  • All Cat Diesel Truck engines have Fuel Transfer Pumps, it is good idea to know how they work and how to change them. This video tests, replaces, disassembles, and installs one on a C15 Cat engine.

    I imagine finding OTR trucks with CAT motors are becoming rare these days since CAT stopped making engines for OTR trucks for awhile now. Plus, with all these new emission standards.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They aren't rare yet, Cat made a lot of engines for a lot of years and many people don't want to get the heavily emission restricted engines. Of course there are a few less of them every year on the road, so sooner or later there won't be many.

    Quick question I’m a mechanic in the marine corps I work on these engines all the time and just did a transfer pump the other day on a c-12, I’m curious as to why mine has a gasket but no O-Ring, seems a bit odd because just looking at it seems like it would require an O-Ring such as the steering pump which is directly behind it on our engines. Either way it’s a CAT gasket and ended up doing the trick. And also on all our c-12s there isn’t 12 point bolts they are Allen keys which is a pain in the ass to get in there, same as the steering pump.

    Before removing the pump is there a shutoff valve on the main fuel line to keep the tanks from emptying when the line is removed? I have C13 that Im doing a transfer pump on. I don't see any valve on the engine side so kind of curious what keeps the fuel in the tanks ones those fuel lines are removed.

    I have a question for you to see if you have any answer, I have a cat c15 with conversion to a single turbo PDI. Every morning I have to drain the first oil filter a bit because if the truck doesn't have power, the turbo doesn't go up to 25, after I do this it usually goes up to 45 and on many occasions when I'm going up a slope it happens the same the force ends and the turbo lowers the pressure to 25, I have already changed the oil pump but the problem continues, if you could give me an answer it would be of great help. Adept, my troke broke down coming off the highway(C15 3406 engine). The ignition wire on the breaker corroded and broke off. I had the vehicle towed about 3 miles out of traffic but the truck was left in gear while being towed. I replaced the breaker and was able to get the truck to crank but now it wont get fuel in the lines. As if the pump isn't working. I have refilled the filter and prime the pump on the filter. I have used some starting fluid but once the filter runs out of disel it shuts off. Could the tow in gear ruin the fuel/transfer pump

    lee c13. truck always starts perfect. runs good till it's ran for 1/2 hour or so. going over 55 mph for 10 min or so, the truck starts to miss and lose power. we are running 85 psi fuel pressure. the needle bounces a bit and it is a fluid filled gauge. we have done everything we know of. all new lines. new primer valve. we finally installed a clear hose on the suction side. it starts perfect. runs perfect. until heavy loads and all the way warm. when we shut the truck off, the clear tube sucks and fills with air from the line going to the transfer pump. where do you think this air is coming from? it does not come from the tank. is it possible the seal in the transfer pump will allow vacuum when not operating to allow air to enter back into the return line?

      Idk what adept would say but....I have a friend with a 6nz single turbo and an accert c15 with duals. Both are hot rodded to the hilt. Regardless of the hot rodding...no matter what has been done to both trucks....the accert pyro stays several hundred degrees lower than the 6nz single turbo and always out pulls it. The accert has stock dual turbos and the 6nz has has big dog turbo...pdi....etc...and now a Blalock. My friend swears to god he will never buy anything else but an accert twin motor truck. Of course...the accert cylinder decompression system is disabled and so those accert failures are void. I drive both trucks every week...back to back. The accert always wins on power and pyro temps. One trick is to lower the compression on the accert to 16:1 pistons (from factory 18:1). They learned this the hard way with failure over and over.... the 16:1 pistons with accert delete was the winning ticket.

But I kept it because it's the original and I'll get it rebuilt at Turbo here in Atlanta. It was a really well made pump from 1995 and I can get them to increase the flow. Plus it really looks good on the front of the motor like when you see a yellow Cat air compressor with the red tag, it just looks right hanging on the side of the Big Kitty. I just inspected a truck I wanted to buy and rebuild.
    2004 w900 with a c15. Had a engine fire due to leaky fuel filter housing squirting fuel and started a engine fire.
    Seller changed all electrical lines and decided to forget to mention the engine fire. But didn’t bother to clean all the burn marks on the engine.
    I asked why the engine stickers were burned off and what’s all the black stuff on the engine.
    He said the head was charged and they used a junk yard head and didn’t clean it. Lol
    I couldn’t make this shit up if I tried.
    See the pics for yourself.
    It’s a blue 2004 w900 being sold by a dealer in Ogden Utah for 24999$.

