Setting spool tension is usually for new baitcaster users or unless you have a million rods and reels all tuned into different lures. Once you get more experienced and use different styles of casting, you turn the spool tension to the point where there's barely any wiggle on the spool (basically off) and use only the magnetic brakes as your braking system. This allows way further casting with minimal effort and you can change fishing lures and styles without constantly adjusting the spool knob. It also trains your thumb so that at the slightest misstep you automatically stop the spool. Eliminates a lot of backlashes when you hit shrubs and twigs near you.
Damn dude I think all youtubers should contract out their hater-defense to you, brutal hahaha! Good video man, been wondering about these non-bearing bearings myself. I dont think the reel is overhyped as a reel, but I do think they overhyped these bushings and it seems to have worked out well for them, smart marketing on their part.
When you set the spool tension for the bearings you had to shake the rod to get it to fall. If you would have loosened it up to what you had the bushings, you might have gotten farther. But it just goes to show you how well marketing works!
the 13 Fishing online troll squad told me that the reel would cast best with the spool tension set like that so thats what its going to be from here on out
jonny jones As far as performance goes, it depends on the model of Steez but they will be vary comparable. The main difference is the smoothness, longevity, comfort and weight difference. I have a Steez A already and a Steez 103L on the way. Compared to my Shimano Chronarchs, the performance is about the same but I just prefer the overall experience with the Steez reels. Ergonomics is a big factor in reels for me so I tend to gravitate towards my Steez reels just because of how "comfy" they are when fishing.
There are some sapphire zirconia bushings cost about 50 dollars a piece that we have built reels with and they will flat outcast any bearing so long as you aren't trying to cast the lightest lure possible.. I have a couple Megabass/Daiwa Monoblocks that are running the sapphire bushings that I use for bombing big lipless traps, glide baits and other baits that are 3/4oz to 2oz on 7'10 big sticks and they will out cast distance wise the longest casting bearings that are dry so they are at their lowest friction and the sapphire bushings will out cast them by 10 to 15% so long as you got the thumb to handle spools that fast with minimum braking... If your running faster spool bearings and you have to increase the braking to handle the spool you totally defeat the purpose and likely would get more performance with a slower bearing and lower braking settings... A loose spool tension and (on Daiwa) a mag force setting of 1.5 to 3 max and the sapphire spool bushing will out cast the freest bearings in distance without a doubt.... I sell the sapphire bushings as well as all TG Rocket, Hedgehog studios, ZPI and Bassart bearings in all models from Stainless 7s to Full ceramic 9s in Daiwa and Shimano bass reel sizes.
I have both. I’ll take that little orange noisy reel. Much smoother and adjustable. Actually one of the best casting reels there is. They’re only $120 now. A beginner should absolutely go with a Z
This fishing reel is so noisy on the cast, you could honestly sue for false advertising. I made a total of 10 cast all louder than the last, I want 13 fishing to see this. Your reel does not “cast like air” it does not “have unfair distance” it is however a 200$ paper weight
caden kea I wouldnt call it a paperweight, it will catch fish just fine. Just not one I would be considering in its price range where you have the Tat SV and Curado 70
The concept reel I want, but don’t have $$$ is the Concept TXZ. It’s got that bushing system that is recessed and some good bearings that give more casting distance and better performance as a good salt water reel
"I would get rid of the internet troll squad (...) and contract out a designer or engineer to design you a proprietary brake system that has way more adjustments and fine tuning than this." Priceless.
Do you like dual-brake system reels? I had a Lew's Tournament MB with dual braking and it is my least favorite brake system. Super finicky in my experience... I much prefer pure centrifugal (Shimano SVS Infinity, Lew's ACB, etc.) or Daiwa's Magforce V/Z systems. For $200 I feel like the Concept Z would have benefited from a higher tier braking system.
David Mann I do. I never use the centrifugal brakes and only use the magnetic adjustment. I find the centrifugal brake reels are harder to fine tune. I must add that I fish for hybrid stripers and make back to back long casts so I’m only interested in casting any given lure as far as I can.
It would be great if you could find an indoor space large enough for you tests. IMO the bushings are just a gimmick, and casting distance is limited by the braking system rather than the bearings.
I use this baitcaster specifically for flukes. It casts like a dream compared to other baitcasters that I have. The tension knob does come loose every once in a while.
