I admire the way everyone handled Kelly on his side. Stay low key, figure it out, and keep everybody safe. Kelly knew he was in a situation and you saved any ribbing for the campfire later. I hope I can find a good bunch of people to wheel with when I get my Jeep going again. Stay safe and healthy, everyone!
Kelly's recovery is amazing to watch. Nate is a perfect example of how you want a spotter to be. He was calm and collected. He stayed positive and didn't let anyone get panicked.
One of your best videos yet (IMO), great recovery explanation, reminding people not to "sleep" on Moab trails... and always watch your spotter. Keep up the great work!!
Great to see egos set aside and some smart, aggressive, fun, and safe wheel’n. Great job by the Three Musketeers! Great production as usual Nate; killed it.
Thank you! It's important to check the egos at the door in a place like this. The internet is full of videos of folks that don't have a healthy respect for moab. Two guys just died on moab rim last week.
Smart man Kelly. I have turned around at obstacles way easier than that just didn't feel right always listen to your gut. The one tool never really talked about. Great video!
That would have been a code"brown" moment for most people. Powerwash the seat cover and carry on. You obviously know your Jeep and its capabilities and drawbacks. Great video!
Narrowly escapes putting a window through the block from a runaway. Narrates the next scene “I can’t wait to push this Jeep even harder” hahaha Love it, man!
Nate, on version 2.0. Put an intake kill plate setup in front of the turbo. Incase u have a run away u flip a switch and it closes off the intake starving the engine of air killing it and hopefully saving it from blowing itself up.
They black lines on the rocks aren’t necessarily from “all the years” of people going across the rocks. You’d be amazed how quickly they disappear after a couple of good storms. Usually your just looking at that seasons lines. I’ve seen Hells Revenge with zero tracks at the beginning of the season before.
A diesel revving like that is never a good thing as you know. It's always fun to watch virgin drivers at Moab you never know what will happen and sometimes experienced drivers will have a tough day, I know all to well. ROCK ON!
The Escalator is no joke. I got screwed up in there first trip too. Lots of the “easy” stuff in Moab and Sandhollow still carry huge punishments for mistakes. It’s a great spot to not wheel with an ego or trying to show off, especially when you are on vacation and planning on driving your rig.
Hell's revenge was my first trail I went on back when I was 16. That was 25 years ago! The entrance used to be in a different place than it is now and some of the trail has been re-routed. Super fun trail though. Awesome job filming this trail!
Great job guys. No grief for Kelly. We all have to make decisions and know our rigs and comfort levels. Thrills need to be done with some common sense. I did Pritchett twice while there. But knowing inside gut instinct in smart. Congratulations and all the best on your own venture Nate. Safe wheeling.
I’ve had my diesel start to runaway once before. Got it shut off before anything bad thankfully. Oil vapor condensing in your charge air system is definitely something to keep an eye on when you drive a diesel if you don’t have a catch can.
Hells Revenge is one of my favorite 4x4 trails, nearby is Slick Rock bike trail if you like Mountain Bikes. Moab offers a lot. With my 4x4 and Mountain Bike in tow I can have fun all day.
Hell's Revenge was awesome! We were out there from April 17th thru April 22nd. This was my first time out there too, I ended up slipping off at the same point that Kelly almost laid it over and got some good 3 wheel air time coming out Mickey's Hot tub. Love the channel! Keep doin what you're doin!
I love that he called out that he had bad tire placement. I was going to say "why would you turn up the wall?". But he said it himself :). Glad you made it out
I've heard that happen on big diesel engines when the turbo seal goes out. The engine will run away running on motor oil only. Unfortunately most of the time the engine self detonates. I've heard of a guy stuffing his shirt into the intake.
Great video Nate, I've been wheeling in the mountains on the east slopes of the Cascades, central eastern Washington, for years and I prefer to "take it easy " because most of the time I have to drive home in my Jeep and don't want to chance an impromptu overnight stay. I would love to be wheeling there in that Beautiful country with Y'all. But my 94' YJ is basically stock except the 2.5 " lift springs because of the nature of the terrain in the PNW!! I really need to swap out the stock axles and get lockers too. GLAD you kept the inside for your engine where it belongs. 👍 Love the fab videos you do as much as the wheeling.
I was in moab probably a month and a half ago with my jeep for the first time. Its super cool to see guys this experienced doing the same trail I did, while hitting the majority of the same features!
Hell ya. Nice work. I chose Kelley's theme when I was there. Kelly and my jeep are almost exact wb,wms, and tire size. Pnw rigs are definitely out gunned down there. Can't wait to see the Pritchett video. We ran that wendsday missed the rain u had Thursday.
