Fight game stories matter, the issue is that most of them are trash just there to justify a supposedly dead character returning for 2626256th time or to justify guests
One of my fave story moments is from the Xrd story mode where Sol makes Ramlethal realize her sheltered viewpoint of humanity and shows her a new way to live... by punching a wall so hard that it gets turned to dust. It makes perfect sense in context
I agree with sonicHaXD, the overall story’s isn’t anything to ride home about but then you get these characters moments that really shine, like in MK11 aftermath when Fujin is talking to Jax about kroinka’s true nature, and how having a family makes them stronger since they have something worth protecting ,it was really nice, in injustice 2 when brainiac blows up metropolis and the hero’s can’t find Superman and Supergirl is talking to Batman and he pours his heart about of he misses the old Clark and he felt terrible when he couldn’t bring him back. NRS can make good story’s, I believe they have the potential
Yeah NRS does have potential, the only problem is how they laid out the story mode into a cinematic chapter-by-chapter basis where it's a long single chronological line where it's the only thing to follow. They could've followed similar footsteps from Soul Calibur 6 or Dead Or Alive 6 on story mode progression, where everyone is playable from different chapters of the story that gives you different perspectives of their own plot from one another.
I just wish they would bring back that classic mysterious mystical ninja vibe mk used to have. It feels like nrs is trying to make mortal kombat more like the mcu with blood, but I prefer the old vibe mk had, it was a big part of my childhood lol
@@CYB3R2K It's also not in the right context. It's from Marvel Capcom Infinite when people were asking why some characters were in the game while others weren't. Capcom basically said "Hey, the character you want is _technically_ in the game! This one here does a lot of the same stuff!" (that's where the whole "functions" thing comes from) while somehow not realizing that there are a lot of minute details that dictated how the character _felt to play._ So it was a _gameplay complaint voiced through the roster,_ not because of any story. There might have been some overlap, sure, but certainly not at that point in time.
@@SageRuffinto be fair, a character based complaint is also a story based complaint, because it's often because of that character's story that people enjoy it, even if it's not in the game itself. Like how despite it not happening in MvC3, both Iron Man and Captain America reference going through Civil War so you know what they've been through or how you know that MvC Spiderman actually got through One More Day but didn't fall for the Mephisto deal.
To any idiots that says: "Story and lore don't matter in fighting games!" You have no idea what makes fighting games compelling in the first place. There's a reason why most iconic characters in fighting games have a compelling story behind them.
I remember in MKX, seeing Kuai Liang expose Quan Chi and Sektor’s role in massacring the Shirai Ryu to Scorpion and showing that Sub Zero/Bi Han was framed by Quan Chi for eliminating his family. Seeing them finally end their feud. It felt so cathartic after growing up with several games of them having such hatred towards each other.
Tekken 4 story. The part where Jin/devil jin was about to kill heihachi but then he saw a statue and chose peace. I honestly thought he would take a new path from them.... And then Tekken 6 happened
That was more than a statue, it was a vision of his mother Jun Right after he decided to spare Heihachi, he said, "You better thank my mother, Jun Kazama" and flies away
A lot of people don't truly understand what happened in Tekken 6. Jin learned of a prophecy and forced himself to be a asshole to the world to make that prophecy happen immediately and since he thought he was gonna die for it. He didn't care about his impressions in the world just that he could save it and die in the process.
The amount of people who say “story doesn’t matter in fighting games” is nuts, if devs didn’t think story wasn’t important then why did they take the time to create said story?
Find it baffling this way and insane and what perspective do they have in the first place? Oh they just want the game and be the player and that’s it? They’re just alienating why they’re franchise is loved because of the story.
I said before and I’ll say it again I LOVE FIGHTING GAME STORIES the roster of characters that have there own backgrounds and even relations to other characters is so interesting
There's a lot of great stories in BlazBlue that mostly go unspoken of how convoluted the plot can be. I do plan to cover more characters and plots in that series eventually. Thank you for featuring me in this vid!
In dead or alive 4 every character has a story arcade ladder. At the end of Zach’s ladder he talks about how a man must act even if it means his death. I was so taken by that line for some reason. He’s such a goofy dude but then he starts philosophizing about the nature of bravery.
