I accidentally came across this video performance by Alexander Malofeev. Absolutely splendid. Malofeev is in his high carat musical element a young keyboard master in total control of the musical notes he creares with such technical aplomb. Altinoglu at the baton certainly knows how to temper the rythym and harmony of thr entire, phenomenal performance. Heaven sent, soul robbing musical feat.

Wunderschöne und spannende Aufführung dieser spätromantischen und ethnisch komponierten Rhapsodie mit klar artikuliertem Klang des technisch fehlerlosen Soloklaviers sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. Der intelligente und geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im veränderlichen Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Wundervoll und atemberaubend zugleich!

Ethnische Musik ist als eine Art von Musik bekannt, die zur Kultur einer bestimmten Gemeinschaft und einer bestimmten Region gehört. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Genres trägt sie durch die darin enthaltenen Instrumente, Rhythmen, Melodien und Texte zur musikalischen Demonstration einer bestimmten ethnischen Kultur bei. Auf diese Weise ist es ein guter Leitfaden für gegenwärtige und zukünftige Generationen.

At least according to the internet, the first recording of this piece was done (with Rachmaninoff himself no less, among others) by RCA with the Philadelphia orchestra at Trinity Church Studio in Camden NJ back in 1935, not more than five minutes from where I live. Times have sure changed. One thing that has not changed is RCA Victor's iconic Nipper, who still has a statue here at the center of town.

Die achtzehnte Variation klingt echt romantisch und schmachtend. Im Gegenzug klingt die letzte Variation echt lebhaft und auch spannend.
