"The subject of the great fugue begins with one note propelled towards the trill, as though this impulse creates a spiritual flame.
It bursts out, frenetically, ceaselessly, reminding us of the motif of the Promethean fire, and this spiritual flame is developed over and over, leading up to, we could almost say, cosmic explosion, reaching its pinnacle. From this blaze of the Promethean spark emerges a soothing, consoling song (the central fugue in D major), a fleeting moment of rest before the stretto begins, one of the most frantic pieces of music that you can imagine, summoning up a general hysterical panic, before falling into the obscurity of the universe, where only a mysterious palpitation can be heard (bars 373-383) with vestiges of the beginning of the subject of the fugue.
Then order is restored and the Promethean flame returns at bar 384, heroic, to triumph and impose this supreme mission of awakening the latent spirits of mankind.
After he finished his ‘Hammerklavier’ sonata, Beethoven said: ‘Now I know how to write.’ Indeed, he used almost all musical techniques possible: retrogression, contrary motion, canon, imitations and inversions, and he would tell his publisher when he handed over the manuscript: ‘Here is a sonata that will give pianists a challenge when it is played in 50 years’ time."
© HJ Lim, extract of essay on Beethoven Piano Sonatas in 2010.

HJ Lim in this live performance still keeps the record among the living pianists having improved her speed in the first fugue of the Hammerklaviersonate up to the 4'46 minutes [ i.e. a crotchet in 144] prescripted by Beethoven himself and later confirmed in an edition by his pupil Carl Czerny. Igor Levit worked really hard to reach Lim but he lies with his improved 5'01 still 15 seconds behind Lim who has improved herself too. The conductors Elliot Gardiner and Roger Norrington also conduct Beethoven's symphonies in the prescripted speed and affirm HJ Lim's opinion of interpretation of the sonatas and the correctness of Beethoven's Mälzel indikation.
In a converstion with HJ Lim Roger Norrington emphasized that not Beethoven's metronome was false but the slowness of many interpreters by lack of craftsmanship.

Just Brilliant! Once again she shows a combination to total mastery and emotional passion. If she had one flaw it was a tendency to over pedal. Not here. Maybe because she has changed to a Steinway from whatever she used in her cycle. She is one great musician. I can't imagine what the big promoters are waiting for. Why isn't she playing in Boston and NYC and LA and Chicago, with the big orchestras or in solo gigs. A real gift to people who love this kind of music.

Having learnt to play the fugue at 50% the intended speed, it doesn't matter how often I watch this performance, this tempo simply does not look humanly possible. I want to hear her play the first movement. Does she reach Beethoven's intended tempo there?

Yes, she plays all movements of op.106 the first, the second and also the third in the prescripted speed without any mistake. The same
in all the other Beethoven sonatas. She doesn' t have any technical problems and musically she is capable to play how she really wants and not how she is able to act like most of normal pianists pitily are forced to do pretending their incapacity being "personal interpretation".

This performance has even more Fire, Passion and Viscereal INTENSITY than Yuja Wang's performance at Carnegie Hall. There is really NOTHING quite like it. IT STANDS ALONE AT THE PINNACLE OF TRANSCENDENT MUSIC!!! The Fugue is at the outer limits of human understanding! Muss es sein? Es muss sein! She understands Beethoven, the revolutionary. What is the essence of revolution? Acceleration of time. The work of revolution may well be realized through the evolutionary process - with a few centuries more. The only convincing Beethoven to me so far has been the Gardiner one. Now I add one more artist, who wholeheartedly, convincingly and brilliantly embraces the spirit - "De l'audace, encore de l'audace, toujours de l'audace!"

The same fury as Schnabel , this same dynamic and victorious tenderness completely out of every border or limit .... but this time under the fingers of a WOMEN .....
If I am "sexist" ? Yes of course I am . But only in the sense I make a DIFFERENCE between man and woman . But no judgment about some intrinsic value . Is that clear ?
And here , instead of the testosteronic tempest of Artur , his metaphysical vertigos , HJ is giving us a lot quasi-divine whip lashes just on the face , her fantastic speed and will , she is on command , not becoming the missing rocket in which Artur was leaving the earth for his lonely trip without any return ..... because SHE will come back .
The aeternal and hypnotic image of the dominant women . Goddess .
The Hammerklavier of Yuja Wang was a disaster .

Hideous in the extreme. This is NOT a study by Czerny.

Czerny, Beethoven's not deaf pupil, later confirmed that speed! The speed is part of the music!

HJ Lim plays the first fugue in the prescripted speed by Beethoven of 4'46 minutes! Sokolow needs boring 6' 20 minutes! So it is clear who is the better pianist!!! Lim could it play like Sokolow but Sokolow not like Lim! His technics is too bad how you can see in his awkward movements!