Yeah dude! In the pnw we build them alot different. But I've had some folks up from the Midwest that don't understand how wheeling is possible up here lol
Great video Nate . I don't blame Kelly for calling it quits for the day after his near rollover . Great time with great people , you just can't beat that . Until next time take care and be safe.
Awesome recovery! Thanks' for the lesson on testing the winch line! I've done Hells several times in my LJR and I always skip the Gate (and Escalator). That line has to be spot on... nail the line and easy peasy. Miss it and you can get in trouble! Be there in 3 weeks... a lot to think about. Lol. ;-)
Every time I hit Moab, I always start off with Fins N Things. That trail is just fun. Then I normally go over the "Baby Lion??" (I think that is what it's called) on my way back down to hit Hell Revenge. That usually rounds off the first day.
Sucks to see the Jeep TDI engine have issues. I do agree a catch can is a great solution as I use them with every turbo setup I have done. Amazing video and always enjoy how you explain the obstacles. The drone and camera shots keep getting better and better. Also I appreciate the use of Google Earth to show a nice overlay of each part of the trail. Can’t wait to see the TDI rebuild 2.0!!
Kapps has a nice build. I think his rig is a good illustration of an engine that makes good power and torque, vs. Nate's small displacement turbo diesel that has a ton of torque, but lacks a bit in the power department. If all you need to do is crawl then Nate's engine works great. Turbo diesels are great a crawling. If you want wheel speed, you need power to produce that (torque over time) and a small displacement engine will struggle (size and number of power strokes per second is lower). Nate had to get that small diesel up to high RPM (give it all the beans) to generate the power to get the wheels spinning to exit the hot tub, but Kapps just laid into the throttle with moderate RPM and generated the power needed to get the wheels spinning and exit the obstacle.
I was just there last week my 02 Sequoia, pretty much walked up hell's revenge with an awesome spotter and co pilot. I feel like the longer/wider wheel base made it fairly simple.
100% love the respect for moab, you guys rocked it being fish out of water, the last 2 yrs was a 5 spd tj on 33s this year we're going all out xj auto on 40s and tons cant wait to try it out would absolutely love to wheel with you guys
Hey Nate, I noticed you have the Corbeau baja seats. I just had to return the Baja JP seats and replace them with the wide versions (that are actually taller, not wider) because the should harness slots were too low, are you concerned about spinal compression if you were to roll the Jeep?
Thank you for using a winch on Hell's Gate. I don't think enough people use a winch when they should. no Shame in not damaging your rig, or worse, injuring yourself or others. good call!
Any chance you will be updating the stock cage soon? Just noticed your TJ is running the stock cage and you run some hard trails. With your fab skills I’m guessing it could be pretty cool.
Nate, Nate, Nate, Hell's gate is a must do, Impressed with muddy beards, He didn't even look shaky on his almost roll over, but he did wuss out on hell's revenge. Bro, You were running a little late on your video this week. I was sitting here on the couch with my Jeep and crawler magazines and a bag of popcorn for 2 days. Put a new fuel pump in my LJ and still can't get it to pump fuel. The Jeep gods just are not on my side.
another sick video ! thanks for all the amazing info and tour with information. i really enjoyed drinking my coffee and watching this after a long week of work.
I live in Yakima, and head to Utah when we can. We (wife & I) have a quad (Grizzley 700) with passenger seat. When I watch the Moab videos, I see all the jeeps / UTV but no quads. do quads do these trails also?
Nate. Is your VW 1.9TD modified from a front to a rear drop oil sump mista sir ? We like the XJ Cherokee's with the old 4.0 cast iron lump up the pointy end ! V.
Nate in version 2.0 move your PCV to the middle of the valve cover. Drill and rebung. that way it won’t suck up oil at high down angle and high up angle on hills you can still put the catch can but my design is superior. Plug that back of the valve cover pcv port. Make sure you mention me if you go my route. 👍
I hear a weak cylinder on starting, hope you didn't ding a valve. Couldn't you relocate the breather to the top center of your valve cover to prevent run away? Catch can works but what happens if it fills up on a climb?
9:22 - Could already see a winch cable relieving Nate of his shin. Please guys, always stay well clear when winching and use a dampener at the heaviest part of the line (the hook). Other than that, great videos.
That's one thing I miss , seeing Nate go by the house on his way to another adventure now only if you drive by N.W. Trek and instead of seeing 1 black German Shepperd their are 5
I have a Currie Ford 9" rear axle on my gen 1 Tacoma and I am running a spool. I am thinking about switching to an ARB air locker. Are there any option where the diff is limited slip when the locker is not engaged?
