I'm really fascinated how their entire body language changes depending on which animals they work with. Makes sense since trying to push around one full grown cow is one a whole different level than guiding a herd of shep
True, but I didn't think cows as very unruly or in need of herding. In Norway, and from my limited experience, we usually just shout at the cows to come home and then they come automatically... especially if it's cold or rainy outside. :)
I love Brody's look over his shoulder at the end like, "Dad, she's moving. Should I follow?!" Also the cow with the slow foot drag, like she's trying to get in his head.
Border collies and cattle dogs are the smartest dogs on earth. I have a blue jerker and he is smarter than a lot of people and herds people as well as he can herd animals .
We have a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd and he herds us and the other pets. It's a trip having the backs of your legs nudged all through the house! 😄
@@janitraprimasanti2648 usually they are naturally working dogs so yes , but, so E just never mind if you don’t train them early and often. You want the relaxed but alert and mindful of both the herd and what’s happening around them and be willing to run off any potential danger which includes being able to control and monitor at least their end of the herd instinctively and som thing they enjoy and benefit from doing. Multiple dogs for every dozen sheep or cattle. with you while moving them say from one part of a field to another.
Our first border collie, Buddy, LOVED herding us. At that time I ran a daycare, the poor fella was _exhausted_ at the end of the day! Keeping 10 kids together in the yard was his 'best thing' ever! Lol 😅
My bc we're never put on leashes, they learned their first trick, sit in less than one minute. The first one took two commands and had it down pat. The second one had watched the first one and did it first try. In one week they learned all the indoor tricks. When I let them outside they walked the perimeter of my land with me each morning. After the first week I let them walk it in the mornings by themselves and I walked it with them in the evening. The cleared the animals that weren't allowed on my property, kept the critters off and brought in the cattle, horses, goats, pigs, chickens, and would keep a loose rabbit in a small circle if I had to do something. One morning I came home from work and found a large white rabbit between them played out. I thought one of my does had gotten out. It was not mine. No one in the farming area claimed it. I eventually found a home for it. Those girls were smart. Deer, foxes, skunks, armadillo, racoons, rabbit, nothing was allowed on the property we walked. They could walk right by the property, but step on the grass and it was on. I miss those girls. No longer on the farm, but I miss them.
that dog is so brave!! i love seeing herding dogs in action. just imagine being bred and trained for one specific purpose, and loving every second of it!
@kalenmcdavid8903 sure their not big but they are far more agile and intelligent than any dog you can name. Intelligence goes a long way I had my working line collie at the dog park when a dominate cane Corso tryed to bite and pin her but she was to fast and intelligent she turned bit it’s chest and stared fearlessly into its eyes growling the corso submitted by licking its lips with its tail between its legs. To herd a cow, the dog must dominate the cow by its intelligence, intensity of purpose and "force of personality". The dog must bring the cow to believe that the dog means business, and there is no other choice. The point is that the Border Collie is the kind of critter that tends to be well able to do this. If the dog shows the slightest hesitancy or "self doubt", the game is up. I watched a small herd of cows turn and chase my dog. It was a Samoyed, and while she was a wonderful dog, she was not all up to the job of herding even 1 cow. It was funny!
I wish I could have seen my ex puppy work. She was 1/2 Aussie and 1/2 keeshound. She was the color of the Aussie with a little peach, but the keeshound coat. She had the Aussie instinct to herd, so I knew I had to find that special person. I heard from a friend a few years later that she went on to win herding awards.
