The modulation is right at 100% with AL at 50 on my Bill FCC. No modifications. Confirmed with my technician's oscilloscope.

How to get to the hidden service menu
The Bill EU model you can get approx 20 watts with mod on AM & FM. Also upper & lower channels unlike the Bill FCC. I recommend the EU model. I hope they make one with Side Band this small. Fits perfectly in my 18 Cruze & Malibu although picks up noise & been wired direct to battery.
On my bill FCC USA the PL and AL are down is up 50 is full modulation 145 is 4.5 Watts. Unmodified radio. 7 3
Yes set to 50 for maximum modulation on Am if in europe the deviation can be increased to maximum value which is 500 in the service menu

And in terms of mods, I'd be much more interested in receiver mods and expanded audio bandwidth (frequency response)
I had a Bill. Loved the compact nature of it. It had good audio and tons of features. But it ran super hot, and one week in, it would only transmit about 1 watt, so I returned it. Anyone else have this issue?
Not with the Uniden 505xl, but the buttons have great wasted roger beep tones, and wish it could channel scan and had wx recieve. It is absolutely more rugged and reliable than the tiny similar Cobra radio though. I figure if they won't put it on the shelf at the truck stop, it is gonna be tech bait.

This video is very poor. It tells you very little. To get to the service menu, turn the radio on while pressing the ptt button on the microphone and Emg button and Am/fm button( wx in usa). You can then perform the functions shown in this video. If you want more channels and more power there is a very simple modification whereby you simply cut a white looped wire in the radio and move a jumper. You then have 940 channels and upto 7 watts power all adjustable via the service menu. This radio will do 20 watts if you solder another link next to the white wire in the holes provided but i didnt want to do this as i only need 4 watts to drive my linear amplifier plus squeezing 20 watts out is likely to cause it to run hot and reduce life span of final transistor. Check the blog of SimonTheWizard for pics of the inside to show you what to do. In europe you will want to increase Fm deviation to maximum value of 500 in the service menu to give you the full legal 2.2khz deviation

Europe FM modulacion for max modulation is 500 PL and AL .??? dhx
FM Deviation Bill I max. 320 possible, Bill II max. 500 steps in service menue
PL = AM/FM RF-Power low on 4 Watt Mode (CEPT/FCC rules), adj. to 3,8W +/- 0,1W > service / factory settings
AL = AM Mod limiter (low power 4 Watt mode), service manual says: adj. amplitude to 85% mod depth (@ 30mV/1,25 Khz mic level)
higher value =lower % AM mod depth
@@KlausR hi, can you help me get the optimum values for PL/AL/FM? If I understood correctly PL goes to max, AL should stay around 60 and FM? Should it go up to 500? Thank you!

The values are variable to compensate for manufacturing tolerances and component tolerances
The adjustment is based on the manufacturer's specifications at a professional measuring bench
These are prescribed in the technical service manual in order to
standards according to ETSI (Europe) or FCC (USA)
The FM Dev values setting depends on whether
it is Bill I or Bill II.
Bill I and Bill II have different firmware with different setting range
@@KlausR I think mine is Bill II (EU Version) since FM goes up to 500. I understood that Bill I goes up to 320 only.
@@RazvanChirita it doesn't matter if the setting range goes up to max 320 or 500 (depending on the processor firmware)
At maximum setting 320 or 500 the FM modulation still remains very quiet and weak.
You can only get it properly with hardware modification.
