When I was a kid, we were about 500 metres from the line and we'd hear 'em chuggin' past and smell that great smell of burning coal and see 'em too. We'd catch the 3801 steam locomotive train home from school every arvo. Ah! The 1960s, a great time to be young and alive, choot choot choot, woo woo.
Given that NO steam engine has officially recorded 100mph / 160kph in Australia you won't see many recorded speeds such as the Pommies have done and posted with the famous Mallard at over 125mph. I doubt the latest renovation and associated costs would see her busting her guts these days. She used to hit over 80mph on some of the longer stretches of the Newcastle Flyer and I'd imagine the Riverina Express would go close with its' long stretches. The Victorians recorded the beautiful original Spirit of Progress train hauled by their streamlined locos S301-304 when it first did the run to Albury on the broad gauge. It was clocked at just on 80mph. More important was 3801's time for the Newccastle Flyer run where she set a steam record of just over two hours back in 1964 with a highly specialised track clearance. Her run broke the previous record set by an allegedly normal service hauled by a 36 class by nine minutes. One of the main reasons there are few claims is probably related to there being a 70mph limit in NSW.

The first thing I noticed is how sharp her exhaust beats are. She looks good too!
That’s actually one of things that this class is known for
Beautiful work, thank you so much for capturing and sharing.
GOOD TO SEE THE OLD GIRL BACK AT IT.😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Nice videography! Thanks for posting.
That chuffing noise is amazing!
Absolutely magnificent 😃
Great memories of express runs Goulburn Sydney
What's the maximum speed of 3801?
161 km/h or 100 mph!!!!
Nothing beats the sounds and smells of a Steam Locomotive.
3801 with an Star Brass 5 Chime!
THNSW should organise a tour to Melbourne with 3801
Seen her in Sydney
Why? From the beat these sort of locos apparently roketting @ 130-140 km/hr but barely they are 60-70 km/hr.
The wizard of AUS
Yesssssssss🎉
Nice capture👌
What if they do 3801 and 5917

What's the Max speed 3801 can do now. Probably it abit more if it didn't have a diesel on the rear
Probably 110 mph, so around 170-180 kph

@@flamingfrancis i reckon if there wasn’t the limit, she could’ve possibly pushed 90mph
@@thatonec_set37303827 was officially recorded at 92 mph
Nice.
У нас с вами одинаковая конструкция гудка, и звук тоже. Спасибо!
so 40kph is "speed"??
Old wepone 💪
Muy lento, el Tornado (A1) en el reino unido alcanza las 100mph.
Ok, but that’s the uk where they don’t need big tractive efforts unlike us in AUS
