hey scott, long time subscriber and carpenter from the uk here. just wanted to say that these videos, the most recent ones in particular I can only really describe as soul healing. I've been working in the trade since I left school and have long felt myself disillusioned in my line of work. I'm sure every tradesman or woman has had those moments of doubt.. the physical toll on your body, the pressure to meet crunch deadlines and passing comments of people who look down on anything construction adjacent for whatever reason. can't count how many times I've thought about throwing in the towel and trying something else, especially in my first few years but in the end everything kind of just works itself out. it is the satisfaction that comes with problem solving and making mistakes that makes this so rewarding when it all materialises. sorry for being overbearing on a video about fixing plywood to a ceiling but these videos are just so extremely authentic and encapsulate the best parts of this line of work, thanks for uploading
@jimbon You might want to look up Lighthouse Club The Construction Industry Charity UK. It is a nice way to meet others in construction in the UK and in many other countries around the world.
@@chimpo131 no it isnt, just working in the wrong enterprise or clients can kill your soul. but can be super rewarding working in the right proyect or with the right people
jimbon, i almost cry reading your comment, i feel your path a lot, happy to read your doing better! Scott it's super inspiring, always made my day to see a video of him
Nikita is a delight. So impressed with her giving-it-a-go'iness (which I believe is a Japanese word). She will gain so much craft, skill and life experience in JPN. I am humbly inspired.
Scott I don’t want to loose you to Japan however, thoroughly enjoying watching this reno, Japanese tool shopping and your trip! Glad you’ve extended your trip!
Amazing inspiration guys! I'm heading to Japan myself to stop the decay of a 200yo house next week. Been on my in laws fam forever. Your tips are great!
"This series of TH-cam stories about renovating and working on Nikita's home has been fantastic. 'Japain from the Grassroots' offers a unique perspective, showcasing the lives of everyday people. It's a refreshing take compared to most documentaries. Thank you for sharing this incredible journey!"
6:18 正, you got the kanji right but the order of the final two strokes is wrong. The short vertical stroke is the fourth, and the bottom horizontal one is the fifth.
Excellent episode! I have travelled quite a bit and without doubt the most rewarding experiences are if you get a chance to live with the locals. Experiencing everyday people just going about their lives. For me it's the people and culture I find most interesting. I don't like to rush through a country hitting all the tourist hotspots so I can collect t-shirts. I much prefer to stay in one location and explore and really get to absorb the culture.
Love your content! One reference got me lol " okay the thing about Japanese ceilings you don't need a ladder I feel like Raymond" Keep up with the good work!! Wish I could visit Japan sometime.
This video lead to the rabbit hole where I learned the definitions of Wabi-Sabi, Boho, and Japandi. And I ordered "In Praise of Shadows". The glass paneling surrounding the beautiful library room was very interesting - it seemed a little Mid Century inspired. Love this channel!
Brilliant episode! I have watched all of your videos Scott and this is amongst the best. Beautiful build and a lovely playful fun narrative with excellent videography (especially given challenging lighting). So good! Thanks Scott, Jess and Nikita!
I'm currently visiting Okinawa for the first time and it's such a great place. So fun to see that the rest of the country has some similarities like the food at Lawson
So Scott’s and Jess’ ideal and relaxing vacation is shopping for tools needed for work and renovating a total stranger’s home. Awesome! 😂😂😂 But another question though. Can he hang doors in Japan?
An absolute gem of an episode. The work, the shopping, the language lessons, the tally method, all great stuff! Even the ad was fascinating. And the music! -Really well chosen and edited. ありがとうございます. Arigatou gozaimasu for the weekend Scott Brown (and Jess and Nakita) lift.