As someone that has swapped a BEW TDI into a Suzuki samurai I’m curious why you didn’t just vent the CCV to the atmosphere. Correct me if I’m wrong but the only reason the CCV is connected to the intake on a factory application is for emissions. If your explanation in the video is really why it ran away, simply venting to the air will prevent any further runaways, at least because of that situation. An added benefit is that your entire turbo/intake system will stay a little cleaner and the only source for oil into the system is the turbo.
Hahaha...Ole Kelly...Very happy to see you brought your WA buddies down to Moab for a go. If ya'll ever make it to colorado between July and October, I would love to show ya some trails like, Holy Cross, Wheeler, and Chinamans Gulch.
Great video. Headed to Moab next year. Running. 98” TJ on tons and 37s. Odd question but what seats are you running? Got Baja RS now and the big bolsters are killin me.
A friend and I did Hell's Revenge and Fins-N-Things last Friday. There was a lightly modified 4-Runner in front of us that almost came over backwards at that same spot.
@andrew kaperick, I live in Scotland and there's a peak on the Isle of Skye, Cullen Mountains called the Inaccessible Pinnacle! It's the only Mountain in Scotland that you need climbing experience to get to the top of, possibly ropes, harnesses and climbing shoes. You certainly need to abseil (Rappel) off the top. It's worth Googling it! I climbed it in July 2019 and there was a crowd of people hanging around, none of them wanted to be the first to climb. It's certainly more than a scramble. I climbed to the top where you descend to from the flake of rock, took off my rucksack, took out my rope and harness and climbed back down to the start with everyone watching. Off I climbed and ten minutes later I was setting up my rope to abseil back down to my rucksack. It's not a hard climb but it is "exposed" with an 800ft drop off on one side. The 12/15 people gave me a round of applause when I was back down and I felt embarrassed. I enjoyed the climb but what I didn't tell them was that I've climbed it over a dozen times before. I spent the next hour and a half guiding people up to the peak. I have fought my fear of heights and climbed all over Europe, I've even done a free fall parachute course while I was serving in the British Armed Forces, 5 static line jumps and 7 free falls but I suppose that I don't show my emotions, either good or bad, excited or bored. I just get on and do it and make good memories! Don't listen to the piss takers..... as long as you enjoyed yourself, Kapp. That's all that matters!
hells gate is no joke! good video for sure but it never translates to the real angles in moab. ive been on that trail many times and watching this gives me the shivers anyway. we like to hit hells revenge just before sunset and drive up to the top of the first long tall fin and watch the stars come out. family loves hanging out up there for a few hours like that in their sleeping bagsand then head back to camp. its become a tradition for my group.
Runaways don't typically cause head damage unless you consume all the oil. Will either burn a combustion chamber or bend a rod. Both resulting in lowered compression. Look forward to seeing what you find.
Looked like a great time! Although after watching this I'm kind of disappointed that when I make it out to Moab my stock wheelbase YJ will have to be a spectator at most of the obstacles. Especially with the light 2.5L up front and camping/overlanding gear in the back.
Oh Kelly...only a lap belt on a new obstacle well known for short wheelbase roll-overs? Shame shame. You learned me something about diesels Nate. I've always been a gasser Jeep guy and never knew about runaway. Damn good thing you're so smarty pants with engines. Excellent trail. I always make it my first too.
Never seen a runaway on an engine that small. Imo you're super lucky that you managed to get it shut down with just a few bent valves. Great job man. The 3 times I've seen it happen have all been on semi trucks and 1 back hoe. All three ended with holes in the block.
Man, I can't wait to do stuff like this, trying to get some beefier axles first. Not mechanically inclined though, any ideas on something I can buy and just slap on? Was thinking 60 in front 44 in rear, currently stock 98 TJ axles 30's I believe
I'm really digging all these mashups with creators!
Lots of carnage! I love how you always show the good and the bad! Keep up the awesome work Nate!!
Thank you!
Incredible views and footage! You're a natural born narrator Nate! The world needs you, awesome and thanks for taking us along!
Smart man Kelly. I have turned around at obstacles way easier than that just didn't feel right always listen to your gut. The one tool never really talked about. Great video!
I love this level of support 🙌 you definitely "get it" man 👊
That would have been a code"brown" moment for most people. Powerwash the seat cover and carry on. You obviously know your Jeep and its capabilities and drawbacks. Great video!
Lol we had many code brown moments this day!
"Nobody has pistons outside the block!" Win. Win. 👍👌👏😉🤣
Lol for sure
LOL. Hurry up and end the video while we're still ahead!
