I agree. How often do you see a rapper that’s signed to a rapper have a prominent career? Most of the time they get lost in the shuffle or end up giving their music to the major artist on the label.
No its not, barley anybody kmows or listens to rylo. 90% of his fanbasehas trockled down from lil baby so hes stuck in a jox and cant expand.@kingk3624
Yo Gotti is probably the best rapper and label owner but I think it’s because he’s focused on being a label owner and not a rapper in this point of his career
By that metric wouldn't J.Cole be #1. He doesn't take songs from his artist. Puts out a label album consistently and everybody on his label has a lane while he's still a star
In terms of pure commercial potential, nobody is really close to Opium. Carti is 10x bigger than Moneybagg Yo and that whole label in literally every aspect: followers, monthly listeners, dedicated fanbase, ability to sell merch, and so on... I seriously doubt Moneybagg Yo or anyone from that label has to ability to do a world tour, a very American audience.
@@theyhateiliasbecause he had no new music out people didn’t want to hear an album that has been out for years be performed again but if he were to drop he would fs would sell
Pretty much. The record business operates like Fashion in a sense. Like how there are 3 fashion houses that own all the brands and everybody is under them... All record labels like Sony, Warner Brothers & UMG hold all the power. Then there's Labels like 300, Cash Money & so on who are subsidiaries of their parent companies... then artists start their labels! There's no benefit to that because its sooo much money being broken up soooo many ways. By the time it reaches the artist, it's meaningless damn near.
If you're signed to another rapper (larger than you), you're rarely not destined to be under their shadow. You're in a position where you could be perceived as the hype man and under their control and momentum because you gave them the keys to your own car. You don't need it in 2024, I'd steer away from signing to a rapper-owned label.
Kanye signed to Jay Z, Drake Signed to Wayne, Travis Signed To Kanye, J. Cole Signed to Jay Z, Kendrick Signed to Dr. Dre, Eminem Signed to Dr. Dre, 50 Cent signed to Dr. Dre … most goats started signed to another artist and then went on to start their own label fr because they got to learn from another Goat
So 3 people made 8 goats you forgot Niki and that proves this is a viable path despite ye and drake need to release music mixtapes independently so the labels would give them a chance because they were pretty much going to be writers if they didn’t
Rappers rarely own their label. A Parent label GIVES them their label and controls it. They are but a face a mascot used for advertising to bring in younger rappers that think they are cool.
The big labels make artists who don’t want to sign do their dirty work. They send these rappers out there to recruit and the artist who didn’t want to sign to that major still ends up being signed to that major by way of signing to that “label” that the artist owns. Fun fact: none of these artists actually own a record label.
Yo Gotti might be the current only one that works because he’s in a more executive role than a success role. They only work when the artists signed success is not dependent on the the artists they signed to co-signing them or giving them a feature
Don't worry I know better. The amount of people that told me I'm taking you with me to cheapen the cost of production only to still be here is astounding. People love to sell you a dream but never follow through.
Actually, creative people are often the WORST businessmen. The Beatles started their own label, Apple Records. Administratively, Financially ... It was a Disaster.
Think it's more so what the Artist does on the feature that determines if they blow or not. If they're mid on the feature and don't surprise the audience then what was the point in the first place. Most of the new artist rely on the feature instead of showing there talent and what brought them to the table.
There are text messages between Babystorme and Ice spice showing Nicki was trying to sign her and take all her publishing but Ice wasn’t stupid enough to take that deal just to be associated with Nicki Minaj
Teyana Taylor said it best. She was giving a 100 percent she only received 10 percent. It would make sense if Kanye West focused on his artists more than himself but Kanye can't do that. He produces for other people but he does it for himself too. There is not enough time for everyone plus have a normal life.

is it just me or is there a reason that the biggest artists in hip hop currently are all signed to artist labels. Maybe it’s because hip hop and traditional music industry label structures don’t mix well with hip hop
You using Kanye as the ultimate comparison for rapper labels was not a good idea. Kanye is a narcissist and he’s bipolar so I would assume the other rapper labels are more well managed than what Kanye was doing lol.
People signed to Kanye said bro was all over the place. They would just wake up and he would have a new number and they had no way to even contact him. He would disappear on them for months and all kind of shit bro. 😂