    • @ShainAndrews
      @ShainAndrews 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd estimate the fire was started by something other than a fuel leak. I've had a line crack spraying fuel directly on the exhaust manifold. Lots of white smoke, but uneventful otherwise. Electrical short on the other hand... those will take out equipment in short order. Sounds like the truck owner wasn't much for maintenance in the first place, so getting a straight answer is probably not happening.

    How do you determine whether to replace the spring kit or the entire pump? I changed the regulator in the filter base but the truck still doesn't seem right. When I use the hand pump I can hear a clicking in the transfer pump. Is that normal? I need to find a gauge instead of guessing.

    • @johngoldsmith6629

      Need to check PSI under load. Spring kit only works on the newer pumps. Pumps do have a check valve in them. I have stretched the spring to compensate for wear. Again you need a gauge to make sure what you did is correct.

    Hey Josh,
    I have a 2005 C15 BXS that sometimes just takes off like a shotgun, however, after sitting for, say, maybe a week or more, it just cranks and cranks forever before it finally fires. Could that be my fuel lift pump, or is something else causing all the fuel to drain back into the tank?
    Thanks In Advance.

    • @johngoldsmith6629
      @johngoldsmith6629 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      More than likely your fuel is running out of the cylinder head. Can leak onto the piston. Which when you start, cranks up and dies. Black smoke out the exhaust as it burns this fuel off. Or leaking out supply or return. You can replaced the 75LB regulator. Make sure you torque it. It will distort and change psi. I put a one way flow check after base. Take fitting out and install it, reinstall fitting and hook hose back up. If on supply side you can make a P-trap in line to prevent fuel from draining back from fuel transfer pump. You can also put a one way flow check in supply side. I like to put my check at splitter. So fuel is trapped all the way to fuel transfer pump. You could put a check on each supply line at tank.
      If you have the tooling you need to install sight glasses at return hose before 75 regulator. Between cylinder head and secondary fuel filter. Another one between primary fuel filter and fuel transfer pump. See which one(s) go empty after setting. If it's leaking on the piston you have to pull exhaust manifold. Plug turbo oil psi line and let it set. Usually the next day or so have someone start engine and see which cylinder has the black smoke out the exhaust.

      Libertarian Philosophy I would check fuel psi, air in the return and a cylinder cut out test. Two types of cut out test. The four cylinder Cat has. And the one I came up with, data log RPM's. Set to 2120, no fan, no A/C, air compressor not pumping, operating temp. Cut five cylinders out let it run one minute and go to two, kill one and so forth until all are completed. Should have 8 data points to look at. First and last all cylinders firing, middle each cylinder. Looking for balance that cylinders are holding about the same RPM's.

    Between the motor and the top of the aboveground fuel tank the owner has plumbed in a ball valve. Mechanic installed newly rebuild fuel transfer pump.
    System ran for a minute, then it stopped. Mechanic traced the return line and found the return line ball valve in the closed position. If the diesel return line is capped what would happen? Would the gears in the pump break, the pressure regulator spring break, or would the system flood out because there was no where for the fuel to go?

It started all this when i took the fan blade off and installed a A/C compressor belt but at the same time i replaced the oil temp gauge. • @johngoldsmith6629
      @johngoldsmith6629 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you have a OEM problem. First who is driving the fan, Pete or Cat? If Cat you need a test light know which wire is coming out of the J1 connector. Use ET turn the fan on and see if the test light comes on. Best to use a pin puller and remove the wire and insert a test wire. You don't want to damage your wire. Also you have a fuse put in by Pete. You need to contact them to see if they will tell you location. Could be in fuse panel (sometimes not marked as fan), behind speedo. The fan light on all the time tells me you got a wiring problem. Some use a relay to turn fan on. You need to know if you have a N.O. system or a N.C. system. Air to engage or disengage. The more you know how your system is wired the easier it is to fix. Engine prefix would help and is always helpful when asking a Cat mech. a question. If push comes to shoved you could rewire the fan circuit system. Make sure you put a fuse in the system. You want to protect that ECM.

      Hey I'm an owner operator based in North CA. It's been a pretty slow winter till now which is always when the rig throws out it's most costly repairs..... Problem, inner timing cover engine oil leak id rank between moderate and severe. Oil is dripping from the area just forward of my power steering pump on the inner timing cover side seems to be a weep hole there. My wallet is quivering already any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Are they a 700 hp cat maybe 3506

      No, a C-18 is capable of over 1000 HP with the correct arrangement.
      There is no 3506, the 3500 series engine starts at 3508 then goes 3512, 3516,3520,&3524.
      There IS a 3501 engine, but it's used primarily for verification/testing of components and not available for purchase to my knowledge.
