Thanks for this video,as it is a passing of an era for many old ETR/Maintenance Centre/Elcar Workshops employees who maintained and overhauled the F,U,S,R AND L SETS over many decades. Farewell Old Girls gone but never will be forgotten.
Nicely documented Phil! Especially getting the empty movements before the parallel run (don't think too many people thought of that). Shame the Waratah got ahead of itself.
I was on the C3001 carriage when you were filming in at Liverpool. It was fun riding the S-sets while it lasted. Sad to see it retire but also glad it would be still be around for future events
Sad to see them go, they hold something significate for me as they were newer double decker trains here when I moved over to Sydney. Catching these trains holds a lot of memories
Great video. I was on F1 for the 3 generation tour on car C3426 and I was also on S28 and S56 for the farewell tour. I was on C3001 on S56 from Central to Hornsby to Olympic Park to Emu Plains. Then I went on T4013 on S28 for the rest of the tour and the 3 generation tour B24 stopped at Ashfield while S28, S56 and F1 caught up
Great coverage Phil. Such a sad day but also one for celebration, as they have been transporting millions of customers the last 47 years. They without a doubt deserve a well-earned rest. :-)
glad to have the chance to ride the S set and have a picture of it when we visited my sister in Sydney last year. btw... im also a train operator from the Philippines, LRTA line 2 to be exact.
It was nice getting to see you at Central briefly, but I was annoyed I couldn’t attend this. Weekly grocery shopping sucks but it had to be done, as my mother wanted those new Little Shop minis at Coles.
Same. V Sets are such a classic, and are the only trains on my local line. Hope I can attend the farewell of the V Sets as I wasn't able to attend the S Set farewell. :)
I’m quite young but I still loved seeing these trains, they were my favourite having no air conditioning and open windows and I remember when I was really young getting scared when I went through a tunnel especially on the city circle to town hall
I was hoping that they would restore one of the driving trailers so that in the future we could have a 2 car s set on preservation tours. A lot of poeple who watch this vlog will not remmeber or perhaps not have been around when the4se were a common feature of the rail networj when the timetable demanded a number of 2 car services.
Sad to see them go - grew up riding S-sets as a kid. Pity they don't seem to have any in the original spec - they used to be painted (either blue and white or red) and had proper opening windows. Part of the reason for the "sweat sets" issue is the stupid fold-in windows that don't open very far.
Sad to see the S sets go. I loved keeping the window open to hear the track sounds as the train caught up speed. You don't get to hear the track sounds on the newer trains. You can still hear it on the V sets if you stand near the doors.
You would of seen me bolting down the stairs in a blue shirt at Liverpool. Just before the doors closed. They didn't give us much time to get everyone back onboard. I was a SETS Volunteer for the day.
Why did Sydney get soo many Waratahs? Tbh, it gets a little boring since majority of the Sydney Trains network are just Waratahs... It’d be exciting seeing the New Intercity Fleet since they have a different design to a Waratah. But it will be sad to see the V Set go...
So glad to see some S set trains even though they are now scrapped!!! Also noticed that a sad death 💀 occurred with S28 as it hit a PIGEON???!!! Well, that’s nature I guess!!! Even though I wish I hadn’t of seen it, feathers 🪶 everywhere and bones 🦴 cracking noises 🤢🤮!!! That will haunt me now 😂😂😂❤❤❤😢😢😢!!! I appreciate the vids and sorry I have posted this comment late!!! Anyway, you enjoy your train filming! I won’t keep you waiting forever ♾ 😂😂😂😅😅😅!!!
Sad to see these go. I remember when these were first introduced and we thought they were just amazing. The lack of air conditioning wasn’t an issue because were were so used to sweating it out (or freezing our butts) on the red rattlers. Missed them all. So many memories. Thanks for the video Phil. BTW is it possible to get a video of riding on any of the trains you’ve recorded? After all, the experience of being a passenger is a big part of our love of trains. Thanks for considering.
The same fate is happening to the EMU trains in Queensland, phased out as the New Generation Rollingstock rollout continues. Thankfully EMU 01 will be taken to the workshops rail museum located in Ipswich afaik. Also sad as those were the trains i grew up with
I'd reccommend any station between Strathfield and Central, as there is a very large variety of trains, both Subuirban, Intercity and Regional. Hope this helps. :)
Michael Tunbridge The Main Suburban line, which is the corridor between Central and Strathfield. Redfern is usually a busy station but gets a lot of variety. If you like a station on that line where you get to see trains run through very fast, Petersham has a footbridge you can view from. Summer Hill and Macdonaldtown also are great for trainspotting.
Thank you the information. Hope to get to see Sydney never been there in my life so I was just wanting some ideas on the good train lines and maybe do some train spotting I am from Bunbury South west of Perth Western Australia so hope to see the country that I yet to see
dean r the k set is almost identical to the s set in regards to motor units (first series, second series etc) but they upgraded from an APSU inverter to a motor alternator to power the air con etc. Worst thing is by doing this made it so much heavier but they still kept the same braking system (harder to stop) The C set is identical as well but the difference is this is when they started to put in systems to try and recognise faults through out the train (hybrid of the tangaras train management system) and they also introduced the “chopper motors”
Sunny Yan It’s because Sydenham is getting a concourse upgrade, with a second concourse to help with accessibility as part of its upgrade as a Metro and heavy rail interchange in five years’ time.
Don’t forget to subscribe if you haven’t already.
Cheers everyone 😊
Sydney Trains Vlogs, I’ve subbed

