I wouldn't call this urbanisation. This is the opposite. Urbanisation in my mind means densification. This is not densification. If you ignore the apartment buildings, because good luck finding new apartment building in america they are either old or like 50 stories, not the midrises we see here, this city is less dense than a european village on account of the Parking lots.
This is a weird convergence of my Half Life 2 watching habits and Urbanism subscriptions, and I’m all for it. The right video in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.
Next: osha aproved highway 17 or renovate highway 17 Reasons: -broken safety rails -collapsed roads -collapsed bridges -rockslides Theres also a leech problem so we need to increase the seagull population.
You've managed to convince me the only reason Half Life 2's Gordon Freeman is helping the resistance and trying to drive the combine out of Earth is to have the freedom to create 17-lane highways, 3 story parking lots spanning 30 football fields and infinite walmarts, his actions are part of a greater plan.
fun fact: out of the four videos i've made since january, this is one of two that's taken over a month to make from start to finish. the good news is that stuff is going to start coming out a lot faster, so stay tuned (including some very special content as well). i currently have no intention of releasing the map(s) used in this video on the steam workshop. maybe i'll change my mind though. hope you enjoyed! peace out.
Man I can't even begin to imagine how much efforts you've put into these videos, love your content man keep it up you're literally my favourite youtuber rn!
I certainly enjoyed, and with some refinement, I think you could release it on the Garry's Mod workshop and SFM workshop if you really wanted, and let's be honest, most of us really want to play on this map. However, we do not control all of your actions so it's up to you what you want to do
One of the reasons half life 2 grew on me so much is that it really does remind me of the environment I live in 😭. The scenery is amazing. I still pause and look at the scenery when replaying. There's just something about half life 2's style that makes me love it.
Unfortunately mantis men have a low natural lifespan so the council never thought to allocate funds for long term road maintenance. The whole city collapsed into concrete dust and massive muddy potholes in the next few years...
Combine be like "What happened to that one small planet we control?" "Well, an infrastructure development project was implemented, and the head developer led a revolt and the extermination of our entire security force using bugs."
You can optimize the parking spaces by applying a parking lot stripe overlay to the surface, or if the texture is available, a parking space texture that can just loop This has been your drive-thru hammer advise
I remember when cyberpunk 2077 came out, I was taken aback by how pedestrian friendly the city was. There's only like 6 parking garages in the whole city!
"Make it more American" You do realise the that there was a version of City 17 in the Half-Life 2 Beta that was exactly that!!!! Just saying. It Exists.
One thing that is amusing is that part of the design of City 17, is that it is settled within the European countries somewhere sorta. (Exact location isn't well... specified because both terrain and city layouts don't really match any real world cities or terrain directly AFAIK) but.. like also the fact that it is a city kinda frozen in like the late 1990s to early 2000s roughly if I recall the time periods of the Half Life universe correctly for when the events of the Black Mesa incident took place... but uh... regardless, There are just many things a city of that age would... kinda sorta lack in areas, alongside in terms of what would have been available fo the original local population prior to the black mesa incident... so ya know.
I like how the cars drive over the dashed lines. Nice detail. Finally a perfect city! No sidewalks, all hot parking lots that catch the sun and don't drain rain water!
Thank you Mooldbun for bringing this topic to light I can't thank you more for doing this, when I watch other TH-camr's commentary on the HL2 world I am in awe at how they missed this crucial point, this is C17 Eastern European Slavic post commie hell hole that didn't enjoy the same freedom and democracy as America, this is why you don't see big highways that ensure our freedom of travel, to traverse this land that God bestowed it to us and to bare witness the beauties of this Country, a big parking lot that spans entire blocks of neighborhoods that ensures the citizens of this country the freedom of parking where ever we want without risk of commies taking our property away, HL2 tears down the fake utopia of "walkable cities" pushed by communist liberty hating people.
i'm planning on doing a "behind the scenes" in the near future. @AzuriteCoast is correct that gmod was largely used for the in-game portions but the maps were all "handmade" with hammer, which took up a good portion of this video's development
If this really was a video the seriously criticised a fictional city in a video game for its bad urban planning, it would have been the key piece of evidence in my "we are running out of things to make content on and really fast" TED talk.
Y'know, I thought this was gonna be a video about looking at City 17's layout and theorizing what would make the most efficient layout while following a bunch of city building codes and guidelines, a la those videos that count how many OSHA violations something has, while still keeping everything intact. What I got was much better.
Idk if you have checked, but most of HL2 and HL Alyx are made with inspiration from the city of Sofia Bulgaria. Art Director for HL2 Was a bulgarian called Viktor Antonov. He made the push to make city 17 the eastern European city it is today. Great stuff, makes me proud to be Bulgarian
Ok here’s one thing that really bugs me about this since C17 is somewhere in eastern Europe and in the footage it shows mainly American locomotives meaning that they would have had to get multiple American locomotives and railcars all the way into Europe and not only that some of the rail infrastructure might have to be completely redone to fit the amenities of American rail equipment and also some regulations might have to be changed completely too Meaning that a lot of just the rail system would be extremely expensive.
i remember seeing footage of this one hl2 gameplay where gordon went to an abandoned city WITH ruined cars civilians driving cars is possibly (citation needed) canon, they were regular wrecks and not combine vehicles, also given that (im assuming that most CPs were originally HECU once the countries surrendered) this could be canon too in another city
Still better than Chicago, which is like 90% suburbs, 5% city center (where traffic is horrible, and it takes forever to walk to places), and 5% O'Hare International Airport. Good god, O'Hare has SO. MANY. RUNWAYS.
