As someone who has a border collie-whippet mix I can definitely confirm they need a ton of exercise. Mine's dumber than a brick, though.
Edit: she wasn't originally trained by me as she's a rescue, but whoever trained her initially didn't do a great job lol

That's interesting you say that , I'm sure my girl is whippy mixed, (was told short haired border collie) she is very smart and almost S&R ready; but she *can* run all day or alternatively spend the whole weekend in bed while I'm hungover, and I associated that with the whippet in her, you got me thinking maybe there's no whippet in her 😂

Most pet lines are. A DNA study found that working lines are as different genetically from all other lines as two completely separate breeds! Get yourself a working line to get the true border collie experience!! But then you'd also be signing yourself up for dog sports 24/7 indefinitely 😅

I had 3 border collies. May they RIP. Lovely dogs. They loved long walks but not more than other breeds. Maybe because they played a lot together. They were watchful but never aggressive. They shared the house with 37 cats. They never had problems with cats and got on with them from the first day they arrived home. The perfect dog breed.

My dad got me a border collie when I was little, she was the greatest dog I’ve ever had. She lived to be 21, I believe, before we had to euthanize her due to her bad health and not wanting to put her through any pain. But even when she went blind and mostly deaf she still recognized us and was always so happy to see us even if she couldn’t get the strength to sit up and put one of her paws on us. I’m glad I got to grow up with a border collie and my pet. She was an amazing companion for me as I was raised like an only child since my siblings came from different mothers and lived with them. I am definitely considering getting another border collie later in my life!

I had one. She died when she was about 21 yrs old, and from illness, not from old age. I used to call her " my fitness instructor". Like a lot of owners say, you need to make time for them to give them the possibility to exercise all that energy. Even with a decent size yard, you still need to give them attention and exercise. It also helps to have other animals around, like cats or other dogs, they are really friendly with other animals.

  • @I.Love.My.Border.Collie

I've had 2 BCs and would never have another breed because of their intelligence and loyalty. They are 100 percent pure love and joy. But they are full of energy. Mine were both happy and balanced due to treating them like family. They had their chores, etc... Helping with laundry. 😉 Shepherding my son. Waking the family up for school and work. A regular schedule helped tremendously so they knew what to expect. They knew when both play time and exercise time was. I wouldn't recommend one as a pet unless you had other pets and plenty of space or you worked from home. They get too lonely and bored. Now there are new toys that stimulate and teach pets which is great. I ❤ BCs.

I’m staying with someone who has a border collie, and she’s just so sweet. She’s picked her favorite person, and just follows her around everywhere. When she goes to the bedroom, the collie thinks it’s time for bed and follows her in there. She gets a little mad when it isn’t bedtime, after a while she comes back out to the living room and plops back down next to her again.
She’s great at recognizing words, we can’t say squirrel around her otherwise she picks up on it and goes to look outside for it.

Border Collies are by far my favorite breed. I've had multiple in my life, and they are amazing dogs. Yes, they are very intelligent and curious, which is fun to watch. But my favorite thing is that they're extremely loyal to their owner/family, and they're very loving dogs to their people. Sometimes they're more nervous around people they don't know, but they warm up quickly as long as they've been raised/treated properly. And they're not really lap dogs, but they love to stick near their human(s) and love having a paw, their nose, etc on their person a lot of the time. And again, they are very loyal to their humans. I love them so much. Definitely my favorite breed around.

I have a border collie about a year and a half years old. So well trained and almost perfect behaviour not destructive at all. The best thing about these dogs is how smart they are it makes being a dog owner so much easier although you have to understand your dogs needs and requirements of exercise/ stimulation. These dogs are also companions you need to commit time to them it’s a lifestyle decision. Doing all this your dog will show the same effort and love back to you.

My dad brought a dog home 2 years ago, it was given to him by his boss. It was a crossbreed between a border collie and a dachshund. I was mostly the one who took care of him so initially expected him to grow up being a complete mix of his parents since he was so small when he was given to us but he grew up more into a collie along with his personality and intelligence. I barely trained him and let him do his own thing but whenever I talk to him he knows exactly what I meant. I didn’t even train him much on walking outside without a leash but after trying to train him on that for like a week he already got used to commands and hand signals. I mean our pit bulls and labradors are also smart and were quite trainable but it was not as easy as with our collie.

I have a border Collie (currently almost 8 months) and she's definitely energic. We started taking her to dog parks which totally wipes her out! My older sister trains her and she's pretty good at it. We also plan to take her to like agility school (idk how it's called) we also have a Scottish fold cat which she herds, my cat def doesn't like it LOL

Yes, dogs that need alot of physical and mental exercise are for people who can provide time and space (no apartments) to join in on the fun (not for couch potatoes or seniors)😊

It’s crazy to think how in terms of dog intelligence, border collies and poodles rank the top…but their personalities could not be more different…poodles need a lot of stimulation too but this is soooo intense, it’s on another level!

My boyfriend has one of these dogs and he is the most smartest animal I have ever seen!! He always wants to play and run.
He'll bring me his toy and I'll pretend to drop it and he picks it up and places it closer to me so that it's "easier" for me to pick up. HES JUST SO SMART!!!
