First of all thanks to your lovely wife who joined you at night. I rode the Furnace Creek 508 in 2001 with a full time follow vehicle for safety and I would never do that kind of event w/o a vehicle to shield me from traffic. Second of all, great job setting an ambitious goal, training smart to accomplish your goal and recognizing when it is was necessary to adjust your strategy based on factors you can’t control or didn’t anticipate. And you did it! Now, take the (unsolicited but shared from a position of friendship and concern) and find some like minded folks to share adventures like this one! I was a few years older than you on the 508, and fatigue and lack of sleep at had me falling asleep on the bike while riding. Thank God I had a vehicle along for the trip, but a riding partner would’ve sufficed.
Keep the videos coming; I’m on my own ride against the pancreatic cancer beast, and watching the joy you derive from cycling fuels my own passion to get out, walk and ride. Wish it would heal my sore tailbone from a little tumble two weeks ago but that’s a story for another time! 💜💜💜

Hey Mitch, the first thing I thought when I saw your ride on Strava a few weeks ago: "Why the hell he traveled from east to west? He must had a lot of head wind!". I used to drive this road a lot of times from Minden to Ely and back with my glider trailer and most of the time I had heavy westerly wind. But man, what an achievement to do this cycling to the west - big kudos! 😎👌

Years ago, on that road in my Porsche 928, east of Fallon(Top Gun) we were cruising at ~150mph with the radar detector on...straight road, see for about 20 miles, no traffic or side roads when the radar detector started screaming....Shit, lifted and then I looked left to see a Navy tomcat pilot pointing and cracking up as he paced me at 50'... He'd hit me with his targeting radar...I about crapped...then later saw the humor..

Great content! unbelievable mental and physical challenge. I live in Las Vegas and sometimes start my ride in the morning with no wind and end up riding into a 10-20 mph head or cross wind somewhere on my return. The mental struggle is almost as challenging as the physical.

I have done my share of long lonely rides to prove my "warriors mettle", but a I am a warrior and a human... Given the choice of hot wife or more road... I'm sorry, the road will have to wait and I am sure it will be there in the morning. My favorite was Long Beach to Hemet California. 200 miles round trip, it was best when everything after Corona was desolate. There were no cell phones, cars passed by about 15 minutes apart... Nothing but you, lizards, snakes and tumble weeds. I did that route when I needed a break from the world.

@ 5:24 Are you sure your power meter is working properly? It's difficult to imagine that you could push through a tough head wind, that's forced you to 10 mph, with only 166 watts output. Usually, ascending a 5% grade requires 250 watts at 9 mph. I need at least 300 watts more to push it to 10-11 mph up the ascent. At 170 watts, I usually hit between 16 and 17 mph over a zero% grade.

The other cool thing is when you showed the lack of shoulder on the road and the stupid rumble strips that are not only anoy the shit out of cyclists but kill many motorists because when they fall asleep at the wheel and hit these things they yank hard left and oll their vehicles. Highway 50 is not a great ride.
