People are sleeping on the Auto Transfer of photos, I enabled this and I can literally post or airdrop my photos to friends and family in 15 seconds, with the LUTs applied this is pure magic! No longer do I have to get back home late and edit and upload photos to send a link out, after a day out or event
I too, purchased the S9 with my own money... And I gotta say, it is one of the most FUN cameras I've used in a LONG time ! If you KNOW then you know. Loving it !
Honestly I agree, I feel like the amount of hate and drama was really disproportional. The camera as a whole is solid, just missing the evf. That said, there are other cameras in this price range that also don't have an evf and I feel like people weren't too mad about it.
Been shooting an RX1R II for dadcam photos for over a decade. I’ve shot most X100 series through the V, the Q2 and Q3 and keep going back. The S9s LUTs and editing workflows are insane. I’ve passed on picking up a second cam for the better part of 10 years and now the S9 is it.
Great fair video Zach! One thing i want to add, i heard you mention about sigma primes autofocus performance with Panasonic, its true they didn't work quite as good as Panasonic one but it was only true back in the days when Panasonic still using only contrast base detection DFD. From S5II onwards when Panasonic added PDAF, the Sigma works exactly the same as Lumix lens on a Lumix body. AF is great. Unfortunately, most of the Sigma reviews were done with the older Lumix DFD only bodies (including mine) so the autofocus isnt the best. But like i myself have bought a Sigma 45 2.8 and it works awesome with the s9, you should not worry about the AF performance if you want a compact prime lens for your S9 (or wait till later this year when the compact Lumix 18-40 arrives)
Dude The S5 is such a pain to shot with if you rely on AF .... either lumix or sigma lens. I test it a s5 II ( because im waiting to buy either s5 II s9 or potentially is there is a s1h II in the work ) but even when there is no trouble the AF could miss your subject... I had the experience with an olympic champion , thanks that he is my friend , we redo some shots .... but the AF from panasonic ...thanks they finally listen. I would prefer the BEST IBIS in the market other the super performance AF from SONY.
9:00 You are totally wrong with Sigma compact lenses AF on S9, I have the Sigma 17mm and 45mm and the AF is excellent. I am a Sony shooter, too, so I know what is good AF.
The S9 is only held back for me by the lack of a nice 28f2.8 compact prime. If they had one like Canon or Nikon do, I'd have bought this already. Literally I have no other issues with this camera. 😂
I don't understand why instead they created an F8 lens and tossed it to the public for 200$. Like I guess maybe Leica and Sigma would not allow Pana to create a decent L-Mount pancake as it would devour some other Lens sales or what? That Lens would make this exact camera and Sigma FP and FP-L much better options for every day carry around.
Yes, please please compare S9 to X100VI. I am mostly curious about 3 things : Autofocus, IBIS and film simulations between the two. Btw is there a synchro scan setting to fight against banding in photo and video ? If yes does it automatically adjust or you need to fine tune it manually ? Canon R8 has auto mode which finds the frequency automatically and then banding is gone which is really practical with lack of mechanical shutter.
In September LUMIX is bringing out the 18-40/4.5-5.6 (I think the aperture is that) and I am waiting for that it is good then I will be most probably buying one too, and really hoping they take all the record limits off 😢 Great video love the idea of documenting the life of your kid, I do it too but on an iPhone 15 pro✌🏾
As an everyday camera, between this and the x100 series - these are the 2 best everyday cameras based on quality and size. fuji wins in pictures and this wins for videos. I think the next variation from Lumix will fix the hot shoe mount issue which will make it best for pictures as well. I don't think the record limit is an issue but on my x100vi. it doesn't have a video record limit to my understanding so I'm sure that can be fixed as well. Basically s9 is a mini S5ii, and the s5ii is easily the best hybrid camera on the market but yeah this camera is fun.
Since it’s pretty light, maybe you can switch to a wrist strap, that won’t be in the way of the flip screen. I know you said auto focus is very important for you. But I’m very curious about how the compact Pergear 35mm f1.4 or the even more compact and affordable TtArtisans 50mm f2 would perform on this camera. I mostly use manual focus lenses on my sigma FPL, getting a good picture of my son while he’s on the move is a rewarding challenge, but I definitely can’t Hand it over to my wife and expect her to deal with manual focus. The LUMIX 1.8 primes are not pancake lenses but they are fairly light weight. I have the 50mm and 85mm, and I really like them.
I really want a x100vi but I’m not paying over MSRP for one. It’s crazy because before that camera came out Fuji said they shouldn’t have shortage issues and well it was sold out immediately and I can’t seem to get my hands on one at retail price, smh. Jsut found out about the lumix and so far I think this will be my next camera, I think it’s perfect for travel
I'm still consolidating my camera kit, the S5IIX was pretty expensive, so I won't go for the S9, but can't wait for Panny to make the Lumix Lab app compatible for my camera too!

