Just FYI - Minka is a generic term used for non-Samurai housing. The Kanji literally means People's House 民家. Traditionally, Minka were the dwellings of farmers, artisans, and merchants. And the Kominka name, means it is a Minka that was constructed more than 50 years ago. The "Ko" part is the Kanji for old. Thus Kominka 古民家 means it is a farmers house, older than 50 years.
I absolutely love the backstory in the last minute or so... ❤ Life and the world are full of surprises!Lovely. (I never use the word "lovely." But it just fits this video.)
you have to take you hat off to the young lady , no knowing Japanese and moving out there learning it on the fly as they say , getting a house and a job wow, all the best for the future Nikita 😃😃👍👍
love how the universe speaks and connects like-minded people. Japan is my bucket list, and I'd love to live there, however, I'm 6 10 and everything seems a little small for me.
Cool video 👍 I’m a finish carpenter/ fine woodworker in the USA, I have quite a few Japanese, saws and chisels I use daily building furniture. I would love to go there and buy some tools. Getting their planes to work correctly is my next project.
Loved this episode. I was in Japan in March at a Kobe beef farm for over a week and absolutely loved the place and the people. Cant wait for the next exciting episode
I lived in Shiga in 2007 for 2 years. Still some of my happiest memories! Omihachiman, Chomeji… beautiful! Well done to you and best of luck with your project!
I am totally in love with this series. My amazon cart is full of random tools I do not need, Thanks guys!!! Also You nailed the transition. Go Team! I really want you to just stay and japan to film tool store asmr videos. please please please.
Loved the visit to the Japanese country house. Nikita’s new life up there looks amazing. Such a breath of fresh air to see that local community welcome new people.
So many things are finally understood: the universe moves at Scott Brown Carpentry speed. Brilliant! I must say, the video is wonderful, the story of coincidences is fantastic, but the serendipity is divine!
Awesome story. I hadn't looked into the symbolism of Dragonflies in Japan, but now I know why I've been so drawn to them in life and when I've been in Japan. Amazing creatures. Thanks for the video. ☺👍
"I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, I’m from Brazil but live in the UK, have done so for the past 20 odd years. I have travelled a lot in Europe as it’s easy, cheap and fits in nicely with our busy lives. Places like Japan has always been on my wish list more so now. Thanks guys !
Brilliant! We visited Japan earlier this year and loved it. However this video style is a lovely insight to the real day to day Japan. We'll be back someday soon! ❤
thank you for sharing your awesome Japan experience 👌🏽 when retired as a carpenter 2022 one of my bucket list was to visit Japan! Since then me and my have visited Japan three times infect we just got back November 17!!! One of many things I love about Japan is its History, culture, and its food!!! Oh forgot to mention you actually never ever retire as a carpenter🤣 friends and family keep me very busy😂 anyway Mahalo and Aloha from Kauai, Hawaii🤙🏾
This is such a lovely video on so many levels. You folk were meant to meet up and be part of changing a part of the universe. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to live in a country where you have randomly placed bronze warriors in the bush, and nobody’s trying to hack it up and steal it. And a local beautifying committee. And a community speaker in your house. Barking deer and random monkeys and snakes. So many levels.
I have a friend from NZ (he's originally from Yorkshire) who lives in Japan. He sent me some photos he and his wife took of these, human-sized cabbage-patch-like "dolls" - it's the best way of describing them - in the country. Just stunning. They were just sitting around enjoying the view and are there all year around, and the locals dress them for the seasons. One was even on a swing in a tree.
昭和二年九月卄八, September 28, 1927. Nowadays 20 in Japanese is written as 二十 (/ni-juu/ literally "two tens") but before it was written as 廿 and before that it was written as 卄 (literally two 十 "ten" together) which is the way it's shown here. So, that writing is extremely archaic.
My father-in-law's family is originally from rural Okayama. His ancestral home (his siters family lives there now) also have a chounai housou (the village announcement system) which is awesome. So very Japanese.
This has got to be one of my favourite episodes, total departure from your NZ life, but a brilliant glimpse into another culture. So my question is then Scott, when are you going to do a hosted trip to Japan for woodworkers/avid DIYers? It could be a really cool thing to offer. I've often thought about visiting Japan, but now I'm hooked. And of course the opportunity to stock up on all those wonderful Japanese tools. Cheers Peter
It's so cool seeing you both in such a different context, half way around the world and yet still able to weave your craft into the broader narrative! Japan looks like a fascinating place and Nikita's bold leap into the unknown is certainly paying off. Keep the great videos coming and I hope the remainder of your trip continues to bring delightful surprises like this episode did for me!
Nikita, you're living my perfect imagined life (rural Japan ... traditional dwelling ... being an apprentice at such a fantastic carpentary workshop [hello Futohi-San ! ] .. a mountain chair lift by a lake near your house .. I'm so envious ! ). I wish Nikita many dragonflies in life. I wish everyone many dragonflies in life ! But those long toothed death monkeys. No, I don't wish those on everyone. I'd be on DefCon 5 immediately if they showed up 🙃 All the best and greetings from Prague ! I will stay in that guesthouse one day hopefully
My baby sister. We're so proud of her!! Thank you for giving us a proper glimpse into her world. You guys seem like legends :)
Does she have social media? We live in Japan and maybe we could visit her "guest house" someday. ;)
best square space transition yet
came here to say the same 👏
Oh deer!

