the illegitimate son of a King. This noble was visiting the United States in the early 1800s on business and fell in love with a Native American woman. His family didn't approve and thought disinheriting him would make him change his mind, but he married her anyway. Since the family had no other sons all the lands went to the husbands of their daughters such that today the noble house no longer lived exists.
Meanwhile the now disinherited noble became a self made millionaire proving that he didn't need the family title. Which, in 1800's money, would be around 40 times what a millionaire today is worth.
His family didn't learn their lesson though. His son inherited his wealth and he had no children so his siblings, including my ancestor, were waiting for him to die for his wealth. He decided to give it all to his maid rather and only gave $100 to each relative, which was equivalent to around $4000 today, so they couldn't contest it. She then went on to invest it and her family still has that wealth to this day while my family remains greedy. So much so that some cousins of mine literally fued over a toy gun like that one Beverley hill billies. It's so bad that when someone offered to pay both sides for it neither wanted it because neither wanted the other party to have anything.
Anyway, the moral of this story is fairly simple. Live for love not for greed. Greedy families that take away titles from those who marry for love only hurt themselves in the long run. I imagine that, for example, the Japanese royal family would benefit from not losing itself to disinheritance.
