    Most of my landings have been good except one flight into Sydney from Auckland. Blowing a gust and bucketing down with rain and thick fog. I remember descent, seeing flaps go to full and thinking we're still breaking through clouds and all of a sudden the runway appears, bang! Hit hard and full reverse heavy brakes. I remember thinking fuck too much wheel brake my eyes are going to pop out or were going to slide off and the antilock won't hold it.
    Then we stopped and I realised although I love planes and studied aircraft since I was a kid, pilots know better.
    Also, my mate flies A330s and he said its best practice to hit harder when wet to get the tires to spin up fast and not slide

    Nice landing, you can tell he's really flying that plane, he's working the ailerons alot to keep it level. It looks like there was alot of crosswind from the left.

    @fearfulAC130 - Spoiler retraction is part of a checklist known as 'After Landing Checklist', surprisingly. Nobody in the cockpit can do anything unless a checklist is called for by the Captain. It's not a case of doing something because it's time; it's not flight simulator! The only reason is 99% the captain was preoccupied with talking, thinking, pressing, advising, etc., that he hadn't called the checklist for the FO to go through. I'm probably right because flaps also delayed.

  • @FSXreality
    @FSXreality 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ollo1982 Whilst that's true, it's also the Captain who will taxi the aircraft, so in this case, on the ground, it will indeed be the Captain calling the checklist. I agree the FO does checklist calls (when he's PF) but not during taxi because that's always the captain. I was thinking taxi procedures when I wrote, rather than flying. But fair comment.

    I can't really remember the last time i landed hard, except in las vegas because of the heavy turbulence. this pilot did a very good landing , but he could retract the spoilers before he turns, it makes it easier to get up the preasure in the hydraulic system so the chance of leaking is smaller. I fly the Airbus A380 (mostly) and it's quite hard to make a smooth landing with it, the secret is to pitch up at low speed

    • @Patrick_OWheresmypants
      @Patrick_OWheresmypants 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can remember the last time I landed hard, it was on a UNITED 757-200 from Washington Dulles (hope I spelled that right) to SeaTac. The pilot damn near ran the plane straight into the Tarmac, and did not use the reverse thrusters but instead thought it was a good idea to slam on the brakes. If know anything about the Seattle/Tacoma area, you'll know it rains for 10 months out of 12. That caused the plane to skid across the Tarmac.

    • @danne6a
      @danne6a 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dylan Tyerman Damn, i know what you mean of non visible landing. On a flight from Tokyo to Dubai there was a heavy sand storm in Dubai, i knew that a sandstorm is tough flying into but on my briefing they said nothing that it was going to be that large. So when we started our inflight to Dubai you couldn't see the ground and the ATC warned us of heavy storm, my co-pilot decided that it wouldn't hurt (td didn't ofc) but we continued the inflight, boy was it a mistake. When we were about 2000 M over the ground, you could hear the sant scraping into the windows on the front (It was turbulence too) anyways, when we touched the runway and hit reverse thrust 100% spoiler 100 % Flaps and i got a warning light on the Instument Board that the ABS were out, i knew there was going to be problem. So i was forced to lock the brakes and continue, the landning went good and the taxi too (i had a following vehicle to guide through the storm), so that was that history. Later that week i was informed that i had ripped up one tire on the left wing and that they had to repaind a bit on the front, but it was still a sucess for me, i got a lost of money too for my courage, about 43% added to my salery :)

      @Patrick_OWheresmypants 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Aviation
      I can honestly say I've never flown into sand storm that bad, I've only flown into one thing that could be considered a "sand storm", it was just a cloud of dust and sand that was caused by other planes taking off when I was flying out of Cabo in a Alaska MD-80. Not quite as exciting as your sandstorm experience.

    • @VivaLaEmil1
      @VivaLaEmil1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dylan Tyerman The reason they slam on the brakes these days, is because reverse thrust is waste of fuel since it's cheaper to replace the brakes. It also has to do with noise.

      Huh, I did not know that. I thought the plane was so old that it had no thrusters. The TV screens in the 757 I flew on looked like my old Apple 2 computer monitor.

    It's a damn shame LH doesn't fly to SJO. A twice weekly A343 nonstop between FRA and SJO would be ideal for me to visit my family. Currently, the only really viable connection is with KLM via AMS and PTY, then with Copa to SJO. Iberia nonstop to SJO is no option because of the bad rep they're supposed to have and because there's no flight between my hometown HAM and MAD. Only Condor flies there out of Germany via Santo Domingo right now, but I wish to avoid an aeroplane full of tourists.

    • @mrmourabr
      @mrmourabr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +flying98 ILS landing yes, but no auto landing. Auto landing isn't capable of to make a smooth landing like this. The automatic landing is a dry thud. The landing is neither hard nor soft. This pilot is very good and the runway is long enough to allow adjust the landing that way he did.

      @SkyWide6 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    @pascalmpower7944 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks like he applied spoilers before touch down.

    • @movieman162
      @movieman162 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NISMO N ATTACK 東瀛戰神 R34 Z TUNE The spoilers will deploy the second that the landing gear makes contact with the runway. Because the A340's gear is at an angle, the spoilers will deploy on the contact of the rear set of wheels however you wont feel the "bump" or hear much noise until the landing gear flattens out. If you want to see what I mean with the angle google image search for a340 landing gear.

    • @pascalmpower7944
      @pascalmpower7944 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      movieman162 Thank you sir, so it's automatic? I thought it's manual. Actually, you can feel the bump, I can feel two bumps in a 777 with a much longer rear set. I actually felt 4 bumps in an A330 years ago, during cross wind.

    • @movieman162
      @movieman162 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah spoilers have three settings, either off, flight detent (manual), or armed (automatic). When they are armed they will deploy as soon as the wheels touch the runway. So in the cases of some really smooth landings there can be a gap between contact and the aircraft "settling down" but for the most part you can feel it. There are some cases where they can be manually deployed in bad weather conditions where the crew want to make sure they are able to commit to the landing before they deploy the spoilers but for 99% of landings its completely automatic.

    • @pascalmpower7944
      @pascalmpower7944 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      movieman162 Ah thanks sir. Have a question for you, will pilots use spoilers to stabilize the plane while taxing through horizontal spread of windeshear before reaching V1?

    • @movieman162
      @movieman162 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, the spoilers would just produce too much drag meaning the aircraft would never takeoff unless it was a really long runway and even then it would struggle to climb. What pilots will do is use ailerons in the direction of the wind-shear, and then compensate for the turning moment created by using the rudder. A good example of this is a video on here called "crazy dangerous takeoff 767 in severe storm". You can see see that the ailerons are up in a similar configuration to the spoilers being up, however we can tell that the spoilers have not been deployed because the inboard aileron is also up (this only moves with movement of the yoke, not the spoilers). Ailerons stay up for the takeoff roll on the left wing (they will be down on the right).
