- Diagnosing and replacing the engine temperature gauge on a bobcat 742 skid steer loader with a Mitsubishi propane engine. Replacing the hour meter. And operating the machine.

Hey Andrew, usually you want power to the hour meter through the engine oil pressure sensor, that way you are sure that you are only counting real running hours... and not just hours that someone forgot to turn the key off ( this happens a lot) probably that is why you werent receiving any positive.

Actually bobcat does this from factory. There will be a oil pressure switch somewhere on the engine specifically for the hourmeter

check for a ground when the engine is running. the ground is switched through the oil pressure sending unit. If there's oil pressure the engine is running . The hour meter won't run up time if there isn't any oil pressure.
Lightning Fabrication Sounds like you know these machines.
That would be a lot more accurate than having it rack up time when the key was on. Not that you would have much time with key on, but you never know.
Yup, the ground for the hour gauge switches via the oil pressure switch or ECM if you have one of those.

By using ground oil pressure to the clock, the clock is designed to measure the working hours of the engine.
You could also take an infrared reading of the engine temp and write that on the gauge to give you an idea of what your actually running temp is. I saw this and went on ebay and bought a digital meter with sensor for $16.00!!! Great inspiration you gave me. Yep that thar diesel is a big step in power !!! I have a Cat 257 tracked . What a hoot! Thanks!

I have a tip for beginner operators, when digging holes lift the lift arm a little then tilt the bucket making all wheels or all of the tracks are in contact with the ground ! I see so many newbies tilt the buck and lift the front wheels of the ground then try to push, it's all about traction !

Andrew your fix on the hour meter will work fine but what was happening on the wiring was the hour meter has power all the time, it actually receives ground when the machine has hydraulic pressure hence engine is running. I know this because on my 743B my meter quit working and I did all the things you checked and didn't understand. Then I checked the wiring schematic and found the "ground" wire went to a hydraulic switch on top of the pump and when the pump was working hydraulic pressure then grounded the hour meter. My wire had broke at an electrical junction, I rewired around the connection and now my meter works fine off the hydraulic pressure, not exactly engine running, thats why the key didn't affect the hour meter. I would guess this is how most Bobcat hour meters are wired. FYI

Andrew - I'm thinking you should check the thermostat also. I would also get rid of the 'idiot light' for your oil pressure and put a real oil pressure gauge in.

I was going to suggest the same.
For what it’s worth, I’d see the skid steer, too. It’s reaching the point where the costs are outweighing the advantages. That you got this far with the Bobcat is testament to your ingenuity and mechanical skills. I’ve known a few Bobcat owners during the Ingersoll-Rand regime and all are united in saying that the older the machine got, the less reliable it became, almost exponentially. Everyone of them ditched their Bobcats in favor of other brands.

Andrew has a lot of good points in which he talks about computer controlled machines. I have overridden automated machines with simple relays before bypassing the computer inputs. It would be a great idea if a company was built around making machines as simple and mechanical as possible. You have to ask yourself what advantages are we getting for all these electronics? I mean diesel engines were getting great mileage 30 years ago. Maybe 18 20 mpg. Now with all these emissions and electronics their efficiencies are shrinking. A $70,000 Truck why? Even if you have company making a couple million a year it's bad investment. At the same time if your truck was stripped down to the frame it would look the same as a Truck made 30 years ago with more or less steel. So they ad new shaped pieces of sheet metal every couple of years and a new price with a bunch of electronics that you'll never utilize. It would be cool if a company would say offer a rebuilt trucks from the 90's like F250's or F350's with a Powerstroke engines. Totally rebuild them from the ground up with all upgrades. It would be like buying a F250 in the nineties when it came off the lot. Then sell them for like 60% of the price of a new one. I think that is what Contractors are looking for a diesel with very few electronics.

Being an hour meter I would expect it would only have power when the engine is running because that's what it does it's record the operating hours. Maybe if you put your test probe in one of those leads with the engine running you would find it had power. I don't think the hour meter should be powered constantly. Just my guess.

The digital hour meter in my yanmar has been working for 1000hours and 3 years now, and it gets wet. All the mechanical ones I bought broke instantly.

The temperature gauge should generally show the same temperature no matter what the outside conditions are. I wonder if your thermostat is bad or like you said bad temperature sender. The temperature on that gauge looked way too low.

If your thermostat is operating correctly the temperature gauge should be in the normal green range...even if it is - 30f.