Hey Phil at 6:05 pay close attention a bird got pancaked

Thanks Phil for filming this.End of an Era for the beloved S Sets 😢
Was on the s set this morning, was a great send off
Great video and great coverage. Will be interesting to see which other cars are preserved.
Oh and LOL @ 11:14

Cheers mate, they were/are a great train :)
They do indeed need a rest but at least we will same them at special occasions
James Boi That’s exactly right! :-)

glad to have the chance to ride the S set and have a picture of it when we visited my sister in Sydney last year.

They look indeed ready for the scrapyard. Nice video.
I saw S28 at Strathfield today while I was on my way to Epping to have my first experience with Sydney Metro
Great video! I loved it.
It’s cool because it looks as if they cleaned and washed the train... What a lovely thing to do to send off the train... 😖
I’m going to miss this train because I always liked it’s shape and colour. But we’ve still got the V sets and those are similar.
Hat 1607 Not to mention K Sets and C Sets, which also have the similar corrugated silver appearance.
Comeng S set cars and V sets look more similar while the Goninan cars are more pre-K and C set like in comparison.
Great video Phil, sad to see them go better it was the right time
I was on both of these tours and the afternoon tour left central at 12:30 and finished at Strathfield a bit after 6:00 that night
It was nice getting to see you at Central briefly, but I was annoyed I couldn’t attend this. Weekly grocery shopping sucks but it had to be done, as my mother wanted those new Little Shop minis at Coles.
A day we didn't look forward to, it'll be worse to say farewell to V sets.
Same. V Sets are such a classic, and are the only trains on my local line. Hope I can attend the farewell of the V Sets as I wasn't able to attend the S Set farewell. :)
older trains are more decorative.
Not to mention that the first V sets entered service two years earlier than the S sets started.
@@TransportBuff I didn't know you lived in the Blue Mountains!
I don't catch V set trains much, but I find V sets so much better then H sets.

Excellent video...many thanks for the upload.
I see that F1 is now back to its usual four cars!
The last train I rode back to the airport before travelling back to Canada was an S Set... Glad I had a chance to experience it...

I think I saw you at Epping- I was at the end of platforms 1 and 2
Good to see F1 is back to 4 cars
dean r Yeah. It felt weird seeing three, as one of those cars had asbestos and had to be repaired.
I love trains so its pretty sad to see a train stop been in use

Adzy_Est _2001 same, I remember when I rode it almost every day
BlackRafGTR 23 yes me too
I’m gonna miss the S Set... Rip. 🥺😭
At 2:20, what kind of train was that? it was just a single decker, reddish colour, i know its old, but was it empty?

top vid really liked it especially the red rattler bit Is there more red rattler vid available? Cheers

Omg poor bird... I’m guessing that’s the last thing that train was gonna kill (if it did kill)...

Waratahisation for Sydney has taken over the Silver Rattlers
Screechlo good riddance
I saw S56/S28 and F1 at Blacktown Station around 11:33am and I was unable to film it
I was on F1
nice
but the real question is did anyone pop the back
6:04 NOOOO PIGEON
What is the best train line to do train spotting I have never been to Sydney any ideas?

How many platforms does it have in Central are they all thought trains or do they have some Terminates at Central
RIP S sets
Nice i was there!
Rip s sets 1972 2019 ps 1972 also marked the Main Street eltrical parade at Disneyland premiere
11:15
Oops what happened there?
Are the C and K sets almost the same trains as the S sets?
dean r k sets are like s sets but a little bit different in design and they have air conditioning and c sets are a prototype of the tangaras
dean r the k set is almost identical to the s set in regards to motor units (first series, second series etc) but they upgraded from an APSU inverter to a motor alternator to power the air con etc. Worst thing is by doing this made it so much heavier but they still kept the same braking system (harder to stop)

Hey Phil the S Sets are good
What’s a Special ticket just askin

Hey Phil ive never actually been on an S set is there any chance I can still get to see or get a ride? I know it's a little late hahaha
Impossible now all the s sets are bound for the scrap yard

Jonathan Ng The sets seen in this video, S28 and S56 will be preserved for future use at heritage events.
6:00 I think the train hit a bird.
Police 420 it did
You could see it continue to flutter off to the side, so the poor thing was probably in shock but not killed.
I think M set died it got out of engine
Hi Phil
So glad the sweat sets are gone
Sad day for the S sets :(
F to pay respects
11:14, oh&s would be alarmed.
