The shiny mineral that breaks off into sheets (because of its one perfect plane of cleavage) is called muscovite mica. You get another darker (or black) variant of mica called biotite. Nice videos Matt.
Could not agree with you more. Was recently looking for a South African overland / 4x4 travel series to watch... The first, and pretty much only suggestion/channel that came up was (Roam Overlanding). And as much as I've tried watching his videos, they are extremely painful to listen to. Its the photography that is the saving grace. But with u and Nicole it's so much more natural, and in my opinion the best South African Channel so far in this category. Im not a professional at either, but ur stuff comes naturally and raw... All the other channels are far too edited and dramatic. This is No BS, just simple trave, l film & , enjoy. Good luck mate. Keep well
Matt--your vids have me obsessed with South Africa. And can we all agree that Nicole is a legend?? She was a little miffed about not driving that technical piece lol
We've loved this series and it inspired us to take our big rig on this trail - reverse of your direction. Just finished (May 2023). Without your Gaia routes we would definitely been lost so extra thanks there! For those with taller rigs who might also want to drive this route, the water pump station was just tall enough for us at 3m high and 2m wide. It's a wonderful trail - highly recommended.
What did you drive? Please see my comment to Matt above and give guidance should you have any for me on the narrow sections with our rig. Much appreciated!
I have been really enjoying your overlanding considering the love I have for It. Tried to set up a you tube channel, bam I don't know what settings I did. Plus using a cell phone. Dang. I wish you long life and keep being a wonderful persons you guys are.
It would be interesting to find out what work needed to be done to your truck after your journey. You could do a short video on what repairs were needed.
Thanks Matt and Nicole for another great episode in an awesome series 👏🏻 Matt - sorry if i missed it, but what went wrong with your fridge/freezer combination on your Westcoast trip and what was the fix? Did you experience the same issue here again?
Love your Namakwa videos. I wonder if the washboard road vibrations caused your refrigerator to fail? If so, maybe some shock absorbing mounts would protect it from excessive vibration. Jess
Good video. I have two questions please: 1. Do I understand that it's 715km between fuel stops? There are no communities with fuel en route? 2. What % increase in fuel consumption compared to regular tarmac? Thanks
Correct. Jerry cans.... Anything between 10% to double, in some trucks it goes way down to 4 or even 2km/l. Our FJ45 Landcruiser with factory-fitted GM 4.1 engine couldn't do this trip, as we'd need hundreds of litres of extra fuel.
Matt, we are planning to do this trip soon. I need some guidance from you in terms of any very narrow sections that the Unimog would not get through... I know about the Pump station ito the height restriction. Now is there any other massive boulders on this route that you would think would be to narrow for my vehicle... width is around 2.2m vs your vehicle being 1.855m. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for the channel.
Great episode Matt, keep them coming. If you had the choice of changing to a auto transmission, would you? It definitely makes off road travel easier than those of us that run on manual's.
These fridges should be able to handle conditions like that. Let's put it this way: Think of all the electronics and mechanical parts in the Hilux. They are all exposed to the same vibrations and show no sign of failure. An off-road fridge should handle this abuse better in my opinion.
A German that lived there, measured the highest temperature ever in South Africa 🇿🇦, on his Stevenson apparatus. Upington is a cold front by comparison 😂
The more I watch your channel, the more I think you need to change the name. Not Matt Dubber. How about The Dubbers? Your wife is probably a better driver, better with the camera, and a hell of a lot easier on the eyes. Give credit where credit is due.
Every now and again one happens to stumble upon a quality channel like this one and be like - WOW, I’m really living under a rock. 🙌🏼
The shiny mineral that breaks off into sheets (because of its one perfect plane of cleavage) is called muscovite mica. You get another darker (or black) variant of mica called biotite. Nice videos Matt.
Must say Matt, your videos are really engrossing. Excellent cinematography, wonderful music and great storytelling. Well done to both of you!
Glad you like them!
Could not agree with you more.

So well done Matt and Nicole. Your production values are to a very high professional standard. I am enjoying these so much.
Thanks for this. Watching this from Netherlands, missing my country watching you prance around. I klapped some Biltong while watching this for vibe.
Enjoyed this one as well and looking forward to Part 5. The shiny, clear mineral is Mica (Mika).
Wow what an amazing country you live in thanks for sharing it with us. A lot different from Manchester in the uk 🇬🇧 its stunning 😍
Those random hills of different material in the desert are wild looking. Like a giant dumptruck just offloaded here and there.

Thank you for the adventure and wow that’s really nice countryside
Great cinematography, mate!

No repairs needed. Just took it in for a standard service. These vehicles are made for conditions like this.
Looking forward to next episode :-)
Beautiful trip, you guys do a superb job of editing
Matt / Nicole epic episode nice camera footage
Beautiful, great video
Thanks great series
Thanks Matt and Nicole for another great episode in an awesome series 👏🏻

I also want to know about the fridge.
Awesome vids, can't stop watching.. But how is it possible to drive those distances with out sunglasses 😎
You know the video is great when I gain weight every time you guys eat. LOL Awesome series once again.
Love your Namakwa videos. I wonder if the washboard road vibrations caused your refrigerator to fail? If so, maybe some shock absorbing mounts would protect it from excessive vibration. Jess
You should set up a meeting with the Outdoor Channel or the Sportsman Channel.
I feel you are a perfect fit.
Loved it
Is this not the second time you fridge gave in?
Awesome video what went wrong with the fridge ?

Great series Matt, looking forward to the next parts, it's on the list of trips to do. Can I ask what drone you use? And GoPro? Thanks
Great episode Matt, keep them coming. If you had the choice of changing to a auto transmission, would you? It definitely makes off road travel easier than those of us that run on manual's.
I think so! Especially in low range, I find myself having to change gears every few seconds and my left foot cramped up a few times!
Not the first time your fridge didn't work. Did you change the brand?
Hi Matt. Second trip where fridge stopped working. Is it fridge or road related (heavy corrugations etc) that kills it? Is it related?
These fridges should be able to handle conditions like that. Let's put it this way: Think of all the electronics and mechanical parts in the Hilux. They are all exposed to the same vibrations and show no sign of failure. An off-road fridge should handle this abuse better in my opinion.
So fridge then. Same thing happened both times? Or not related? But agreed they should be able to withstand the conditions.
A German that lived there, measured the highest temperature ever in South Africa 🇿🇦, on his Stevenson apparatus. Upington is a cold front by comparison 😂
Was this the second time your fridge quit service?
I would like to know what drone did you use to get that type of drone footage?
Have a separate tank, that is what 450 Miles ?
Hi. Are your rims 17 inch?
Look put for Leopard tracks Matt
Het jy jou after sitplek uit gehaal?
Yip!
Wheres Nicole
twice you had fridge problems ?? Get a ENGEL

Haha, fair enough!
