October 2024 Steam Up on the Nevada County Narrow Gauge
It's a chilly day in Nevada City, CA, as two narrow gauge steam locomotives are heating up for the last Steam Up of 2024 at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum! Join us as Antelope and Western #1 and NCNG #5 lead their excursions around the picturesque meadow beside Gold Run creek, making for some beautiful views as fall colors begin to show in the trees. Some exciting things featured in this video include cab rides on both engines, awesome stack talk and some wheel slipping on the slopes, both trains passing over the camera, and artistic trackside vantages filmed from angles never before seen on this channel! Down in the meadow, one could find motorcar rides, train robberies, a musician who played some awesome tunes, and a couple of food vendors, leaving no shortage of things to see and do. This day has been the largest and most successful event the museum has held yet, with over 500 guests signing in! We hope you get a chance to visit this wonderful museum in the future.

Great job on your video! Nice footage of the trains at their best. Lots of great angles and views not regularly seen.
That’s such a beautiful operation. I’d love to make it down there someday. I wonder if the home built locomotive is still around somewhere. It was surprising to see the pilot truck lift off the rails at 23:56
OMG Your right
The railroad is indeed located in a beautiful setting, especially this time of year. The meadow and woods have previously been the scene of weddings and other events too. I sure hope you get a chance to visit in the future! The homebuilt engine you reference, No. 13, was recently sold to a private individual by the museum. As for the pilot truck, the curve is extremely tight for a 3' gauge railroad. At one time in the past, there was a private 2' gauge operation here and when the previous owners decided to run 3' train, they simply widened the rails since their engine had a very short wheelbase. No. 5 is quite a bit longer than the former engine was. The museum would love to rebuild the track in the future, as funding and other factors allow. The operation is very safe though, especially since guard rails have been installed and adjustments to the curve were made specifically for No. 5. Thanks for commenting!
I wish to see these engines once again, even though I visited the NCNGRR museum 3 months ago. Great collection of clips
Thanks for your comment! It is always a thrill to see them in person, and I hope you come up again next year.
My boys and I were there. I hope they do another meet very soon
@ScottRuen Thank you for your comment! Glad you and your boys were able to go, it was a fun event. There are tentatively special plans in the works for next year... keep your eye out for news.
Excellent video- great quality. Nothing like seeing these locomotives in action! Thank you so much!

Well done! Great photography and history!!!👍🏻

When will steam return to Jamestown?
@GoldenStateTrains Unfortunately I'm unaware of when steam will be back at Jamestown. I think your best bet is to keep in contact with Railtown and check in with them now and then. I thought I heard they want to have Sierra 3 back up and running later in 2025, but that could change. Thanks for your comment.
a friend of mine and his friend were at the entire 3 days . they were besidse themselves .
@drewbarker8504 Yes, Tahoe is a very impressive machine. Oldest running narrow gauge engine in the country, and third oldest of any gauge in the US. The museum did a marvelous job of restoring her. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Another fantastic piece. Tahoe really does have an angry bark when she’s in the corner. What a gem.
@drewbarker8504 Agreed, gotta love that stack talk! Thanks for your comment.
@@thetraintracker no problem! We have to charity some of these touched-up pre-1900!black-painted and “modernized” gems whilst they’re still around. It’s a literally window into the past ❤
The Tahoe is a real gem, and they’ve done such a good job restoring it. (And such a good comparison to see what the Glenbrook would look like in “modernized” form-but still with her fancy domes.)
Hey guys! Typically I try to steer away from adding music to my content unless it is done in a tasteful way and/or the original audio has substantial background noise. In the case of the car barn tour in this video, I was unable to use the original audio to due numerous factors and I ended up having to add some music to this part. With that said, I hope you all enjoy and thanks for watching!
I first attended Knott's in 1960 as a 5 year old. I already loved anything train and the Knott's became a favorite. I am so happy they still have the railroad in the park. In my youth I was an engineer on the Carowinds theme park railroad. Also a 3ft train with two steam locos, one of which runs in CA after Carowinds removed the railroad. My dream for Knott's is to extend the track across Western Ave (close or tunnel like Disney did) This would give the train a much better run. But doubt anything will happen.....be happy it's still there. Thx
@davevan8864 Thank you for sharing your story! Yes, it is wonderful they not only continue to operate the railroad, but preserve and maintain the equipment in a historically accurate way. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great video so glad I found this channel

Rio Grande Southern #41 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1881) operating at the Ghost Town & Calico Railroad.
Aweso,e video. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!
Man, I grew up in Grass Valley and never knew about this beauty. Thanks Guys !!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there a schedule for when the narrow gauge train runs at the theme park?
Every day when the park is open in the summer. In the off season The galloping goose runs on the weekdays while steam is used on the weekends. Once the train is loaded they send it out, it is about a 10 minute trip.
@@MrRGS41 alright thank you! Hope to visit Knott’s Berry Farm one day
@@MrRGS41 They use the Galloping Goose regularly? The last time I rode on it was during 2020 COVID when no one was at the park!

