In the early 1950s, I sat cross-legged on the musty-smelling basement floor of our town library and poured through Frank L. Baum's OZ stories. I read every one of them. In 1972, I began my 35-year stint as a one-man band and used "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to settle rowdy crowds and pack the dance floor with would-be lovers. In 1996, I produced and directed the OZ musical at the high school where I taught and turned the program into a community theater. In 2017 I downloaded the phone app Wizard of OZ - Magic Match and have played 3200+ levels. And now, as a college professor, I take a break from Covid-forced online teaching, sit at my Kawai grand and make my heart sings as my fingers skip down the Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City while that cross-legged little boy sits on the floor next to me and smiles. I was waiting for a Sangah rendition
As a player myself, I've always found this song to be one that will quiet the room. And that's hearing it butchered! Everybody, young and old, seems to have an attachment to this one.
