    I just wanted to say thank you. your video was well done and easy to follow. I finished putting in new bearings in the rear of my dodge ram. I never would have attempted the fix without your help. I made the tool for adjusting the preload on the carrier bearings and I also used my lathe and some pipe to make a tool to press the big bearing on the pinion. A big thumbs up and a thank you from texas

    Thank you very, very much for this video series! Per your guidance, I fabricated a bearing adjuster tool, collected all needed replacement parts and tools and dove into this repair on my 2013 Ram truck. As anticipated, the forward pinion bearing had failed on mine, so I did the same as you and replaced all bearings races, seals, crush-sleeve and pinion nut. Also replaced the axle bearings while things were apart. The whole job went great thanks to your informative videos and commentary. Thanks again for the great resource!!! :-)

    I love it when you bring in the kids. I haven't been doing car repair for very long, and some of the tasks are still kind of intimidating. Seeing kids and other non-professionals is encouraging. They're only doing the jobs which are within their capabilities, of course, but that same rule applies to me. Good job, kids.

    Excellent. Looks fairly easy but I think Ill hire this one. I think I can get it done for less than the cost of materials and tools. . The noise is exactly whats going on with my Dakota. I have replaced every axle bearing and velocity joint in my 4x4 trying to track down that sound. Good video !! (needed the bearings anyway 200,000 miles and still runs good.

    Mine is like jerking and jarring when I put it in reverse and try to back out of my jar of light I was watching the drive shaft when my buddy backed it up just a couple of foot maybe up to 5 ft 6 ft it was like spinning smooth as could be one second and then it would like jerking jar and it will go back to spending smooth I'm hoping I can either replace the gears or put some stop slip in it and do a rebuild kit myself without having to buy the whole rear end and the axles and all hoping but thanks for the video and advice my mechanic buddy knows about all this stuff and is very gifted in this line of art I am not I know basic maintenance and not enough of that even but watching your video has taught me a little bit more about it and also I appreciate the knowledge y'all keep up the good work

    Hi, thank you so much for posting. Excellent Video, CLEAR and EASY to follow. As an amateur the idea of using lathe tools and Shop press to rebuild bearing pinions can be a bit overwhelmed. So I will not take on this challenge of Differential repair, but take the truck to a shop. But the video sure helped me gain the knowledge of the internal working mechanism of of the Differential so I can communicate the issues to the service adviser... And yes, the C-clip retainer is sure SCARY... What a poor design!! Think of how they would engineer parts on the space shuttles is a scary thought... Thanks again. Just SUBSCRIBED.

    So what would cause a loose chain noise when I de-celerate. People keep saying it's the rear differential. But the sound in this video isn't anything like the noise I have. It's up front and sounds like a loose chain.

    nice family there those who work together stay together and damn that c clip was easy to get out, mine was a pain in the behind! lastnight axle would not push all the way in (even hitting it with hammer) had to pry on it (in the diff) and it still wouldnt come all the way but was able to get clip out, then rechanging the axle bearing and putting it back in axle still wouldnt go in anymore? had to pry on it again and wedge clip it a lil then pound it in with hammer..

    this story reminds me when my uncle was watching me. He was a tow truck driver. I watched what he did and where he hooked the chains up and how he secured the flatbed. how he winched everything in and how to attach lights. Eventually I was 13-14 years old doing this job while he was filing the paperwork. I was even given tips just for surprising people I gues. What kid hooks their stuff up secures it and then comes back smiling like what else ?

    The whine from a manual in reverse results from the straight cut gear teeth. The gears engage all at once making that particular noise. Typically the forward gears are bevel cut, like the ring and pinion so the engagement of the gears is progressive and quieter, though not as strong.

    Great videos. Wonder how many miles on this truck; in other words, about how many miles until pinion bearings go bad? I'm only intimidated about setting the pinion preload. Hope it's going to be as easy as you said, torquing in small increments. Also curious you didn't do a tooth contact pattern. If the pinion preload is OK, then the tooth contact should be??

    Would this apply to a dually as well. I have this problem on a 93 cummins dually, I'm debating whether to go with a newer dodge differential but I have not been able to find much imfo on 1st gen dodge dually rear end swap for newer dodge diff. With disc brakes. Let me know what you think. Great video, thanks for the good imfo.

    I went through 2 rear ends on my 03 ram and 1 on my 07 that had less than 35000 on it. Bought an 08 toyota tundra that now has 164000 on it and have only replaced the fluids, 2, soon to be 3 sets of tires and 1 set of brake pads on front and rear. Thats it, nothing else. Buy a toyota to see what the differences are, longer you have it the lore you will realize it.

  • @Ghondi1
    @Ghondi1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a noise coming from the back of my truck. it's an 03 dodge. it's not that high pitch whine that you described as a car going in reverse though. it's more of a roar I guess you would call it. it does it when the truck is moving no matter what speed. I can hear it.

    • @JRTX85
      @JRTX85 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ghondi1 it is either your U-joints (although most the time the make a "whomp whomp" sound) wheel bearings, or differential carrier bearings. my dad's truck had that same roar you are describing...it was the differential bearings

    Great vid. However, doesn't seem it's the issue I'm experiencing. I'm hoping you can help out. I have a 2016 1500 sport model with the 8spd/hemi. I am hearing a rattle from the passenger side rear, possible the exhaust, but not 100% sure. It happens mostly on cold starts and the rattle used to go away somewhat as I drove and the truck warmed up. Now I hear it consistenly, especially over bumps. I haven't had this truck long, and started noticing this rattle as the weather got colder. What could this be? Again, it seems it is coming from the right rear of the truck, possibly behind and/or below the cab. Thanks again.
