There are few songs that take me right back to my teens/the 90’s like this one does, I just absolutely love it. The Help album was also the first CD I ever bought. The Levellers also had a fab song on that album called Searchlights.
I thought when I first heard this that it was a Suede song, so I told my mum to listen to it. She did but then she came back to me with the original so I listened to it, and had to concede the original was better despite being a Suede fan. That's how thing were back then conceding points when you were in the wrong now not so much. Covers back then tended to add their own spin to the song,so could on some occasions sound better than the originals. In this case the original was darker in it's simplicity. Though both are bloody good dark in their sound.
@@passmovetheliverpoolfcpodc7065 It very much *was* his song - just as much as it was Wyatt's and maybe more depending how much you value the lyricism in it. (Most people would agree that it's pretty well-written I think.)
A tremendously ballsy song to cover. The original version by Robert Wyatt is one of the greatest vocal performances ever put on tape. I have to give Suede a lot of credit for the incredible songs that they cover and the high quality of those covers. You are never going to get this song to the deeply profound and poignant fragility that Wyatt did...but, kudos for doing as well as you have done. Their cover of Blondie's UNION CITY BLUE is outstanding
@@grahamboffey457 Wyatt version 1st released in Aug 1982. Costello first RELEASED a year later. However, I am sure EC recorded it earlier with the working lyrics. Wyatt's version was also reissued at a later date. No worries though. Wyatt version is definitive. EC/Attractions iikely the 1st put on tape. Cheers
That song belongs to my friend Elvis and his friend Chet. But that version is good. An anthem anti Maggie. Elvis Costello is the most talented artist since 1978, in all kind of muwic. The world will remember him, centuries ago...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@Dick Diver fun fact for you. Timmy Mallet actually worked in the ship building industry before finding fame as a moron on children's TV. He used his large inflatable mallet 'Pinky Ponky' to hammer in rivets on several ships during the building process. Unfortunately, all those ships sank...
this isn't shit, its really brilliant, in my opinion. regarding criticism of blur and oasis, oasis were truly as albarns teeshirt said, quoasis... nothing wrong with that, but not worth 1/10 of the hype... while blur were always rubbish in my opinion. but suede had something, they were special. again all in my opinion as a humble listener, we all are entitled to that much.

Por culpa das Opos 2010 aisleime do mundo e voume perder un concerto na Praza da Quintana que pode ser moi interesante: Diana Krall e Elvis Costello... Damn it !!!! En homenaxe a Mr.Costelo eiquí deixo unha versión que me gusta dun das miñas bandas favoritas: Suede.
I woke up 20 years later, in the Mouth Of An Alligator, it was too late, I knew my fate, then it Bit me in half, now I’m only half the man, I used to be, then I share the story with you, because that’s what I do, I’m a Genius……, Like you 😊you, meaning plural or whatever you call it
Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I respectfully disagree. Wyatt's voice sounds abit one dimensional compared with the 'bowie-like' nature and adaptability of Brett Anderson's voice. I realise that his voice isn't to all tastes, and to you it may sound like he's 'screeching' abit, but imo Brett Anderson has one of the most distinctive voices around - and boy can he belt it out when given the opportunity (referring to their most recent album 'The Blue Hour'). I won't say that Suede's version is better though you might think so from what I've said; but Suede did a great job with this song, and there are few singers I can think of who would have done a better job of covering it. That Suede are 'southerners' is irrelevent - who cares. They paid huge respect to this song, and Brett sang it like it was one he'd written himself. Great covers add something without diminishing the original. Suede did this with 'Shipbuilding'.
@@robtyman4281 Fuck did I say about southerners? Toffee nosed commies like Wyatt, that's another matter. How have I only noticed you after two years me cheruby old china?
@robtyman4281 Don't know why you wrote all that. I was slagging off Robert Wyatt. Trouble with Suede is it's a tad too gay, even if they weren't straight neither.
If you are listening from the mid-teens this song also a big fan, English does not know Elvis Costello and suede, the English still weak. Without knowing the weight of the lyrics, sang live, after being converted into sound rather than words as the lyrics by ear, sang looking for a sound not only in Japanese. Good morning in Japan, in English, Good Morning. Cases. Good morning, Ohio and Ohio, such ear copy the sound is similar. Do not will not convey my explanation because bad perhaps, disappointing at the same time does not.
Ugg, this version sounds like someone running their fingernails down a chalk board. Take the soft voice of Robert Wyatt or the smokey voice of Elvis Costello and replace it with this nasal whiny singing... ok got to turn this off now.
It’s fantastic that people still want to cover this song
I left school 1982 and some of my classmates went down there
And some are still there
Best cover of this song
I lost this version of shipbuilding fifteen years ago ,so good to hear once again Suede at their best
What a genius Brett Anderson is! This version send shivers down my spine, beautiful beyond words
Yes he would be a genius....if he'd actually written that song!
@@BuckblacketHe’s written enough himself (and co-written) to make him a genius to many people
@glenbaker8412 and none of them come close to this masterpiece from Elvis Costello and Clive Langer.
beautiful. It's so soulful, brett's voice is fantastic in this. wonderful.

Exactly the 2 tracks I take away from that album, plus Radiohead's Lucky.

Heard it for the first time when I got the Lost in TV DVD in my late teens. Takes me back there ever since. And, oh well, Brett;)
You got lost in your TV and DVD player too? That was one of my favourite trips man, drugs are amazing aren't they?

Raises Suede's opinion in my eyes. Nearly as good as Robert Wyatt. Big hat tip.
But does it raise your opinion of Suede?
Close but no cigar, no one has mentioned the Tasmins version which even Robert admits is the best.
Best version. Slightly ahead of Robert Wyatt. Both better than Elvis Costello though, and he wrote the thing.
Chet Baker’s trumpet on Elvis’ version is of course infinitely better than this odd-midi-synth-horn solo. But then, Chet Baker was Chet Baker.
Should I feel ashamed for not knowing who Chet Baker is?
Famous old school jazz trombonist
Robert Wyatt - laughable, but this ain't too bad.
