    Just wanted to say how great the work is that the team did for this piece. We were so slammed with APUs and Iris Xe (and an overlapping vacation from a teammate) that we only had 12 hours to pull this piece together. That means all the testing, writing, image analysis, studying of the feature, and editing was done between the hours of 4pm and 4am, then I stayed behind for the upload. The other guys carried this one. I was barely alive after pushing the other pieces through. The reception has been great from you all - thanks for watching it!

    AMD deserve a pat on the back. They delivered on a promise, for the most part, and have gone down the open source and cross platform route and this is only V1.0 - future iterations can only improve on this great starting point - we just need Games Developers & Studios to jump onboard and bring it to more games.

    • @VioletViolent
      @VioletViolent 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Considering how FSR works, I'm not really sure how it can improve apart from a total overhaul similar to the transition between DLSS 1.0 and 2.0. Just for info, FSR basically splits the image in 2 segments: shapes and details, then proceeds to upscale both using different method before making bring those back together for the post process pass.

    • @MIK33EY
      @MIK33EY 3 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      @@VioletViolent I get where you’re coming from, but all I say is that FSR is open source - being posted to GPU Open - so it can only get better. It’s a great starting point and I think it has surprised a great many people, me included, many of whom I suspect were convinced AMD was going to fall flat on their face.

    • @VioletViolent
      @VioletViolent 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I'm a pessimist by heart, and I'm also not a software engineer. I should probably give AMD more credit considering how decent FSR seems here compared to their own reveal a few weeks ago

  • @ShredBird
    @ShredBird 3 ปีที่แล้ว +562

    Basically, in a nutshell, when you need more performance, instead of lowering the resolution you can use FSR, which lowers the resolution but provides very high quality upscaling. Honestly I'll take that as a win. Running anything but native resolution on an LCD has always looked pretty bad. This is great for people that just want to squeeze a little more out of their GPUs and make them last a bit longer without suffering by turning the resolution down.

    • @barmybarnabas8314
      @barmybarnabas8314 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      I see that as a definite win, this is for those that want to squeeze just another year of GPU usage before having to upgrade which I really support.

    • @RobBCactive
      @RobBCactive 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      There's upscaling monitor displays, then forcing display upscaling gives both more performance and clarity without input lag.
      Been testing FSR and it's easier to use, despite that ppl forget to turn image sharpening off then complain about blur (a 2nd CAS pass fuzzs)

    • @usernameisinuse
      @usernameisinuse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It is a definite win for my usecase for example. When I did my computer build, both the parts and and monitor choice was a balancing act of productivity, gaming, room/desk space, and of course availability. Because of that I have a single quite large 4k monitor that I love using for productivity, but my GPU cannot handle most new games and good settings on 4k resolution. FSR seems to be providing just enough of a performance boost that it could enable me to use the monitor's native resolution instead of 1440p when playing games and that would be amazing.

    I could guess the performance mode easily because it was blurry, but when it came out to Native 4k vs Balanced mode, the extra sharpening in some spots is what gave away the balanced mode to me. most people would probably see a sharper image and perceive it as the better option at first, but after spending time with it you can tell there is something wrong. but over all ultra quality and quality modes are very good for first gen of this feature.

      I caught it through the OTHER telling part of any game, Frame Rate/Pacing. The middle was choppy as hell so its obviously a 4k image. Right was less choppy and smoother so likely balance. Left was smooth as silk and pretty much zero dropped frames/stutter that I could see so HAD to be the Performance Mode.

Works regardless of your GPU (to an extent) and at higher resolutions like 1440p and 4k with the higher presets, you get a good performance bump for minimal quality loss. Even in it's current state it would be an automatic toggle for me. And at 1080p it's going to look better then simply running at a lower resolution, and the option is great for anyone that really needs it. Which means you could see performace or image quality uplift as soon as it drops on consoles. Also, even if you develop directly on console, why wouldn't you use a solution that increases performance if it means you have more performance budget to spend elsewhere. It's likely not as good as dlss2.0, but it also doesn't necessarily need to be for many use cases, if I can stretch an older or lower tier gpu for another year or two, or in text/interface heavy games let people play at native res instead of fully post upscaled, with a dash of image quality improvements (vs just scaling) along the way, that's a huge win.