An excellent video very interesting. what are the bushings made from are they phosphor bronze? One thing which I will ask is on is the running of dry bearings and why you decided not to lube them after a clean. The oil in the bearings is designed to reduce friction which then also reduces heat. Metal on metal will wear a lot quicker, also the ball bearings will expand due to heat. Im not knocking your test as it was very well executed. Im just querying your decision to run dry bearings? They will not last anywhere near as long as a correctly lubed bearing. Apart from that, thank you for doing the test. Maybe you could test greased against ungreased? Excellent video though, always interested in mods that improve performance.
Are you panning to do any further tests setup with less spool tension? Setup for maximum distance. Being a Curado K fan I’d like to see it beat the Z in fair fashion...Just a thought. I always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
sorry caleb, as per what I said in the video, from here on out the Z will be set up with spool tension set for the specific lure as per the 13 fishing "pro" staff lol.
THE REEL TEST No problem! Just curious if it would help much. Also, where you using the same rod and line when you shot the 1/2 oz lipless with the K? 35 ft average difference is a lot, just wondered if there was any other reason it would be that much less.
all the reels will use all the same rods and lines as shown in this video th-cam.com/video/s5nWLakHiB0/w-d-xo.html Also yes it would have casted farther with loose spool tension but it still wouldnt have beat the curado K
Considering the fact that you were able to cast farther with bushings than ball bearings, I guess it's a win situation for the costumer, don't you think? I mean, you can get a nice cast and no problems about corrosion, for saltwater anglers, such as myself, I think that's a good thing, i just don't know if this bushings are gonna last. I'm going to wait your reviews to be certain if I can import the Z to Brazil.
2 bigs issues with 13 fishing + czb. I have a TX2, a Curado 71XG and a REVO STX gen3 so you know I could compare. First TX2 has a big structural fitting issue, when mounting on 2 rods and tightened, it wasn't flat mounted and had a 1m gap between the front mounting and the back, not a proble for all my reels but not for the 13 fishing, when tightened it made noise and wasn't sturning smoothly, it stopped a lil half on each turn, very disapointing. Secondly on this subject, those beerings worked very well.. for 1 session.. then noise and vibration and moreover DAMN SHORT casting distance.. Didn't understand the problem then I took a wave on face so reel had water on it and.. distance came back as if it was new ! But only for 20 minutes then short casting again.. I notices 2 things: I had to lube those CZB stupid beerings so it works fine as new every session (non sens cause it's supposed to be WITHOUT lube) and I noticed a litle play on one beering.. the reel has 5 days fishing.... I guess I'll jsut buy ceramic beering and get over with this CZB sh*t. My 2 cents
Hi mate. Nice channel! Did you already test those hedgehog studio bearings? I use them in my reels but never compared the casting distance between them and stock originals. Cheers.
Hedge hog studios 7s and 9s are really fantastic super low start up inertia bearings. Without a doubt the longest distence casting bearings are TG Rocket stainless 7s (they will out cast the TG Rocket ceramic Hybrids in distance, the hybrids will cast lighter lures slightly better but distance the SS 7s are best.) ZPI Hybrid 9s are fantastic bearings in shallow spool reels casting light lures. Depends on the reels use what spool bearings it gets. My Pixys get ZPI Hybrid 9s, my Steezs with Megabass Wiffle spools get the same... My Steez 100s or TDZ 100M will get TG rocket SS 7s.. My Zillions with TDZ 100m spools gets the Rocket 7s as well.. It's all about what you want thr reel to do... If im looking to rip a 3/4oz lip less a mile its rocket 7s..... If the reel is a pitching reel it's 100% gonna have ZPI hybrids...
I’d like to know why the reel cost so much money? It has plastic bushings and decent ball bearings in a reel seem to be one of the factors in the price point.
Jimmy theses aren’t just plastic bushings. As you see in the video they perform about the same as decent bearings. Thus, in salt water the concept z makes a lot of sense since they will never rust or corrode and last a lot longer than regular bearings. I have a concept z and in the cold the bushings absolutely suck. They must shrink and make the reel cast way shorter. I had to buy spool speed bearings. I definitely wish I got a different 13 fishing reel (their reels are good). Lucky I got a good deal on the z.
