  • We visit the Nevada County Narrow Gauge railroad for their September 2023 Steam Up! Plenty of action awaits you in this video, with two operating steam locomotives among other historic rolling stock:
Nevada County Narrow Gauge #5, named "Tahoe" is an 1875 Baldwin 2-6-0, and the oldest operating narrow gauge locomotive in North America. It is a twin to the famous C&TL&F "Glenbrook" and both worked on the shores of Lake Tahoe in their early years.
Antelope and Western #1 was built by H.K. Porter in 1889, and worked for a brick company in Sacramento until WWII. Harold "Hal" Wilmunder saved the engine from scrap and operated it on his private A&W railroad. The locomotive is still owned by the Wilmunder family, and they continue to run it at the museum today. The beautiful three-chime whistle on the locomotive came off the S.S. Tahoe steamboat, and can be heard throughout this video.
Other engines seen in this video are former West Side and Cherry Valley railbus #97, West Side Lumber diesel #1, and Sunflower Ordinance Plant diesel #10. We also see Florence and Cripple Creek combine car #60, which will soon be restored. This car was brought to the museum from the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in 2022.
Railbus #97 took passengers from the museum to the woods platform, where A&W #1 departed for trips through the meadow. At this platform a local musician brought his trombone and keyboard and played some great tunes. Cab rides aboard NCNG #5 were also offered for a small fee. At the end of the meadow near the Northern Queen Inn, a motorcar was giving rides down a stretch of track. At the end of the day, #1 and #5 finished off with a spectacular doubleheaded trip straight up the 7% grade to the museum!!
Because the A&W #1 was facing the wrong way prior to the doubleheaded run, the crew had to turn it around. Normally rolling stock is turned on the museum's meadow loop, but the route was out of service due to a faulty switch at Hott Spur. The only other loop is at the Northern Queen Inn, which #1 had never run around before today due to the sharp curve. Watch the video to see the outcome!
I highly recommend a visit to this museum if you haven't done so yet. Special shoutout to the all-volunteer staff, whose hard work makes this possible!