That's the logical way of wiring an hourmeter, so that it registers only when the engine is running, but from the manufacturers' viewpoint, they want every second to count, so they wire them from a key-on perspective.
Yeah, that seems more reasonable, you can see the hours when you turn the key at all and from a wiring standpoint it seems a lot easier, especially in a vehicle with no computer

It's maybe simply wired key on engine off to allow the guy checking it to avoid it to start the engine of each machine.
Those things are more often serviced by an other person than the operator.
The purpose of an hour meter is to be checked regularly,that mean a guy do it specialy,and dont need the engine to run at this precise moment.

A dozer and skid steer are pretty different machines. Dozers can just really flatten stuff. Where skid steers can do tons of different things. As far as buying them. I guess just try to make sure it works properly and isn't leaking.

The problem can be also if the new gauge you interchange in place with the old existing gauge ohm tolerance range is different ,if so it will not function properly . The temperature gauge and the temperature sending unit ohms has to match tolerance .I had the same issue with my Bobcat 753 machine using the same exact gauges he used in this video and wasn't get an accurate reading. After troubleshooting and conformation from my local dealership I had to use the original exact temperature gauge that came in the machine from factory .
Hey. Seems like the oil pressure light doesnt work too. And the engine has to be running to get the negative signal. Sometimes there are 2 sensors. One for the hourmeter and one for the oil light. Other machines got a relay to eliminate the second switch. As you need both a normally closed for the light a normally open for hours

A simple technique I use to reduce or eliminate vibration damage to wire ends is to wrap them around a Phillips screwdriver and then you can stretch it if you need to. (We mostly use Allen head or hex head screws and drivers in Canada) but I think US folks use Phillips.
If you want to correct the number on the hour gauge you could plug it into a power supply and leave it running for a certain amount of time
The person that buys this Bobcat when you sell it, is going to want an accurate reading on the hour meter. Making a note of when it was replaced with a picture of old gauge would be helpful.

Actually the hour meter works off the hydraulic pump pressure, which only works of course when the engine is running. I have a 743B and found that out when my meter quit working. The hour meter is hot all the time with key on, and when the machine has hydraulic pressure the hour meter is then grounded and works. I followed the wiring schematic and found the wire from the pressure switch had broke at the electrical plug in the wiring.

You should make your own mulch and sell it from all the burned material and small brush. You could even buy a chipper attachment with a hitch and chip it. I used to have a buddy in the tree service that would dump his wood chips on my property and I would turn it over from time to time, within a year it was stable and really dark. I then sold it to my customers.

When you own your own company with as many machines as Andrew has, there is little time for rest, unless you’re figuring to go out of business. Machines break, and when you buy them used, in many cases you’re buying someone else’s headache.

In the day I had two BOBCAT S-130 pedals 773-G hand controls both great machine but the S-130 turn on a dime. Super great little machine. I think maybe with the right tires and bucket . You may have got in that basement / house job your working on right now maybe not....I used that machine S-130 with the right bucket and tires to get inside a summer cottage dig out the dirt floor to put stone down SAVE MY BACK......A another great machine is the S-100 which bobcat only made for few year in 2007-2011 another great machine for small areas like basement work or inside demo work take care JUNKMANDO

The after market temperature gauge may not have a wire going from the threaded port to the gauge. It very well could be a flexible tube filled with inert gas. As the engine heats, the gas expands, moving the needle. Otto

At 2;20 you said one of the wires goes to the temperature guage itself. Did you mean it goes to the temperature sensor itself?
Put the hour gauge in the engine area. It will stay dryer and dry out when the engine gets warm. Always moisture getting into things.

My guess is at 8:14 the yellow wire is the signal wire for when the engine is running. That's what you are counting the hours on, right? Seems you may have configured the timer for "key on" hours. Just a guess and glad Sadie (?) was keeping an eye on you incase you succumbed to the elements. I noticed that you never bitch about the cold in your videos.

Great video but I have a question for my 743 it has a new temperature gauge and a new sender but the gauge was always on hot even when the engine is cold so I fixed it to go back to cold but now it doesn’t move at all. Now the arrow only stays before the green?
how did you fix it? make sure the wire is not broken or grounded out from the gauge to the sensor. Make sure the gauge gets power/ground.
Andrew Camarata i did use a power probe tester to see if there is power from the purple wire to the gauge and there is I believe in doing it correctly. And the way I fixed the gauge goin all the way to hot is I saw that the metal bracket that secures the gauge to the panel was shorting the positive and purple wire or vise versa.

It's either running or it isn't. If the ground is switched off, the hot lead won't do any good as no current can flow.

That was a 1990 Bobcat 742.
It seems as if the temperature gauge should have gone up further than that. You might want to check to see if you have a bad thermostat in your cooling system. If the thermostat is stuck wide open, the machine won't get up to a proper operating temperature.
