In the context of the Lemonade album, this song is the turning point where Beyoncé begins her introspection on her broken relationship with her husband to find a way forward, and it starts with her reflecting on her relationship with her father. Some context, Bey was managed by her father from the start of her career with DC through the Single Ladies era, over 13 years and they are extremely close. Beyoncé has been quoted to say she gets her business acumen from father. She also has been quoted that she removed her father from her management in order to save their relationship. As another commenter mentioned, Mathew, her father, cheated on her mother and this is a “curse” that she seeks to repair as infidelity is common within her family line.
With that in mind, the lyrics in Daddy’s Lessons is alluding to ideas she has about her father, her husband and herself that we’ve seen reflected in her other music. For example, she has song called “Daddy” from her first solo album where she sings “I want my unborn son to be like my daddy/I want my husband to be like my daddy/there is no one else like my daddy.” She also has a song with DC called “Soldier” where she singing about wanting a “soldier” - someone from the streets who grinds and sticks up for her. With Beyoncé desiring a partner who is a soldier and like her father, and in DL singing about her father making her into a soldier and warning against men like him, Beyoncé paints a picture of the complexity of her relationships with both her father and husband. She is reminiscing about the good times (motorcycles, classic vinyls) and lessons he taught her about being tough and protecting herself…against men who seek to play or betray her. And with her father, one of the biggest betrayals is the image she had of who her father was and aspiring to that image. It can also be interpreted that death of her father in DL is death of that image (“…right before he died he said remember…”). But despite the betrayal of her father, Beyoncé is able to have a loving relationship with her father because of the good memories and lessons he taught her and mostly because she changed their relationship dynamic when Mathew left her management team. And with that example of loving someone through a betrayal Beyoncé chooses to seek a path of change and aim the gun at the bigger issue - generational curses, broken relationships due to not loving oneself (explored in Jay-Z’s companion album 4:44), and moving forward in the face of obstacles, specifically the systemic ones that plague the Black community.
All in, Daddy’s Lessons is one of the best songs on the album and has so much meaning. Like Lemonade itself, if can be consumed on surface level but the depths it reaches is what makes it one of the best albums of all time and one of the best cultural moments of 21st century. I highly recommend you watch the visual album, as it is a masterpiece. The album can be listened to on its own and it’s amazing the ground Beyoncé was able to cover in that one album. If you want to hear something a little quicker, I would suggest listening to the two songs that bookend Daddy’s Lessons, “Six Inch” and “Love Draught” as I think it paints that transition art period well - noted the full picture of the album but three songs often not broken lyrically enough for me!

Wow, this is an incredible dive into Bey's relationship with her father and how that affected her relationship with her husband. I LOVE learning that there's so much depth here because I always assumed Bey was quite private about her personal life. And, this is another time that someone has mentioned to me that Bey uses transitions between her songs that make the albums as a whole more cohesive. Because of this, I think it might be better for me to do a reaction to the album in its entirety, rather than picking and choosing individual songs. I can't wait to keep learning about Bey! Thank you so much for the insight--I appreciate this so much!

@@AlexOnTheRecord The more hardcore fans will correct me, but I believe you're assessment of Bey is mostly correct, she is very private and most of her albums might touch on aspects of her life but still keep the audience at arm's length. The two exceptions, in my opinion, are her self-titled album and especially 'Lemonade'. Those two albums are very personal and I think truly help you understand her more. They were the one-two-punch turning points that helped me appreciate her more.

Her dad Mathew Knowles was the driving force behind her career in the in the early 90s - mid 2000s. Up until the single ladies era, he served as her manager. Then it came to light that he had fathered a child with a woman outside of his marriage to Beyonce’s mother, Tina, which lead to their divorce. Beyoncé explores this in her song “Ring Off”. After their professional split, Beyoncés music became more experimental and personal. Her celebrity persona was less concerned about being “perfect” and more so invested in herself as an artist that explored personal themes. Since then, it appears that Beyoncé has worked tremendously to rebuild her personal (not professional) relationship with her father while being honest about his past indiscretions. She makes the connection to her husband, Jay-Z, and her father in this song. Jay-Z acknowledges this in his music as well. Unofficially, Lemonade serves as the first album in the trilogy about their marriage. 444 by Jay-Z comes second, and their joint album (Everything is Love) is the finale.

She was asked to perform this at the CMA'S 50 Anniversary special, no doubt because they wanted the ratings...SIDENOTE : it was their most watched award show ever.
They wanted her to perform but she used her star power and girl power to get the Chicks to perform it with her and to get their award show ban lifted.
The CMA'S banned them from the show because they dared to speak out against, then president, George Bush jr.
The Chicks said they were listening to Beyonce's Lemonade album a lot while they were on tour, and I saw a phone recording of them covering the song on their tour.
Beyonce was always a DC fan and so they went into the studio to do a version of the song together before their CMA performance, so their version dropped to buy/Stream immediately after the finished.
The performance was absolutely amazing and it brought the house down.
The CMA'S got lots of toxic racist comments posted.
Instead of closing the comments section down and keeping the performance up, they did the opposite.
They should have shown support to the artists THEY invited and also released a statement saying they don't condone or tolerate that type of behavior on their platform.....crickets.
Natalie said they put it back up a few days later, but she had already spoke her mind about it on her social media.
She said she didn't care if they took it down. They got to sing with Beyonce on the CMA'S dime. Lol
    Please react to that performance?

    • @AlexOnTheRecord
      @AlexOnTheRecord  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I will definitely add this to my list! I knew about how everyone shamed The Chicks for speaking out against Bush, but I didn't know that they performed with Bey (or that Bey helped them get back onto the awards shows!). WILD that the CMAs didn't stand up for them and yielded to bigotry. Bey is a queen. The Chicks are queens. They deserved better. Thank you for the recommendation!

I didn't read the lyrics as literal in her case, but as her imagining a young woman growing up in that kind of environment, where women are taught to use firearms in places like Texas, where she's from. If you haven't already, see the CMA 2016 version she sings with the Dixie Chicks. It's electric.

Not to give you a very long context but the whole lemonade album is how she went about the journey of finding out jay z cheated on her and all the way to how they got back together. This song comes at a point in the album where shes comparing her husband cheating to her dad also cheating. So she's basically describing how there has been a cycle of cheating in her family and what black women go thru in general with this issue. She describes it briefly in her movie. Her rship with her dad is actually great i think now but he was her manager for very long but they parted ways in 2009 i think when she made her own management company but him cheating on her mom kinda severed their rship. But i recommend watching the lemonade film as it beautifully describes the journey