Its so healing to see culture appreciation to this degree and spreading love and insight on these otherwise smaller cities and towns. Great video!

I do not know how to describe how much this video just made my day!! All the best from germany!!!!
you have to take you hat off to the young lady , no knowing Japanese and moving out there learning it on the fly as they say , getting a house and a job wow, all the best for the future Nikita 😃😃👍👍

Brilliant episode, Nikita is an amazing person
Please, more. Like regularly more of this. Pretty please.
🦌The SB2127 is definitely a Scott Brown Edge bander as it has the same paint scheme and speed stripes as The Scott Brown van.
🚙
When it's meant to be, it's meant to be! What a lovely ever evolving story! You go Nikita!
One of the best Square Space segways yet 😂
love how the universe speaks and connects like-minded people. Japan is my bucket list, and I'd love to live there, however, I'm 6 10 and everything seems a little small for me.

That speaker was dope! The bing bong at the end was so epic and so 1980's train platform! Loved it. Great episode guys!
Loved the visit to the Japanese country house. Nikita’s new life up there looks amazing. Such a breath of fresh air to see that local community welcome new people.

What an awesome collab! Sounds like the stars were aligned for the 3 of you haha. Looking forward to seeing more work on the house! Enjoy Japan!
I watch just about all your videos. But I'm super excited to see the videos from your time spent in Japan.
So many things are finally understood: the universe moves at Scott Brown Carpentry speed. Brilliant!
I must say, the video is wonderful, the story of coincidences is fantastic, but the serendipity is divine!
Loved the dragonfly story.
Great episode. Love the back story about her buying the house and how she met you.
Awesome story.
I hadn't looked into the symbolism of Dragonflies in Japan, but now I know why I've been so drawn to them in life and when I've been in Japan. Amazing creatures. Thanks for the video. ☺👍
The Dragonfly story was inspirational.

What a wonderful trip you’re having, really enjoyed the latest exciting episode.👍👍
昭和二年 is around 1927. Love how they kept the record with the beam.

The square space and the “Oh, dear” got me chuckling for quite a bit!!
There are three things i know about the japanese for sure. They make great cars, they make great tools, and they are very humble
Also great trains, food, art, and beautiful traditional buildings.
@@pcatful i said three for sure, but you are right on all accounts.
that was so cool .. I hope Nakita opens her home to guest in the next fews years so we can visit and appreciate her new home town
What a gorgeous post 🙏
great music choices for this episode
She needs to start a TH-cam channel
lol... the 'square space' - so good! Best original yet! I can't stop laughing... rewind!