      Maybe you haven't noticed, but when companies in any industry start innovating at the higher end of the enthusiast market, they tend to lock it down to their products. Especially when second place is SO far behind. Whether that's proprietary hardware connections, trademarks, patents....whatever, they want their product to be the best.
      That's all Nvidia has done with DLSS. It gives better performance while also making the image better than native (in quality mode). There is literally no downside other than proprietary hardware...which is 100% understandable as a business decision. Nvidia cards paired with DLSS 2.0 games are so insanely ahead of anything else on the market, that you would be a complete moron not to make sure your company's name isn't directly associated with it.
      AMD is doing a good job at the lower end, and will benefit many more people by making more games accessible to their current hardware. That's awesome, but the reason it doesn't deserve comparison to DLSS is because of that. This is a low end enhancement that will give their brand some street credit to the people that need the extra performance, but can't afford any form of upgrade.
      DLSS 2.0 is for the enthusiast high end, that allows you to add even more high end features like ray tracing to an already amazing pixel count, without sacrificing any performance. So it just makes the best even better. Enthusiasts like myself do NOT like compromise, and FSR clearly requires the user to make one. DLSS 1 sucked and didn't get used by anyone, so we'll see if FSR even makes the attempt to compete in the "no compromise" arena, but I have a feeling that isn't even the company's vision.

      @Picasso Pablo Yes, although I wouldn't go as far as to assume them all being bought (if this is what you meant). For sure some are bought, but for the most I think it's a general problem of internet media relying on hype trains, as this generally catches most attention with the least effort. And opposed to earlier times (like the 80's and 90's game magazines), the internet actually centralizes this behaviour IMHO, because where we once had thousands of 'little opinion islands' , there now always is one currently common most popular denominator about any topic, especially on TH-cam with it's own popularity related algorithms. So the change from the reviewer's dependency on ads (from many diverse companies..) to a new dependency on only views seemingly achieved the opposite of what we would have expected: Fewer and more similar opinions = less diversity. :(

    Can't wait to see this implemented on Dota 2 and other competitive games where graphics don't matter as much and frames do much, much more.

    Months later FSR is in Cyberpunk, and it's really nice. Perhaps other optimizations also improved frames in areas, but I went from around mid-40fps at medium settings to 60-70fps medium settings with FSR Quality and a rx480, at a more than tolerable trade-off of image quality. Huge upgrade from CAS. At Ultra Quality, I get 10-20 more fps with no perceivable loss of image quality. Made me a believer for sure.

    This actually looks pretty promising, even moreso than the initial reveal. I hope AMD can get some more implementation into games. I want to try it out, but I don't have the games that currently support it. I'm also a bit worried because I heard that Nvidia is trying to prevent game developers from adopting FSR.

      Well, Unreal engine 4 already got dlss, Unreal engine 5 is getting dlss 2.2 support, Unit is going to get it, same for latest id software engine and many others. But developers can still support fsr too if they want.

    That sample was nearly impossible to distinguish in such conditions. I had to look for a flaw. Noticed the Native quality, and with really heavy look over saw the performance and then the balanced. It's an amazing work at what they achieved so far for all of us.

    I guessed them correctly fairly easily. I immediately noticed the left one looked blurry on the rocks compared to the others so I assumed right away it was performance fsr. Right side textures looked slightly less "crisp" to me than center so I guessed balanced on the right and native in the center.

    All this is great, now we just need some people to stop calling these upscaling techniques “Native Resolution” like I’ve seen in some comment threads. As impressive as the technologies are, calling them native resolution is like comparing a whole small pizza to a slice of extra large pizza. Yes, you might be getting a similar fill of pizza, but the extra large slice is still a slice. It’s not a whole pizza like the small is. Likewise, as impressive FSR and DLSS are at resolving an image to a higher screen resolution, you’re not getting a native image, so people need to stop calling it native.

      It gets worse when people say that DLSS looks better than native resolution. I've seen that multiple times and it's such a dumb statement. Even consoles have been using multiple forms of upscaling for years and, while they look pretty good, native res will always look better.

      @@rodryguezzz @Forrest Edgar - dlss can look better than native - maybe not in general, but it is finally a good solution to the temporal aliasing issue - if someone finds that very annoying (it's awful when it happens) then that could be enough to tip the scales in its favour on the image quality slider.
