    Lovely build and it looks like it was fun to do. I see lots of comment counselling against discs on an old frame or internal routing likewise...
    I have bikes with rod, caliper, cantilever, direct action, cable disc and runny-stuff disc.... I have bes with a disc up front and one or another rim brake on the rear.
    I would have no worries at all about this conversion.
    I do d that the braking force I apply to any bike I am riding is approximately the same... I don't go around standing it on the front wheel just because I can.
    This guy looks highly competent and clearly has a good, fun vision of what he is after and knows how to achieve it.
    Likewise drilling.... Road racing friends (pre-MTB) were routing cables internally on 531 and other steel frames back on the 70s and 80s and they still have the bikes today....
    So.... Don't get too bogged down on the theoretical physics of a fun bike build.
    To the builder.... Chapeau!
    I lack the welding and fabrication skill, but I admire what you have done here.
    An elegant mix of is and was.

    Keep an eye on your forks. I put a disc brake on old forks like that and it was great for a couple of weeks, but then the fork leg bent into an S-shape! Those old forks aren't designed for the brake load. Also think your frame could bend at your rear brake. A brace from the new mount to the chainstay might help.

    • @TimInertiatic
      @TimInertiatic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep. Frames get a cross brace and the forks need to be beefed up spread the load

    Hey bud, this is the second vid I’ve seen where someone has added disc brakes to vintage road forks. Please don’t do it. The crown junction and the fork legs aren’t strong enough to cope with the stresses. These forks will fail, it’s only a matter of time. Please don’t encourage others to follow this example because it’s incredibly dangerous.

    Agree with you about the crime of bicycle neglect. My brother was always the one leaving his bike out in the rain and a few years back I saw the hand-built 531 Mercian frame he was given just rusted to eff in his damp brick outhouse. Good job I love the little sod. Seeing what you did here I probably should have taken it off his hands although I don't live in the UK anymore and would have needed to box it and put it on the plane with me. I dread to think how much worse it is now.
    I would have just gone with a modern internal hub gear. You can still get something with the Sturmey-Archer name even though it is made in Asia now ( Sun Gears I think ). I don't think you should have drilled holes in the frame ( as you apparently don't now either ) and I hope the frame can take the stresses of disk brakes. I think you may have weakened the frame with the welding but it probably isn't a delicate thin-walled frame so fingers crossed. An option would have been a Sturmey hub with drum brake in the back although I am sure that doesn't come cheap. You could have put a hub dynamo in the front with a drum brake too. That would be much more in keeping with the old school commuter vibe of the bike.
    Overall, I don't think the frame was worth the effort you put in. Clearly you do and it is your effort. I tend to work on older steel mountain bike and hybrid frames that have chromoly tubing and forged fork ends. A lot of labor goes into it and I prefer a bike that has inherent quality. Bikers are waking up to the superiority of steel versus aluminum. I also just can't stand the awful lines of fat frame tubes.

    Yes, I agree: "Front derailurs are the most hideous thing you can put on a bike." I agree with this statement 100% when it comes to rebuilding bicycles. They are just another extra component to hunt down while bike standards change frequently depending on type and country of manufacture. I can see the use in front derailurs on newer bikes or when the demand for changing gears is that important. (ex: racing or mountain) Great job on this. That green is great. I love how you weld your own parts. Makes me want to learn to weld. I can see that saving money and time in the long run. Again, hunting down old parts is such a a pain in the ass. Cheers.

    I have some comments:
    - Removing the stem is way easier with the front wheel on.
    - Front disk brakes are a horrible idea on that kind of forks. It will snap.
    - I don't consider this as a restoration. Anyway I really loved the amount of time and effort you put in this proyect. It's satisfying, innit?
    - I hate the looks of the threadless stem and I don't find any advantajes for using one.
    And the most important: Its your bike and you build it like you want. Congratulations!

    Great video, I normal watch people fixing cars so this was great. Just a tip using Rivetnuts (you might already know this), I put a dab of anti seize lubricant as the nut and bolt will seize up after time. If you want to undo the bolt it will (with the nut) start spinning and won't come undone, anti seize will stop that.

    Nice job! Can you make a video to show in detail how you have fitted the disc brake to the front is attached to the front fork? I have planned to add a front disc brake to my bike (Azor Priest bike ). There are no 28" / 1" forks available with disc brake attachments. It has a very sturdy front fork so I am not afraid of bending twisting or even breaking it while braking.

      It is better and much safer to replace the fork with a disc compatible fork which are also very rare unfortunately. The rear one also needs to be gusseted and even then I couldn’t recommend it. This is some top-level craftsmanship. Have to say though that this is more building a bike from scratch using an old frame more so than a restoration project. Not taking away anything from the product or skill-level, only that the frame was the sole original part, even as this was understandable. Expert work. Think this bike you just built is worth again what it was worth back then in today's dollars (~$1400).

    That front fork is going to collapse while braking sooner or later. It was clearly not designed for such forces, and you didn't use a mount that distributes the force up the length of the fork blade. It's not an exaggeration in any way to say that you could die riding this. Cannondale did a recall on their 2013 - 2016 CAADX bikes because of this EXACT issue.... on a bike engineered and designed with disc braking in mind.

    • @RodrigoSilvaRocha
      @RodrigoSilvaRocha 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I cringe everything i see someone do that a fork not designed for disk brakes in mind (especially those thin ones), a bmx fork not designed for disk might be fine if you weld the disk brakes mounting points since those are beefed up, but this is unnecessarily endangering yourself.

I believe this is because I took extra time do wet sand the frame after it had been primed. How has your experience been with those paint jobs? Does the paint stay on? Did you sand at all after applying the primer? If not, do you have a secret method of doing this that ensures good adhesion? I'm about to paint another frame. The prep work is killing me, but I know it will look awesome :)

    Impressive job mate, the new visual/set looks nice and must ride smoothly with those tires. This is exactly what I wanted to do with my '78 Monark 10 Positron, but part prices in Brasil are just depressive. You're my new bike hero

    • @juliangoulding
      @juliangoulding  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's a cool bike mate, you should try. I know what you mean about depressing prices, nz is not much better. most of these parts I stole off other bikes and the stem conversion stuff is reasonable on amazon.

    how is the chain tensioner working for ya? Im looking for one that will last and take a beating. I was looking at the one you used or a dmr one.

    Hi Julian, do you have any comments about the front fork. Your frame looks almost identical to mine but I can't get the front disc in, how did you resolve this. Thanks, DC

    • @juliangoulding
      @juliangoulding  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly check your disk size. I know I chouldnt get a 180mm in but could a 160mm JUUUUST. Also I had to reshape the fork a little for the wider MTB hubs so that might of helped.

    • @davidcolley365
      @davidcolley365 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juliangoulding Thanks Julian, good point about the disc size. For the rolling chassis I put a MTB wheel in (yes also had to cold set the width) I suspect I tried a 180mm disc. Will try the wheel from my Road bike which has 140mm disc. Stay safe and healthy. DC

    this frame is made of still right ? then it will be heavy, then is it worth to add good stuffs like disk brake and so on, it takes much money i guess, but at least frame is aluminum then it will be good for weight. just my thoughts, anyway good job !!!

De todos modos disfrute muchisimo mirando el trabajo que realizaste, por favor seguir haciendo mas videos de este tipo. Un abrazo desde la patagonia Argentina!!