Didn’t you have ghat 2nd “wobbly” bearing on the wrong side? Yeeessss lol. I think the long side takes a different size that the palm side, which should have replaced. Don’t know how you cast, but I’m terribly happy with mine. I hardly ever pick up my curado or revo since getting it. It’s a different beast. You can actually give it a little more tuning and get better
By the way 13fishing got the idea from Gary Dybons and my self to run the bushings..... Because we made so stupid long casting old lews speed spools (the original speed spool) that with 12lb mono on a 7'11 med parabolic cranking stick i had that speed spool and a couple more tuned and with the sapphire bushings was capable of casting 1oz deep cranks out close to 300 feet... We with the wind we wax breaking 300 feet from time to time but a normal hard cast was getting 260 to 270 feet and was a huge advantage because we could get plugs deeper then anyone else and stay on the strike zone much longer because we could out cast them by 100 to 130 feet consistently. Bass masters mag did an article on The 100 yard cast.. With a 8foot cranking stick and a 1oz deep diver could we tune a reel to cast a 100 yards... We did it, the AVG cast was 280 feet and we would break 100y/300 feet on about 1 out of 5 casts. I tuned a Daiwa T3 1016, on a custom 8 foot Gary Dobyons rod that he built for us to do the article on the 100y cast... My company tuned the reel and I did some tuning to the Mag force 3D and the inductor cup on the spool.. The sapphire bushings is what made it possible along with my reel tuning and braking system tuning but without the bushings it would Have been impossible. The article is back in 2015 when the T3 1016 had just been released at Icast... Check it out its a interesting article you will see me and my company in the article, I was the one doing the casting in the Pic as no one else had the thumb capable of handling 50,000rpm start up spool speeds... On a hard cast on a reel with quality spool bearings the start up spool speeds normally are 28 to 32k..we was between 50 and 55k on that T3 1016. Still have both of the T3s from that article to this day.
I guess the next question is when compared to the Concept Z's nearest competitors such as the Curado K and Tatula CT Type-R, how would you rank them and why?
Did those bearings come out of the origin C? That’s very disappointing that the bearing was only 2 feet away. You should try putting the concept z bearings in the origin to see if it’s the brakes on the z that are low quality or if the new bushings are poopy.
The performance of the reel aside, don't you think 13 Fishing at least deserves credit for designing the CZB bushing? The concept Z is as a reel has failed to live up to the hype in my book, no doubt about that. But the CZB, according to your testing, seems to be the real deal.
Shimano has one and it’s only 50 dollars!! So who is getting ripped someone that. It’s this reel for 200 or the one from Shimano for 50!! Yea I say who ever bought the Z
But Fluke master put it up against a and it outcasted it so I wonder if the z isn’t as well built as the a and that maybe the a would be insane with the czb in it
THE REEL TEST yeah he didn’t do the fast speed thing and just leave the video uncut so you know it’s not fake plus he’s sponsored I would prefer an un-bias opinion
Nick Morris I watched his vid. It wasnt fake at all, but there were too many unanswered questions, I didnt see what the brake settings were for the other reels? And which Lews reel was it? And a sidearm cast? If that info was in his video I missed it.
THE REEL TEST you’re right, lots of variables that weren’t explained and because he didn’t show brake settings on each reel it makes me suspicious but.... whatyado
them tackle tour trolls are something else, lol. you are a "reel who're", my favorite fishing channel that actually does no fishing. Us daiwa/shimano guys just sit back & laugh at this over hyped reel. I say its your avg $100 reel, but I'd rather buy a few megabass jerkbaits over this. keep it up bro!!
LOL I go fishing! I went last weekend, caught 2 bass on a jerk bait, and caught a few trout the weekend before. None of the fish were video worthy though and I just wanted to fish in peace without having to worry about constantly talking to the go pro
This is funny , not real surprised. How about if you try Boca ABEC 7 bearing fitted vs Bushings. haha I bet the extra feet gain would beat the bushing. Also i thought the bearing were quieter than bushing. Thanks for your time on these experiments. I'll stay with Shimano, Daiwa, Lews.
Los, no they arent, been using for years in my chronarchs. they do give more decent distance, why many have used them all these years. maybe zpi are better never tried but bocas are not over rated cause they do perform
The Reel Test, well I think you just struck a nerve cause you showed they dont blow away the other reels as their selling point claims would happen. It only makes them look worse acting like that. Not professional at all. I am blown away actually how they act but i guess i shouldn't be surprised in today competitive market. Brings out the worst in people seems.
Its ludicrous to spend that kind of money on a reel and have no secondary brake adjustment when its par for the course on reels that are half the price to half secondary external brake adjustment.
