  • Is the ongoing Buckingham Palace refurbishment a waste of taxpayer cash?
Pictures show part of the work - to the East Wing - has been completed and will be on display to the public next month, although the full renovations aren't expected to finish for another two years.
The project will cost more 369 million pounds - paid for by the taxpayer through the Sovereign Grant - and it'll undertake work such as replacing dangerous electrical cables, repairing floorboards, removing asbestos and just giving the place a spruce up.
It's all about making the palace fit for future generations, and to protect it from the risk of fire and flooding.

Could Albie A for once in his life be unpredictable, unconventional and surprising? One appreciates his conservative / Conservative (or has he switched to Reform?) POV assures him his job on GBN, but how old is he? 20 sthg? For a gay man he is terribly status quo: he and Duggie Murray should settle down together.

I don’t mind them doing it up but they could use it to make money for the country once it’s finished seeing as no one lives there right now. The King could live in one of the other royal palaces/castles/mansions.

Upkeep of the White House is much less than upkeep for 12 palaces for like 4 people and 3 kids

I don't know where you got the figure of 369 million pounds from but the total sum with everything finished is 450 million pounds .
The point is this , crown estates are of of the biggest landlords in the state of New York .
So crown estates belongs to the royal family , so they could pay for all the renovation work themselves .
    It's high time for a republic .

The Palaces etc. are NOT owned by the Royal Family.
In 1760 King George III hand over all the income and expenses of the Royal estates to the treasury in exchange for the Government providing an income for the Royal Family, known as the Civil List.
Basically the Royal Family are merely tenants, as a result all repairs and renovations are responsibility of the Government . Much the same as the landlord tenant relationship.
Also Buckingham Palace isn't just a Royal residence, it also has many of it's 775 rooms used as offices for staff that swells upto 900 people in the summer. Likewise the East Wing is open to visitors the proceeds of which goes to the Treasury.
Finally if we became a republic then our Head of State would have to live somewhere as would his or her family.

No because while it is the residence of the British monarchy, it is a historical building that needs looking after and the things that the renovation is removing do need to be done for safety reasons not only for the monarch but the tourists as well