You have the best video quality / editing / videography on TH-cam. By far.
Thank you very much! Giant compliment right here 🙏
Nice clean run on Mickey's by Kaps. Great video, Nate.
Next episode: Cummins 2.8 swapping the tj!
Lol
You mean paint shaker swap? 😁
You beat me to it lol
Get deboss onboard and it will be a 24 valve p pump swap
They black lines on the rocks aren’t necessarily from “all the years” of people going across the rocks. You’d be amazed how quickly they disappear after a couple of good storms. Usually your just looking at that seasons lines. I’ve seen Hells Revenge with zero tracks at the beginning of the season before.
Bro love ya I'm from Utah now living in Oregon, You are the kind of guy you wanna see on the trails! Respectful, Responsible, Leave no trace
Sometimes after an adrenaline bump like Kelly got, it can take a few hours or a day to normalize again lol. I don’t blame him for not pushing it.
You just have such an amazing way of explaining things. Such amazing content. Thanks Nate
Thank you! I'm honored 🙏
A diesel revving like that is never a good thing as you know. It's always fun to watch virgin drivers at Moab you never know what will happen and sometimes experienced drivers will have a tough day, I know all to well. ROCK ON!
Dang Kelly! That recovery was awesome. I would be shitting myself.. glad the jeep was OK!
Great video 👍 I’m glad your engine didn’t self destruct on that climb. Diesel run on can get really bad quick.
Take care
The Escalator is no joke. I got screwed up in there first trip too. Lots of the “easy” stuff in Moab and Sandhollow still carry huge punishments for mistakes. It’s a great spot to not wheel with an ego or trying to show off, especially when you are on vacation and planning on driving your rig.
Lol you definitely get it! Lots of pressure to not destroy your rig when you drive 2 days to get here
ya Escalator and Pritchet are hard on our daily driving jeeps from Canucistan .
A catchcan would likely have been your savior on that incline, good on you for quick thinking and staying cool. 👍🏻🇷🇴🇬🇧
Great video! It keeps enough action to keep you enticed throughout the whole video.
Thank you!
My oldest bought a JK and is a fireman down in Cali. I told him to continue watching your videos so he can get an idea how to modify his.
Kapp’s rig is legit! Sounds great too
Hell's revenge was my first trail I went on back when I was 16.
Safe wheeling.
great job filming and editing very entertaining to watch. The quality of editing and all the camera angles is much appreciated.
Thank you!
Or a month
Outstanding video. Love the drone views! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Thanks for take me along. Great job on the trail and producing another pleasure to watch video🍻
Nice intuitive spotting!! Knowing a little real world physics helps! Great job!
Wow, that was steep! Kelly stayed calm and was a smooth recovery.
Great video Nate,
I've been wheeling in the mountains on the east slopes of the Cascades, central eastern Washington, for years and I prefer to "take it easy " because most of the time I have to drive home in my Jeep and don't want to chance an impromptu overnight stay.
Love the fab videos you do as much as the wheeling.
I was in moab probably a month and a half ago with my jeep for the first time. Its super cool to see guys this experienced doing the same trail I did, while hitting the majority of the same features!
Excellent job on the description of the recovery and why that’s very important for so many that is unfamiliar. Grr job as always Nate
thanks for sharing with us the details of this legendary trail
Great video of Moab! Thanks for the mapping and trail detail! I'm from Washington to. Great job representing the Pacific Northwest!
Hell ya.
Does your friend Cap? with the black YJ have a social media page? I would like to see his build list for my YJ project.
Lol. ;-)
"It just got interesting" is the understatement of the day!! lol! Love the video!
Every time I hit Moab, I always start off with Fins N Things. That trail is just fun. Then I normally go over the "Baby Lion??" (I think that is what it's called) on my way back down to hit Hell Revenge. That usually rounds off the first day.
Great video and great commentary. This has inspired me to tear into my '75 CJ5 and get it back on the rocks. Thanks Nate for the motivation!
The Best Feeling from offroading is being able to drive back home & towed. Great Video
That was an awesome video Nate.
Couple of real exciting bits
Glad you got the car running, I thought it was much worse at first too.
Your video skills are off the chain! Amazing attention to detail!
WHOA that was scary on the runaway engine part and Kelly. Way to stay calm and levelheaded! you guys rock!
When you get bak home, dry sump the sucker. Get a pump that will pull.vacuum on the lower part of the engine and gimbal the dry sump tank.
driving skills are off the charts on this one! super nice saves
Love Hell’s Revenge and Love Moab. This past time i tore the 4Runners fromt bumper off on the locker checker!!!