Fantastic video! This looks like a wonderful place to visit. I love the variety of equipment they have, and that Plymouth is a beautiful engine. Amazing work!

Nice railroad . planning to visit
This is beautiful
I live in nearby Grass Valley, and tried to become a docent at the NCNG Museum. I had NO idea at all that this had happened, but they freakin' did it! Operational narrow gauge steam has finally come back to my backyard.
Aww... such a cute little locomotive! I wonder if restoration to working order could ever happen? Can't help myself- I'd love to see them all run again! Didn't see a builder's plate, so just guessing- is Betsy a Davenport? Anyone know?
@shaunbolton4662 This locomotive was built by Vulcan in 1906. Betsy is a pretty cute loco. I too would love to see her run but unfortunately, I don't think that will happen anytime soon... if you know where to look though, there a quite a few similar locos in running condition out there.
This event was the reason why my interest on narrow gauge increased more than ever! Although I wasn’t experienced with photos and wasn’t familiar with the locations, it was amazing to finally see SP 18 for the first time
I hope one day to see the Ghost Town & Calico Railroad sometime over by next year.
2:40 that is an east broad top coal car, it was used during construction of the LK&P and track maintenance.
@G00FY_G Thank you for sharing and commenting. It's amazing to see where former EBT cars have wound up.
The coal car was East Broad Top No. 1028. The LK&P got it in 1995 from the White Pass & Yukon.
Awesome!
Is it alright if I use your NCNG 5 footage for a private music video I’m making? If not that’s fine
I noticed this has the 1881 on the locomotive. Is this still considered an operable 1800’s engine, or maybe not since it’s been patched with other parts? Reason I ask is only other one I can find in the west is in Carson city Nevada at their museum and they only take it out on rare occasions. Maybe you know some other 1800’s engines? Thanks
@NostalgiaFix81 Engine 340 would definitely classify as a genuine, operating 1880s steam locomotive, despite the fact that yes many parts have been replaced since then. So is Knott's other 2-8-0, RGS 41. The museum at Carson City has two 1875 engines ("Glenbrook" and "Inyo"), both of which retain many more original components than 340 does. Also, both have been accurately restored to that time period, whereas 340 represents the 1940-50 era. The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Museum has two steam engines from the 1800s. The first is "Tahoe", a sister to the "Glenbrook" and the oldest running narrow gauge train in the country. The second is a little Porter 0-4-0 built in 1889 and privately owned. Both these locos can be seen throughout my channel. There's also the "Eureka" too. I've probably missed a few but these are the most notable. Hope this helps and thanks for commenting!
😂
Guess what color the ground is here in WI.... White.
I have a photo of me and my dad and grandpa standing in front of the Green River #40. Not 400 or 340?
@Tinstared Back when Knott's acquired their two steam locos, they decided to renumber #340 to 40 for whatever reason (perhaps to make it consecutive with #41). Another bit of trivia: "Green River" was the name given to the engine by the D&RG back in 1881 when it was #400. She still bears this nickname on her cab. Thanks for sharing and commenting!
I got to go to Knotts Berry Farm in 1959 when we lived in Santa Ana

We lived in Westminister and used to go to Knotts every weekend it was free to enter. That was back in the early 60s. 10 cent hotdogs.

What crossing is at 10m 20s ?
@benwalters2449 That is the Seco Street crossing I believe. First road crossing south of Jamestown.
Nicely done! Thank you
Never Come Never Go RR !
I live 10 minutes from this awesome locomotive. I have the pleasure of watching her as I drive through town in the summer!
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing.
This is great little museum, the video doesn’t shown how steep the grade is on this track
Nice railroad How much track do es it have to run on.
@stevemellin5806 The track from the museum to the woods is about 1/3 of a mile. The meadow loop is slightly under 1/4 of a mile, and the Northern Queen line and loop adds another 1/4 mile. So, in total about 1 mile of track minus sidings, etc. Thanks for commenting!
Thank you for the information. I'll get Thier probably in the summer.
Of course! Steam Ups are every second Sunday of the month. You'll enjoy your visit.
2 foot or 3 foot
The museum runs 3-foot gauge trains.