Loving the Japan content, we leave in 26 days and this is getting me really excited for the trip. We travelled on the Shinkansen past Lake Biwa on our last trip, such beautiful contry
These videos are healing me, a new breath of fresh air, i'm soo happy you guys have finally gotten to travel again and have fun and super thankful for sharing it too. AND plsss buy a purple makita scott YOU MUST
One of the hardest things I did was doing this exact job on a ceiling. The hari (large tree trunk beams) always got in the way and putting a solid 1.8m plywood through the gap was very hard and required precision cutting and planning. Also, I hope they tightened the bolts in the corners, they are about loose or about to fall off by now for sure ;)
So beautiful having a clear stream flow next to the house! I live in a highly built up island and the swaths of nature in Japan & NZ just brings so much comfort, just d sound of water flowing!! Ah! I need a break!!
Great vid. Japan looks so interesting. Liked seeing Nikita again, interesting project. Topped off with a “she’ll be right” on the killer invertebrate management plan.
The light that Scott bought reminds me of the mini robots in Disney's Big Hero 6. I forsee at least 2 of those fan vest making their way back to New Zealand....
@ 5:00… I've never seen saw "horses" like that… I am immediately intrigued. I've been away for a few videos, so maybe they were in a previous one, but I really dig those. So cool.
after watching the last couple of episodes I've started looking at Kominka houses in Japan to refurbish. Also, I can't remember the last time we (Australia)beat you guys (NZ) in rugby. Looking forward to the next few episodes from Japan! Keep up the good work! SUBARASHI!!!!
Back in the very early 2000s (IIRC) Australia won the Bledisloe Cup for the first time in something like 21 years and the OZ papers proclaimed the Wannabees as the champions of Rugby (as opposed the Thugby) in the known and unknown Universe. I don't think the Whineabees have won the Bledisloe since then. My snarkiness is addressed *NOT* at the incredible and skilful players but the Welsh common name coach....you know who you are Eddie aka Mr Million Excuses.
It's crazy how everything looks so well taken care of in Japan. The USA is the total opposite, we're so accustom to seeing things in decay, it is just second nature.
Brilliant video SBC.. you and Jess are a great team .. what an amazing person Nikita is. Does it rain alot in the area as everything looks very green & lush?🎉😎🎉
First of all, props to you and Jess for volunteering. Is that plywood Luan? It looks like it. Scott, you have to get yourself an a ink line. Forget chalk lines. Far more precise. Japanese carpenters, don't use a chalk line. Enjoy your time in Japan
The adult Mukade (centipedes) are large and bite. One of my friends had a bad dream where his ear was being bitten, then he woke up and realized that it wasn't a dream but a Mukade was on his pillow attacking him. One of the joys of living in an old house in the Japanese countryside.
Its interesting about the size of plywood. Where I live in Northern Japan all plywood and polystyrene is 91 cm by 182 cm. Those measurements are based on what the tatami sized used to be. I heard that they were of different sizes across Japan. Its the first time that I see it. The ceiling looks good now.
Scott, make sure to get yourself a nice kitchen knife while yoire there. Love your videos and your personality.Tired Itish lad here who loves to do cabinet making and any construction/ plumbing work on my nerver competed home. Love toi New zealand, hope to fo back one day.
How impressed were you with the quality of the materials? I was blowing away even with the condition of plywood used for temporary fencing. More than anything I was annoyed with what with the timber quality in New Zealand 😅
Do you guys need a hand? Im a carpenter from germany currently travelling through korea with japan as my next destination. I‘d love to get my hands dirty again so hit me up when yall need some help. Really enjoyed those last couple of videos, keep up the work lads
7:00 fun fact about onigiri: in the Pokemon TV show, it was translated as "jelly donuts" because they thought American audiences would be confused by "rice balls"
Hi Scott. Good to see you in Japan. What is your secret with the pin nailer.? My Spear and Jackson one makes a big dent in the timber in excess of the diameter of the pin nail. I tried turning down the air pressure, but had no luck. Cheers, Rob.
How can I get one of those "air conditioner" jackets? It's cold in the States now, but where I live, it gets very hot in the summer. That would be a game changer for me. Really liking the Japan series.

Japanese immigration would probably ask for his *working visa* for a start.
As an American who has lived in Japan for over ten years, it's fun to see you get psyched for all the cool details that make this place awesome.
