These versions of the games are a great example of programmers having great technical skills but very little understanding of good game design and how to create a fun user experience. :-o
idk, if you look at a lot of licensed games from 1993 onward on the genesis, these look pretty chintzy by comparison. i'd wager a more competent developer could absolutely port the NES originals to genesis hardware and have it be significantly more playable than these obviously super rushed out bootleg ports.
i posted this a year ago and neglected to mention, but someone in russia literally ported SMB1 1:1 alongside battle city so 🙃

the genesis doesn't have a hardware mode 7 equivalent, but it DOES have a basic vertical tile scrolling system. they totally could've just sheared it to make it look like it's rotating. that's what puggsy does for some of its visuals.

It's time for the yearly "I should've been studying for finals but instead I made this" video. There's definitely some errors and evidence that I stayed up past midnight on several occasions while making this, but hopefully it's still plenty watchable. This is one of the only videos I planned at the beginning of the year that actually came out, the other being the DKC4 Redux, so I'm happy that I was able to get this one done. I hope you guys enjoy!

Also I kind of call bs on the timeline that Jam 6 came first because of stuff like the stretched out picture of Sonic in between levels. Looks like a quick hackjob replacing what was there in Mario 2. It's possible that both were developed simultaneously with Sonic Jam 2 being based off of earlier code though.

When I first heard of Super Mario World (the 2nd game) at first I actually didn't know it was actually Squirrel King. I've heard of The Mario version first. When years passed on and on, I accidentally discovered it on TH-cam.
Also, I first heard about it on a video called "Crappy games that shouldn't exist"

Well sonic jam 6 is the first version of smb.2 98! And in Sj6 the 2nd player is still knowen as luigi!
Then why wouldn't it be considered anything but a hack? I think it's pretty clear that Jam 6 was based on SMB2'98, even if Jam 6 ended up releasing first.
So mabey Sj6 is a proto of Smb2.98? But the chip on Sj6 is a 1 (the last NO.) And tge NO.2 is on the first game you played!
And btw the bowser in 6-4 is glitched because thats what he looks like by default

You knew when you edited the video that this bootleg was indeed a skin of the other Squirrel King game (of which I didn't know, thanks) and Chip'n'Dale and chose, because it's your style, to share your first reactions, and I'm well within my right of showing that I immediately recognized the inspiration for it, as Chip'n'Dale is a game I personally owned. And having that “spoiler” in the comments doesn't detract from the experience in any way, shape or form…
As for not watching the video until the end, I can't really tell you why I didn't, because I posted my comment months ago, but if I had to venture a guess I'd say that I was either busy with something else or got bored halfway through (which says more about the boring quality of some of these bootlegs than your testing and editing skills, don't worry aha).

I'm guessing English isn't your first language. The game was made as homebrew for the Mega Drive, but it was distributed in Russia without the original owner's knowledge or permission.
And I'm not required to do anything just because you tell me to. I already have something planned that I've been planning for months and I'm not dropping it because you want me to cover something.

The first Mario game should have been run on 50hz PAL.Because I'm pretty sure they made for that standard.
That's possible, but one thing that's weird is that the music seems designed for NTSC consoles. I've seen this same argument made for Somari in the past but it doesn't seem right. BMB games on the other hand are definitely meant to be run in 50Hz.
It's annoying how Genesis emulators don't seem to automatically region swap like NES emulators do.
@@PirateGameThing One other thing about Mega Drives is that the clones think they are NTSC consoles. So if you hook up a Sega CD with an early clone they think that it is an NTSC console while it's not.
On the other hand.Some pirates developed games for NTSC consoles in PAL speed. Like Aladdin by Hummer Team. Because most of the clone consoles are (NOAC) NTSC consoles running in PAL 50.

Hack 3 - The physics and sounds effect are really bizarre. The fact that the Koopas just turn into unshelled but don’t just leave their shells. The weirdly muffled music. The graphics and levels are mostly authentic .Too bad everything else is bad. Still better than #1 though

Why not just do a commentary with your voice? So that way people don't have to pause to read the text every 5 seconds.
I try to make the text as bold/readable as possible and on screen long enough so that the watcher doesn't have to pause but sometimes I'm not good at judging that. After doing 5 years of text commentaries it would probably be really weird to switch all of a sudden.
