Richard, thanks for making this video. It was the best video footage and clearest directions I found. I had never performed any repairs before because I didn't have these experiences growing up. My truck is headed downhill, so I had everything to gain and nothing to loose. I saved $200+ dollars by doing the work myself, and bought some more time while I shop for a replacement car.
Below are a couple of comments from my experiences for everyone else considering this project......
    - Like it shows, make sure to disconnect the battery. When disconnecting the alternator you will have a HOT wire.
    - The fan clutch wrench I used was 36mm. It seemed a little loose, but worked. The auto store did not have the spanner wrench to keep the clutch from rotating so I found another suggestion to use vise grips. This worked well, just don't forget to take them off before starting the engine to check coolant fill. Mistake #1, cost about $38 for a new belt, and quite a smoke show.
    - don't disconnect the hoses on the top of the A/C compressor, or you will loose all refridgerant. My system was empty and not worked in a couple years so I didn't loose anything. If your A/C works, you would have the added cost to refill the system. It's not needed to disconnect if you pay close attention.
    - I see you used a black RTV. At the store the blue is for "water", red is for "high heat", and black was normal applications. I used the blue as suggested at the store, because the coolant shouldn't get as hot as the 500F range for the red. Can you clarify the best RTV to use?
    - The use of the air wratchet would make this job go much faster. I was not able to borrow a compressor in time, so I went the manual socket wrench route. Not bad either.
    - I was pleasantly surprised how straightforward this was. The alternator, A/C, bracket and water pump came off fairly easily. The most time was to clean the mating surfaces for the gasket and RTV. The re-assembly went well too.
    - DO plan on replacing the short inlet hose. Mine could not be removed without damaging. This required a trip to the store mid repair.
Once again, thanks for the video. It was very helpful!
    Kevin

Great video. Saved me a huge headache doing the extra work pulling the ac compressor and alternator. My thermostat housing was toast. Replacing upper hose too.

GREAT VID THANX \m/ , and to non pro's with coolant leak issue on these rams remember that the timing chain cover behind water pump has a coolant passage which is prone to blowing out its gasket causing a leak there at top of timing chain cover on both driver n passenger sides calling for replacement of timing chain cover gasket . and most guys say if the chains old get a new timing chain kit , only like 60$ , and do it while doing gasket .

    • @cristinafultz4572

If it's my timing chain that is leaking.
Does that mean my water pump might be okay?

quick tip....take a tie rod fork and put between pulley and the pump and tap it down...that will keep it from spinning...i used a big adjustable wrench to get the fan clutch nut off few taps with hammer...new pump comes with new pulley so hammer away..no need for the special tool..

i literally just did mine. it helps to take the ac compressor off and move out of the way and removing the alternator. it took me forever to actually get the pump off. reason being was that i was too gentle. a buddy finally came over and 5 solids hits on top of a board and it broke free. should have taken about 4 hours, instead of the day and a half, or so since i got everything else off quick. make sure you get a good couple of whacks on top of the old water pump an d it should come off easy. best of luck.

First of all, this video was immensely helpful. I replaced the water pump, thermostat, housing, and bypass hose. The problem I'm having now is that there is water leaking from somewhere above the water pump, but I cant see where. Is there a way to diagnose this?

Nevermind! I backtracked and found that the bypass hose was improperly installed. It's great now! Thanks!

So this bay looks completely different to the 98 1500 van I need to do this on, the AC lines run across the top of the fan shroud I don't think I'll be able to pull the shroud without opening up the AC system :(

You do if you need to replace the upper short hose of the water pump. After 20 years if your already inside replacing the water pump you might as well change that upper hose and the thermostat or otherwise you'll be doing the same thing in a few years.

It sounds like you may have a flow issue. A restriction in the radiator, slowing the flow of coolant, at high speeds can lead to an hot issue at high speeds. Once you slow down the cooling requirements aren't as high and the engine runs cool again.

    • @AirtexFuelPumps

First off is the overflow bottle cracked and leaking? After making sure it was solid I would start with a pressure test of the system. If nothing is apparent I would next use a dye in the cooling system. Follow the instructions supplied as to what conditions and how long to operate the vehicle. I would also use a combustion leak detector to "sniff" the coolant for a possible blown head gasket.
