    Gimbals are great, but they can be cumbersome and slow you down. In this short I show you how to streamline using a gimbal via quick release plates and alternative ways of carrying them.

    The gear I use to make my content (although this is always changing!)
    Sony A7iv + 20mm 1.8G - My main TH-cam camera for shooting out on location.
    Canon EOS R + 16mm F2.8 + Zhuyin Crane M3 - I use this for a combination of stills and video B-roll
    Sony A7iii - this is my primary stills camera that works with native Sony lenses and all my Canon EF lenses on the Sigma MC-11 adaptor
    Canon 5D3 - I use this camera when I use my EF glass and there is no benefit in adapting
    DJI Mavic Pro 2 - My first drone, and I can’t see me replacing it. It’s amazing for both stills and video
    Go Pro Hero 8 - for adverse weather conditions that my other cameras might not survive!
    Insta360 - X3 & One inch edition - for 360 degree video and BTS content
    Microphones - DJI Wireless Mic, Rode Wireless Go, Rode Lav Go, Rode Video Pro+, Rode Video Micro
    Photo Tripods - Sirui ST-124 with Sirui ballhead, Peak Design travel tripod

    Thanks for the AS plate tip. I refused to pay the ridiculous price for the Zhiyun replacement quick release plate that should have come with the gimbal.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree - the quick release shouldn’t be an extra - plus it still isn’t Arca Swiss compatible which defeats the point of it being quick release. What do you do with it once you have removed it from the gimbal? You would still have to put it away in a camera bag….

    How do you use portrait mode without it moving so much? I’m trying to record vertically but I can’t get it stable.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi, this gimbal does allow vertical shooting, however it is missing one axis of stabilisation as the camera is still mounted horizontally. You just have to be extra careful when shooting vertical video, but I have done it.

  • @stringwalker8312
    @stringwalker8312 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    How do you balance the gimbal with the mic on the camera. When I try to balance the roll the mic is in the way of the axis?

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a good question. Putting an actual microphone on the of the camera throws the balance way off, it becomes too heavy and I have not successfully balanced a camera properly with an actual microphone on top, even a Rode Video micro which is a small light microphone. Instead I use a wireless microphone (ride wireless go or DJI equivalent) and the receiver is very small and light and will allow you to balance the setup just fine.
      The gimbal will easily hold a mic on top, they don’t weight very much - you just can’t balance it properly. I hope this helps!

  • @eiraarie8

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi. I use a Canon RF 16mm f2.8 and a canon RF 50mm f1.8 on the Zhiyun crane M3. Both of those lenses are the same size and weight and therefore you don’t need to rebalance it when you switch them. This gives you a wide and a tighter shot both of them are pretty cheap!

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tess, I shot some vertical content with it recently, and it has a dedicated vertical mode however you have to hold the gimbal out horizontally (typically described as torchlight mode) and after a while it gets uncomfortable. If you shoot a lot of vertical content then I would find a gimbal that allows you to mount the camera in the gimbal vertically - this one might but I don’t have an l-bracket for my canon to try it out.

      Hi. I responded to the same question in the comments of the video. Pasted below again :-)
      Hello. The attachment that I am using doesn’t actually have a name as far I can see. It’s an accessory that comes with the Peak Design Everyday 35L bag and allows you to loop it around a handle and as the bottom is a clip to take the ‘tags’ from peak design that loop through your camera. Then I attached a mini tripod plate with another tag on it to the side of the gimbal (it has a 1/8th thread on the side of it) and that allows my to clip it to the strap. Does any of this make sense? If not send me an email or DM me and I will send you some photos. I am Ben Harvey Photography everywhere.

    just the video I was looking for, thank you! do you know if this gimbal works with a røde pro mic on top? I can't seem to find any reviews mentioning an external mic + a bigger lens (like the sigma 16)

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello. I use a ride video micro on too some times and it does unbalance it. Not because of the weight, simple because it is too heavy. It will take the weight of the ride pro but you may struggle to balance it and it will therefore put more strain on the motors and use my battery. Not sure which sigma 16mm lens you are referring to and if that is heavy?

    • @sureokae
      @sureokae 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@benharveyphotography thank you for clarifying that! the sigma 16mm is a great lens but it does add extra weight as it's about double the size of the kit one. probably best to use a smaller fluff mic if using that lens + a gimbal or just using a tripod & running it through catalyst :)

    WARNING : Crane M3S only provides stabilization for smartphones & action cameras. Button controls are not supported. I linked my iPhone13 pro max with Crane M3S and issues were :
    1. Struggles to connect via Bluetooth. Nightmare.
    2. OBJECT TRACKING IS NOT POSSIBLE.
    3. It’s only for Mirrorless/ types cameras.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is simply not true. I have a full frame camera on the Crane M3 in the video?!? The M3S supports more weight than the M3 that I am using, but I cant speak for the Bluetooth connectivity as its not a feature on the M3; I have to connect my camera via a cable, but that’s not a great workflow considering the quick release plate. So I simply press the record button on my camera.

      I haven’t used the Hohem so I cant really comment, and I personally wouldnt be using a gimbal of this size to stabilise an action camera. If you want a small stabilised camera then get the pocket 3! This gimbal is designed for small mirrorless cameras.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. The camera strap that I use is annoying not for sale individually, This came with the peak design camera back and simply has a ‘female’ peak design anchor attachment on loop that you can thread through any camera bag strap. The Zhiyun M3 has a thread on the side, so explore options of how you can use this to attach it to some sort of clip or system (but I personally wouldn’t put a tripod plate on this as it would be uncomfortable to hold. The Ulanzi quick release plate is linked in the video description. I hope that you find this helpful!

      Hi Alif, i just watched the short back to make sure i was answering your question correctly. The tripod on the bottom of the gimbal comes with it, that’s made by Zhiyun - But i think you are referring to the switchpod with looks a bit like a weapon made by batman, it is a folding mini tripod with magnetic legs that allow it to turn into a mini selfie stick for vlogging.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, I don’t have the 24-70 f2.8, but my advice is that the M3 is probably not the right tool. I would look for one of the ‘medium’ size gimbals that will allow a heavier payload and therefore the 24-70is not stressing out the motors. The M3 is also very small and carrying a heavy camera setup with be uncomfortable without a second handle or additional grip for long periods of time.

    • @benharveyphotography

      Hello, I just looked up the weight of those two combined and they come to circa 750g. The weight of my Canon and lens comes to 825g and it can handle it no problem. So yes, but you will need to calibrate it as it will be a front heavy set up (the lens weights more than the camera) and there it will sit a bit further back than my setup. I hope that this is helpful.
