Stanley learning what an internal hub is.

I just had this idea for greatly simplified internal hub gearing:
    ...../
    ><
    ......\
You just use a a small diameter geared cone on the chainside (left) that can slide up and down a large geared cone on the drive side (wheel, right) using a friction shifter .. ??? Why isn't this the greatest idea ever? 😊

turning a cassette into swiss watch seems like something that would jam as soon as any mud or water or dust enters.

This is also how an automatic transmission of a car works.

Almost anything besides the torque converter

It's quite simple really. You're on a planet going round the sun, therefore your gears will only work during the day.

Basically, depending on how the input (drive chain) and the output (rear wheel) are connected with the gear hub, it changes the gear ratio, hence the speed/torque.
For this gear hub, there are 3 settings:
      - Normal Gear setting (1 in 1 out), by connecting the drive chain directly to the rear wheel. This bypasses the gear hub entirely.
      - Low Gear setting (4 in 3 out), by connecting the drive chain to the ring gear, and connecting the rear wheel to the planet gear's disk. This increases torque by lowering speed.
      - High Gear setting (3 in 4 out), by connecting the drive chain to the planet gear's disk, and connecting the rear wheel to the ring gear. This increases speed by lowering torque.
Because of physics, Work = Force * Displacement, which you may understand as Energy = Torque * Distance Travelled. So when using the low gear, your bike travels less distance with the same energy that your legs put in, but it is easier to accelerate a heavy bike since most of that energy is spent on torque instead of distance.

It reminds me of automatic cars vs mamuel in a way intetnsl.hubs are like automatic cars where you dont have to use a derailer like a clutch
