Me personally... I would have put 2 together making for a wider shelf... and it still would have worked... but cost twice as much... but would have been worth it.
I played with that idea but decided to go with the spacer idea; to make it more affordable! It is totally doable just like you said it will just cost double, if you are staining it will take a little bit longer and you will probably need longer screws.

This looks great. Nice and easy repurpose. I really like the open feel and look so you can see the wall behind rather than an entirely wooden shelf with a back. Definitely gonna give this a shot!

Genius. That looks really good. To try and avoid the wood splintering, cheap wood will no matter how careful you are, you can mark and drill from both sides. That does require a good accurate measure on both sides though, unless you can take it right until it's about to break through and then swap sides. You can also use a good sharp wood bit, start slow and speed up as you cut through and don't apply much pressure either as you can push through rather than cut through. These were passed down to me when I was (still am) learning and they've all helped in certain circumstances or others. Although it's been 3 years, I'm sure you've grown as a DIYer in that time.
Terrific video! I've seen several DIY builds using the shoe racks but yours has the best mounting approach. I'm off to buy wall anchors, screws and spacers!

This looks awesome! Nice work! Do you know an alternative if someone cannot drill holes into the wall? I rent an apartment and we are not allowed to drill holes in the wall but the shoe rack idea was awesome budget friendly, I was planning on using command strip hanger I just don’t know how I would be able to make it float so that it’s not flat on the wall. Hoping someone can help me with this question. Thanks!

connect the shelves too and bottom with screws. make it floor to ceiling. use bookcase on either side or something to keep upright. also can u not just fill in hole and repaint?
Command Velcro picture hangers. They work great and actually it's what hot wheels gives you when you buy hot wheel wall track sets. Very sturdy and won't damage the wall as long as you follow the directions when you remove them.

No. Without the spacers you will need to glue two together to get a better width for the cars.