People that complain about being loud are probably the same that throw Boca orange ceramic bearings in and rave about them..... is it louder then it is advertised maybe but does it perform like it should??? I have some loud reels but they perform flawlessly and that’s all that matters. You’ll have your haters and fanboys.
A question would be does it feel the same with ball bearings in it? Maybe they can’t get the tolerances as tight with the bushing vs bearings? Or maybe put the cz bushings in another 13 fishing reel and see what happens?
BOSS HOGG I used it for the first time yesterday and it does cast further than my $50 baitcasters. The durability is still in question but so far it’s a very nice baitcaster for $100. Yes, for $100. I wouldn’t have paid $200 just because of the plastic feel to it and I am a budget fisherman.
Ill be back later to crush the haters :)
THE REEL TEST it needs magnetic cast control.
Sometimes life is full of dirty competion and using the troll brigade it's the only way he/she can do lol
Spool tension still wasn't tight enough. The lure shouldn't drop at all it should actually come up slowly
Coz F you mean the lure should come out fast or slow?
Coz F technically it’s a personal preference dependent on ones skill level. Impo
Setting spool tension is usually for new baitcaster users or unless you have a million rods and reels all tuned into different lures. That's a lot of work. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity over these bushings!

I dont think the reel is overhyped as a reel, but I do think they overhyped these bushings and it seems to have worked out well for them, smart marketing on their part.
Lol.. well nothing I said was untrue :)
I definitely get better distance from this reel than a couple comparable reels, and I like it. But dollar for dollar, Shimano>13 Fishing hands down.
13 Fishing did a great job advertising for the Curado K. Now I want a Curado K more than ever.
you can find them on ebay for a cheaper than retail now
Do you think the Bushings would hold up to heavy Fishing like the Topwater Frog and heavy Jigs etc.??
They listened to you and added the Slide.!!!! Be Proud..
When you set the spool tension for the bearings you had to shake the rod to get it to fall. If you would have loosened it up to what you had the bushings, you might have gotten farther. But it just goes to show you how well marketing works!
the 13 Fishing online troll squad told me that the reel would cast best with the spool tension set like that so thats what its going to be from here on out
looks like the answer is" just buy a baitcaster from japan with no eye popping orange paint!
jonny jones Buy a JDM Steez and you're set for about 5 years at least
how much better if any is steez than the curado k ? looking for reel for 40-80grams plastic lures!
jonny jones As far as performance goes, it depends on the model of Steez but they will be vary comparable. The main difference is the smoothness, longevity, comfort and weight difference. Alexis Takeshita Buy a Daiwa Coastal TW reel. Eats the Z alive and is made for the salt
My 2 cents
Question: is the Chronarch G reel the same identical as the Chronarch MGL? If not, could u do a review/test on the G please. Thx
i dont live anywhere near saltwater. As far as i know its the same as the MGL but more saltwater ready and a non mgl spool
Is the reel supposed to be that loud with the bushings in them?? I thought it was supposed to be a lot quieter and smoother??
Hi mate. Nice channel!
Did you already test those hedgehog studio bearings?
I use them in my reels but never compared the casting distance between them and stock originals.

dang you are quick on the draw lol
THE REEL TEST 😂😂😂 I just happened to be On my phone when I got the notification lol
Would wetting the line make for more consistent casting distance?
I’ve got both the concept z and the curado k I love both and can cast them about the same

I guess the next question is when compared to the Concept Z's nearest competitors such as the Curado K and Tatula CT Type-R, how would you rank them and why?
in the 180-200 the Z would be the last pick out of any of them. brakes are too limited.
where you get that reel holder also?
Lews has externally adjustable centrifugal brakes as well
Lews is made by a different factory
Did those bearings come out of the origin C? That’s very disappointing that the bearing was only 2 feet away. You should try putting the concept z bearings in the origin to see if it’s the brakes on the z that are low quality or if the new bushings are poopy.
Nick Morris no they came from a couple of Abus. I tried to swap out the C bearings but couldnt get the side plate bearing out
THE REEL TEST oh okay cool
What is that little key looking tool called and where did you get it from?
are you talking about the tool to remove the spool pin? Hedgehog Studios
thanks!
Thanks for the review
Did you go as far as cleaning out the factory grease out of the bearings before the test?
watch the video again
Poor zoom, poor sound, wind noise, literally can't hear or see what you're doing half of the time.