Great video and looking forward to seeing more of your thoughts on S9. Which I’ve picked up too, couple of small sigma primes and it’s awesome. When you talk about the LUTs having a learning curve, I assume you’re talking about making your own. What about the pre-made ones on the LUMIX Lab app?
if this had a hotshoe i'd buy it in a heartbeat. Or if not a hotshoe then atleast a little pop up flash, something this small just screams for that point and shoot look!
Do not fear auto focus, the big W with L Mount is that preformance with autofocus is extremely consistent no matter who made the lens, especially if it’s by companies in the Lmount alliance (Leica, sigma, lumix)
One small note: the IBIS does not appear to be better than the "dynamic" stabilization available on ZV-E1/A6700, and Sony cameras record gyro data which Lumix do not, so you can run them through Catalyst Browse for gimbal-like smoothness (an extra step, which isn't what this camera is about, but it is an incredible once-in-a-while-save-your-bacon-stabilization option this lacks). The IBIS does appear better than Sony "active" stabilization.
I've been pursuing an ultimate "dad cam" for ages - Sony A6000 is one of them. I can operate it with one hand, do grab shots of kids and there is even a fill flash there. I might get S9 used some day just to reduce the bulk of S1 that I have. With 50mm lens that I have for S1 S9 might just work.
Regarding the strap: get the smallrig grip. It allows you to mount the strap on the bottom of the camera. So it does not get in the way and with larger lenses they sit nicer against your body with the lens pointing down. Also, if you use a tripod frome time to time, the arca swiss base is nice to have. And regarding the weight it only adds like 50 grams. Edit: just saw the thumbail of your newest video. You have the grip but still mount the PD achors at the top - what? 😄
I think several missing things like mechanical shutter, flash, and nice pancake lens are deal breakers for me. But then I think this camera will be successful because X106 doesn't exist for people to buy. How unfortunate.
With the ridiculous delay of my x100vi, I essentially thought of the same two cameras. However, I already have the xh2 and gfx 50s II. So, I don’t need an interchangeable lens system. I tend to attach my peak design straps both to the right side or one at the bottom of the camera and one on the right. Works well with my Sony/Fuji with flip screen.
Oh man you had me dying laughing there at the end. 😂 Zach I'm a huge fan and live here in Nashville. If I can ever buy you lunch and pick your brain about a few things I would love that.
Quite possible that the EVF will be on the upgraded version, some time down the road. Until then, I won’t be a customer. I have old eyes, and the EVF is really important for me.
yeah I'm really hoping for a more premium version. but at the same time fuji offers a fantastic built in lens and an EVF on the X100VI for the same price, interesting for sure
After 5 years of using Sony full frame I want SIMPLICITY! I picked up my old OM-1 the other day and wondered where it had all gone wrong, maybe this camera is the answer PS Best to use a wrist strap or a sling attached to the tripod mount then you can hold it out without the strap getting in the way - a trick I learnt with a Sony a5100
ohhhh wrist strap is a great call, thanks for the heads up! this one looks kinda dope - www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1247943-REG/dsptch_srp_bs_blk_l_braided_camera_strap_black.html
Regarding Nikon and film simulations. There's a new Flexible Color Picture Control currently only on Z6III but coming to other cameras via firmware. It has Color mixer and Color Grading sections from Lightroom basically so you can do a lot with them. Panasonic is still better with LUTs though.
I have the S9 from day one. Even though I've criticized it a lot, I enjoy using it. I can somewhat do without the EVF, but the swivel screen is really bad. They should have used a screen like the one on the A7RV or one that flips upwards like the Canon G7X, or something like that, but not just on the side.

Sadly fuji x100vi is nowhere to be found so as good as it might be for photography its like it doesnt exist.
My dad cam is rx100m3 and canon 6d
I've never tried the RX's but always been curious!
This gimmick camera reminds me why i love my fuji, sony and s5ii csmeras so much. Panasonic smashed this toy with a cripple hammer do hard that it makes any ither camera a epic proposition
Zf is the GOAT here
L mount won’t have a real pancake lens to keep protecting the Leica Q btw
i really did enjoy that camera while I was testing, the body is so nice
Intimidating? Hahahaha.
Bahaha! Goodness, the epitome of 1st world problems. And in the age of content creation, everyone is a narcissist.
Feels like you could have went with a Canon R8 (with a custom picture profile) or a Sony A7C ii . Also I love the name Levi
Not real time luts. Custom picture profiles don’t come close!
The ibis sucks ass
@@KonnorGann if you use the picture profile editor, you can get some pretty dope looks that work for JPEGs and Video. It’s my personal workflow
@@WasionKeyno where close to what the LUTs let you do