Watching from Australia loved it
Best Moab / Utah video I have seen and they are some of my fave American wheeling videos to watch
Had me sitting on the edge of the couch for a minute! Love the video guys
I like the new uplifting music @ 11:37. Wheeling videos never do themselves justice. Hell's revenge is intimidating.
what radio for comms do you have in your rig? the one that is shown on the over boost section do the left of the steering wheel?
Nate, Nate, Nate, Hell's gate is a must do, Impressed with muddy beards, He didn't even look shaky on his almost roll over, but he did wuss out on hell's revenge.
Bro, You were running a little late on your video this week. I was sitting here on the couch with my Jeep and crawler magazines and a bag of popcorn for 2 days. Put a new fuel pump in my LJ and still can't get it to pump fuel. The Jeep gods just are not on my side.
Lol
another sick video ! thanks for all the amazing info and tour with information. i really enjoyed drinking my coffee and watching this after a long week of work.
Just got interesting! Great response!
You want to back up or hook up winch? Think I’d have gone with winch as well...and new pair of drawers.
I didn't modify the pickup in any way. I believe the BRM is rear but I know for sure it has a great baffle system!
Nate in version 2.0 move your PCV to the middle of the valve cover. Drill and rebung. that way it won’t suck up oil at high down angle and high up angle on hills you can still put the catch can but my design is superior. Plug that back of the valve cover pcv port. I hear a weak cylinder on starting, hope you didn't ding a valve. Couldn't you relocate the breather to the top center of your valve cover to prevent run away? Catch can works but what happens if it fills up on a climb?
I'm 99% sure I floated the valves. Won't know for sure until I open it up 👍
Always a good day when the oil pan keeps all the parts in 😎
Great video as always 👍
9:22 - Could already see a winch cable relieving Nate of his shin. Please guys, always stay well clear when winching and use a dampener at the heaviest part of the line (the hook). Other than that, great videos.

Not sure man! I have heard that auburn has somthing like this but I haven't done any research
As someone that has swapped a BEW TDI into a Suzuki samurai I’m curious why you didn’t just vent the CCV to the atmosphere. Hahaha...Ole Kelly...Very happy to see you brought your WA buddies down to Moab for a go. If ya'll ever make it to colorado between July and October, I would love to show ya some trails like, Holy Cross, Wheeler, and Chinamans Gulch.
These are on the bucket list 👌. I will make my way that direction eventually
Great Video! thanks Nate, happy travels!
Thank you!
And that my friends is why I advocate positive shut-offs for diesels. Great video!
Great video. Headed to Moab next year. Running. 98” TJ on tons and 37s. Odd question but what seats are you running? Got Baja RS now and the big bolsters are killin me.
You guys literally ROCKS!!!!
A friend and I did Hell's Revenge and Fins-N-Things last Friday. There was a lightly modified 4-Runner in front of us that almost came over backwards at that same spot.
17:33 what tool kit is that? Looks cool has a breaker bar and everything.
Nate: “Today was outstanding! 😆
Kipps: “i had a blast. 😒😑
Lol do you know Kapp or something? You totally nailed his personality 👏
Damn lol I'll work on it
Haha no, he just seems like a chill cool dude

Thanks! I agree, it's impossible to capture what this place is like on video. I did my best lol
Runaways don't typically cause head damage unless you consume all the oil. Will either burn a combustion chamber or bend a rod. Both resulting in lowered compression. Look forward to seeing what you find.
My concern is that was floating valves at those rpms but I can't be sure until I get in there 👍
Looked like a great time!
Going to be making the trip from Maine to Moab for the first time in my H1 this September. Hell's Revenge is definitely on the list.
hope you've submitted your comment to the land bureau thats trying to shut down moab.. Nate, you should provide a link in the description!
Man, I can't wait to do stuff like this, trying to get some beefier axles first. Not mechanically inclined though, any ideas on something I can buy and just slap on? Was thinking 60 in front 44 in rear, currently stock 98 TJ axles 30's I believe
I would contact fusion 4x4. They have a bunch of options for bolt in TJ axles 👍
@@DirtLifestyle awesome thanks so much!
Another great video Nate. I'd imagine combining all that footage and editing is a real pain, but you're creating great content. Keep it up!
Always have some great content! Thanks brother and God bless
Thanks!
I was in Moab last week, and did not have the gonads to attempt Mickey's in my LJ. Good to know it's possible with a 103" wheelbase. Next time!
Tap a hole and drain the charge pipes every now and then. Looking forward to watching the rebuild videos!
I will second this request- show us the rebuild
