  • A Perfect Storm of war, climate change and disease is fueling inflation. In the US and UK, more are turning to food banks to seek help. In Southeast Asia, students drop out of schools, as families struggle to make ends meet.
    On top of that, companies worry of geopolitical risk, a Taiwan contingency and what that may do to supply chains that are already stressed.
    In this documentary, eminent global thinkers weigh in on these shocks to the global system, and discuss possible ways forward.

    Thank you for inviting SM Tharman to speak on the topic of this documentary. His insightful views truly open my understanding of the many challenges we as a world are dealing with and agree with him on multilateral cooperation between countries being a better solution to lift people from decades after decades of the same problems.

    Inflation within the countries of the United States and Canada is forcing many to rely of food banks. Mainly, this is due to over 70% of the paycheque having to go into paying the monthly rent, not much is left over for the basic essentials. Having to cut out some grocery items because of the price, eliminating the luxury items like cable television, internet connection, vehicles due to expensive gasoline and diesel fuels.

      The problem in America is rooted in a nearsighted policy by allowing investors from foreigners to buy real estate in the country and own many rental properties to satisfy the shareholders. That is a runaway train and caused homelessness for Americans. The policy was implemented in 1980 and the real effect is felt heavily now.

    As an OFW (overseas Filipino worker), this documentary makes my heart tight because I resonate with my fellowmen struggling during this time having lived that way when I was growing up. We are better off now and Im truly grateful. I can only imagine how difficult life can be when you're poor in the Philippines especially in metro Manila during a pandemic. To the younger Filipinos out there, work your hardest so you will be able to live a better kind of life socioeconomically. It will be hard but do it for your future selves. I've lived in Canada and now New Zealand. Western countries are really expensive to live in and most people really weigh the decision of whether to have babies or not depending on finances. I find this documentary frustrating. What is the mentality of the working poor filipinos? I understand it's a Catholic country however, is birth control discussed when you're growing up there? I don't understand why they have so many kids if they can barely feed themselves. Is there a resistance to using birth control? Just trying to understand.....

    • @aliikane
      @aliikane 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You got that incorrect. Democrat green policies forced oil companies to downsize refineries and now prices are high because of the lack of ability to refine. Supply and demand. Remember Biden professed that “we are going to get rid of fossil fuels”. Once you close refineries you can't just fire them back on. It takes decades for refineries to get their money back, so oil companies don't want to invest billions into firing up old refineries (many are unable to get them back to working) or build new one refineries because of the leftist green policies that want to get rid of fossil fuels. The high gas prices are 100% because of the Democrat green policies. When Trump was in office, the US was oil independent and exporting oil. Now Biden has the US importing oil from OPEC and other countries.

      Rising energy prices affect everyone because trade requires energy and expensive energy means these price increases move on to the consumer. I'm proud of you for living in a dense area and everything but Canada is not immune to being screwed over by inflation and expensive energy. Beyond that, not all of Canadians live in areas that don't require cars.
      In the US, average cars are not remotely as expensive as houses or housing rent (including dense urban housing), and prices at the pump itself have largely fallen since the highs early this year. Our concern, like most of the world, is inflation in everyday commodities.

The government has been providing alot of services helping them. The 'Ayuda' or assistance from the government in terms of money, food, medicines, school supplies, scholorship grants, etc. are available to those less priviledge. When the gasoline price went up taxi and jeepney drivers received monetary assistance. For the students on school opening they received school supplies and money. Students are also entitle to free bus rides or less 20% in their jeepney fare. Senior Citizens has given priviledges of less 20% in purchase of medication and also on food/groceries. There still alot of benefits to mention for Filipino people living in this beautiful country.

    The response to the COVID pandemic was a global failure. The global shutdown was an overreaction to a very mild virus yet the supply change disruptions, changes in production capacity with high government spendng (to support lockdowns) have caused massive inflation. In the years to come, more people will lose their livelihood, quality of life and opportunity to prosper; this will be a more significant global impact than COVID.

      On the contrary, Covid pandemic was under reacted and failure of many countries to lockdown for 1 to 2 months from it onset of spreading. Based on sciene, this Covid pandemic would be eliminated after 1 to 2 months. Just like the daying goes " No pain, No gain!". Sadly, many countries / people rather focused on economy or / and personal rights/ gains. Hence, the Covid viruses are given the great chances to mutate and spread like wild fire till todate. It is not a mild disease, I am still wearing PPEs everyday to care for Covid infected patients and preventing myself becoming a carrier for the good of myself and others.

    Don't worry. Increasing the interest rates by the Central Banks will remove any discretionary spending the middle class and poor have. This will slow inflation. Also, it has the added benefit of creating windfall profits on existing variable rate loans such as credit cards.

    13,30 in a way they eat both healthy and climate smarter as well as not supporting big business; eating plant based and from local suppliers in the market, avoiding "soda" or pop is good both for health (diabetes, obesity, poor dental health) and packed juices is waiting lots of packaging and not as good as eating the whole fruit incl fiber. So in that particular example, discounting the high cost of basic necessities like the supplies to cook the food etc...this is both better for the climate and the health of this family. If they eat a varied plant based diet incl legumes etc they will be well nourished at a lower price and save a lot of packaging and save resource waste (from meat production)...like saving on water and preventing more habitat destruction. I've not been eating anything from animals for over 40 years nor do I drink packaged justice, definitely no "soda" or canned beverages, also avoid packaging as much as possible, bring my own reusable containers to the fruteria where I find local, seasonal veg/fruit, almonds, spice, letils/beans etc and avoid supermarkets...I've never had a car, always cycle or walk, take public transport, use water/electricity minimally....and prefer repairing (especially thech), also avoid fast fashion and mostly buy 2nd hand. I'm not saying it's good that poor people have less but as a planet we are (well especially the super rich 😡) living way beyond the capability of the planet already. I know the economic issues are taking centre stage now, eith the inflation...rising rates, many poor in debt suffer, but we cannot forget we are in the middle of an urgent climate crisis. That is more urgent than the issues within our global fiat currency system. We cannot lose sight of the fact we only have 1 planet.
