    I have been struggling for hours trying to use a zig-zag line (like a dovetail) to split an object into smaller pieces to fit my 3D printer. I knew I had seen you do it, but couldn't find the video until just now. I had been watching a video by another person, who was using an older version of Fusion 360 and his method didn't work for me. Only after re-watching your video where you said you have to change to Patch view as it won't work in Model view, and only after I googled how to do that in the new version, did I remember that you mentioned once that there are two "Extrude" commands. Locating the second one under the new "Surface" menu fixed the problem. I had drawn the zig zag line, but could not extrude it! Many thanks

  • @DaCooyon
    @DaCooyon 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I tried to use this to help me as it has the splitting the file using a body to make a registration cut.
    While this video helped me a lot, it falls short as changes to Fusion seem to have taken the process in a different direction than the tutorial. It’s been four years so no big surprise. It would be nice to have you update this video to the current fusion. It sure would be helpful as this video was probably perfect for when you published it.

    Hey! I"m new to 3d printing and fusion 360. I was following along with the sword dove tailing and there are a lot of tool locations that have changed. Also, for some reason I can't get my dovetail extrusion to be used as a means to split the body like you did. I'm so lost

  • @HomesteadAce
    @HomesteadAce 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for the video Kevin! I have a question regarding the split body result. So we end up with two new bodies as expected but also the original body which is the remainder of the split? I'm used to getting two new bodies without that residue body. I take it thats the 0.2mm remainder of the original body?
    Is that right? And can that residual body be deleted safely?

    • @HomesteadAce
      @HomesteadAce 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And a follow up question, I noticed you did the sketch on the top level and not the sword component. Is this intentional to separate responsibility so to speak? And also to avoid the extra bodies and sketches from cluttering the component itself?

    Thank you for the video. This is by far the best video I have found on this technique. The dovetail joints are so perfect even when printing my part at .3 mm and doing a thickness of .2 mm for the joint. It snaps together so well it is actually satisfying to have happen and hear. For my model I had to split a large ring into 3 different pieces to be able to print it. I used dovetails that were a little different looking on each part so I knew which would snap into which.

    Great video Kevin, this will help me a lot to split some models. I'm pretty new to Fusion360. When I've tried to save the splits into STL files, the model sizes increased by an unknown percent. How could the files be saved to retain their sizes? Thanks and keep up the great tutorials.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Marcos. STL files contain no scale information, and the units are arbitrary. I'm assuming they're appearing to be scaled wrong while you import them into a slicing software? If so, try changing the units in the slicing software...it's likely that the file is in a different unit of measurement.

Just wanted to know whether you could make a video on converting mesh files to solid body so that parts can be modified. I'm trying to make a Lithophane holder but i need to convert the file to a solid body. I tried to remesh it but a lot of the details are missing. I'm trying to join the body in such a way that i could print the file in one go.

      With that said, depending on how many mesh triangles your file has, you may have to alter it in Autodesk Meshmixer. The video I linked to will discuss that a bit more though.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, IceCreams62. I had decided to wait until it was officially rolled out since a lot of users are still on the old one (maybe not now that they're pushing it a lot)...and ultimately because (although its probably more stable now) the UI preview was changing quite a bit and was pretty buggy for a while. My goal was to avoid having tutorial lessons with more than 3 or 4 different UI preview versions since they had been moving stuff around and renaming it quite a bit in the last 4 months.
      With that said, it appears they are planning on releasing it soon. I heard August... so we will see... hopefully it will be out soon :)

    Superb dovetail approach - as I sit here figuring out how to pin and glue my two pieces with a smooth interface together.
    Note -
    You have to have the Patch or Surface Sketch go outside the extents of the body, as shown in the video.
    Mine didn't work when I tried to be efficient and just go from one vertex to the opposite side vertex.
    I had to go back and add tag lines that clearly went beyond the main body extent.
    Now to print and see how it comes out.

    I really enjoy your videos and look forward to each one but I don't see one for the problem I currently have. I created an STL file that is only three words stacked on top of each other. It prints great. But I want to be able to print only the first and third word connected with a space for the second word to be printed with a different filament. Then I would be able to "snap" the two prints together and have one print in two colors. Can you point me toward one of your videos that show having the detailed control over splitting the file? Similar to what was done here: th-cam.com/video/0mwqbWdNpVI/w-d-xo.html but with more detailed control.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Donna. I don't have a video covering this topic in terms of "snapping" ability. It's something that's on my list of potential video topics to make. I would suggest for your particular problem that you create some surfaces with the "surface" or "patch" tools and then use the "Split Body" command (in a similar manner to what I do at the end of this specific tutorial). Make your surfaces different patterns or shapes that could snap into one another and be sure to add a thickness that equates to your required tolerance for 3D-printing. You'll probably need a .05-.2mm tolerance depending on how fine-tuned your printer is.
      Hopefully this helps a bit... I'll try to make this a video topic at some point. Cheers, Kevin :)

    Can you use one stl (mesh) to split another when working with 2 imported stl's?

      Hi, Anthony. I don't believe that is possible with a second STL file. Are you trying to subtract the one STL from the other? Cheers, Kevin :)

    I sure can't get the lines to go in the right direction, you have it leaning left with the 98 degree curve going right, but mine will not do this.

      You also need to have your Design History turned off: bit.ly/designHistory

    I never subscribe to fusion tutorial channels but your explanation as well as describing the keys you are pressing makes this an actually useful tutorial. Thanks!

    Having issues, can't see mesh menu? Enabled in preferences and restarted, went to object and turned off capture design, but still menu doesn't appear. I'm using the latest free (not for commercial use version) any ideas?

      Hi Tammy. Any way you can share a screenshot in my (free) community space? bit.ly/PDOcommunity
      It sounds like you're doing everything correct. Typically, the 'do not capture design history' is what gets people.

    I am using an version that was updated today. I set the preview setting mesh to on and restarted. Selected Do not remember my steps but i still do not get the mesh option. Is there a special way to load and STL? I grabbed a different one to split.

      Hi Clayton. The Mesh environment has been moved to one of the contextual tabs. Select the DESIGN workspace and then you'll see the "Mesh" tab in the toolbar.
      To insert a mesh you can go to the insert dropdown > Insert Mesh

    Hi, kevin . please can you make another video to show us how can we import a personal face photo and then convert it to 3D model ready for printing ??

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Mohammed. If you're wanting a 2 face shape, then you can follow my cookie cutter tutorial - th-cam.com/video/a3uNJoa_-io/w-d-xo.html
      If you're looking to turn a photo into a 3D model like the Einstein's head in this video... then you'll need to use an app for "Photogrammetry". In other words, you'll need a 3D scanner. You cannot do that directly in Fusion 360.

    I really like that thicken technique! That saves me time over push/pullling the surfaces afterward to add clearance! What's a good amount of clearance for a dovetail joint that will not be permanently glued together? Still .2mm? For example, I want to accurately locate two pieces that will be assembled/disassembled repeatedly. Or is there a better technique?
    Thanks for your time! I really value your insight and expertise!

    • @hillfortherstudios2757
      @hillfortherstudios2757 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update! (as if anybody cares) I had to make it closer to .4mm clearance because the surfaces I was making were not completely parallel to a printed plane. I also had to chamfer the corners after thickening because the corners had mild elephant's footing upon printing.

    When I use the Plane Cut tool, it doesn't close the ne mesh body(s), no matter what option I chose on 'Fill Type'. What am I doing wrong?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will depend on the object. Sometimes Fusion 360 won't be able to auto-fill it if there are too many meshes. You can try to use the "Patch" command in the Surface tab.