True, but you will keep watching lol
The performance of the reel aside, don't you think 13 Fishing at least deserves credit for designing the CZB bushing? The concept Z is as a reel has failed to live up to the hype in my book, no doubt about that. But the CZB, according to your testing, seems to be the real deal.
Phuoc Bui bushings have been around in fishing reels before bearings Ive read from a few sources
Have any bushings managed to match bearings in performance until this one? I don't think the reel is great, but I think credit is due on the bushings.
You will find out soon enough, Im going to put it against the Shimano Bass Rise that only has bushings and 1 roller bearing too.
Nice. Looking forward to that video. Keep it up.
Shimano has one and it’s only 50 dollars!! So who is getting ripped someone that. It’s this reel for 200 or the one from Shimano for 50!! Yea I say who ever bought the Z
Can you put czb in a k?
if the bushing size is the same then yes
bro you are vicious! lol you called them out for gettin kicked off bassresource
Where did you get that reel stand it's bad ass
ebay
But Fluke master put it up against a and it outcasted it so I wonder if the z isn’t as well built as the a and that maybe the a would be insane with the czb in it
Nick Morris of course he did lol
THE REEL TEST yeah he didn’t do the fast speed thing and just leave the video uncut so you know it’s not fake plus he’s sponsored I would prefer an un-bias opinion
Nick Morris I watched his vid. It wasnt fake at all, but there were too many unanswered questions, I didnt see what the brake settings were for the other reels? And which Lews reel was it? And a sidearm cast? If that info was in his video I missed it.
THE REEL TEST you’re right, lots of variables that weren’t explained and because he didn’t show brake settings on each reel it makes me suspicious but.... whatyado
I think Fluckmaster is a joke! Half the crap he says in one video and next video he will contradict himself from the previous video!
Link to the tools plz thanks
I kinda feel like this reel is overrated and way to loud for a new reel. Just saying.
You could hear the reel in their early promo videos!
Lol I thought that too^ the loudness really bugs me
Just in how tough you are it’s sweet to me, but I got mine nib for $94. It’s really sweet. Smoother than the curado k. Yes, I have 2
Don't get mad at the "troll brigade" just because you don't know how to set spool tension.
you must be auditioning for the troll brigade lol
them tackle tour trolls are something else, lol. you are a "reel who're", my favorite fishing channel that actually does no fishing.
None of the fish were video worthy though and I just wanted to fish in peace without having to worry about constantly talking to the go pro
kevin henderson hes talkin about bass resource. 13 fishing got kicked off bassresource cuase their pro staff kept brakin the rules.
If I used looser spool tension the distances would have been alot better. But the 13 Fishing internet troll squad knows better of course.
Bocabearings are over rated, try some ZPI's or YT fusions ... 💪
So why do my metanium 13's bearings have a free spool time of 3:40:03 time compared to the bocabearings of 2:35:45 ...
Its ludicrous to spend that kind of money on a reel and have no secondary brake adjustment when its par for the course on reels that are half the price to half secondary external brake adjustment.
Holy shit bantam mgl is released in America but it weighs 7.6-7.8 ounces.
because its all aluminum
People that complain about being loud are probably the same that throw Boca orange ceramic bearings in and rave about them..... is it louder then it is advertised maybe but does it perform like it should??? I have some loud reels but they perform flawlessly and that’s all that matters. You’ll have your haters and fanboys.
Nick S. It’s not just that it’s loud... it vibrates. They advertised it as casting like air and it simply doesn’t do it. It’s not even close.
Nick S. Im pretty sure its the braking system making most of the noise.
A question would be does it feel the same with ball bearings in it? Maybe they can’t get the tolerances as tight with the bushing vs bearings? Or maybe put the cz bushings in another 13 fishing reel and see what happens?
Power pro v2 would empty that spool i did i know
Do the new diawa rg
perhaps in the future since Shimano Japan is coming out with a new Bass Rise
Took the idea from my comment and made the vid eh?
Lol no, I knew I was going to do this since they announced the Z at ICAST
Cut the music!!!! What a way to ruin a video!
the music stays lol
Man, your zoomed really terrible
Subscribed lol
why do you sound like that? are you sick?
Got my Concept Z for $100. Amazon. Check them out.
Have you fished with it and if so what's your take on it?. was planning on ordering tonight but starting to second guess my decision..
This video hurt my eyes thumbs down