I agree fighting game stories are what draw us in, I mean MKX and and others drew me in so did mk9 when I was younger and playing with a Xbox 360, also it helps flesh out characters and motives for what’s happening; also for me I prefer story over online multiplayer or anything else
For me the fighting game story moment that had the greatest impact on me was Tekken 8's final battle. I'm a newcomer to Tekken relatively speaking getting into the franchises story around 7 and my first exposure to the franchise was through Jin in Deathbattles Ryu vs Jin so when I started to explore the series more Jin became my magnet character because I knew the most about him. As I explored his story I've grown attached to his story as a good man with cursed blood and grew frustrated with how Tekken 6 effectively ruined him and Tekken 7 shafted him so Heihachi and Kazuya can fight. I had a lot of expectations for 8's story to not only make Jin the hero again but to do him justice. Tekken 8's main story has a lot of flaws but Jin's character arc blew me away as he starts the campaign holding on to his old convictions that his bloodline will only ever bring pain and every part of it including himself needs to die. His arc recontextualized Tekken 6 as Jin's desires is taking the easy way out he's going to die anyways as penance so what does it matter he's plunged the world into chaos and the flaws in that idea as all he really did was give Kazuya a platform to take the world for himself. His arc is about accepting his past his mistakes for what they were and striving to build a better world for true recompense its about learning to move on which contrasts Kazuya whose always living in the past. Tho I hated the Angel Jin and True Devil Kazuya stuff the fact that instead of a big dbz spectacle the true end of the game has Jin and Kazuya fight as men a battle to prove whose beliefs are stronger. And I had tears in my eyes when Jin declared that he wanted to live. It was great stuff and is why despite its flaw I still defend Tekken 8's story.
What do you mean a Better Fight would have Been Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima on the Roof of the Tekken Building having a Final Fight while the current 'King of Iron Fist' Tournament wraps up and it comes full circle with Jin defeating Devil Kazuya (with or Without Control of his Devil Gene without going Angel Jin) and knocks Kazuya off of the building?
@@mitchellalexander9162 That would be cool but I just think the game doing away with the Devil Gene atm worked really well. I would've been fine if it was just the superforms but I prefer the more grounded two fists and will of iron approach.
I’ll never forget the promising setup MKX left with Dark Raiden declaring Mortal Kombat against Outworld for Kotal Kahn’s treachery as well as the looming threat of the Netherrealm. So many different angles they could go. Instead they chose to abandon all of that to introduce a time wizard space baby and with the power of time travel. I wasn’t even that big of a fan of MKX but the potential for a great sequel was there and I was interested to see where things would go and how the characters and world would develop. Little did I know we’d end up with a multiverse
For my one fighting game moment. Honestly. The intro to Tekken 4. The chronography. The music. Its perfect. Though other than that. The final fight between Ragna and that pos Terumi. The build up to it. The brutally. And Ragna's sacrifice. Patrick Sikes brought one of my favourite characters to life. I honestly teared up after it.
My favorite moment in a fighting game story comes from The Subspace Emissary. It's the whole sequence starting from when Donkey Kong tears down the wall, causing that group to meet Pikachu and Samus in front of the Ancient Minister. Ganondork seizes control of the R.O.B. units to activate the Subspace Bombs. When the AM tries to fight back, Ganondorf has them light him on fire, laughing maniacally in the process. As the heroes struggle to stop the R.O.B. units from activating the Subspace Bombs, the AM is revealed to be R.O.B. and joins them in a Big Badass Battle Sequence where Brawl's version of the Battlefield theme plays. Afterwards, R.O.B. has the chance to say goodbye to some of his friends before being taken away by Captain Falcon, who's set up the Falcon Flyer to take the heroes out of the Bomb Factory.
If fighting games didn't have some sort of story or lore it would be hard to really get sucked into some of these characters. yes designs play a role but also who the character is.
Fighting game stories can be silly, but they DO matter. For me, the scene that sticks with me is Terry's ending in Fatal Fury Real Bout. In it, Terry defeats Geese once again like he did before. In his first encounter, Terry wanted to kill Geese as revenge for the death of his father and knocks Geese off of his own building. This is meant to be seen as triumphant since the big bad gets his comeuppance. But somehow, Geese managed to survive this. In Fatal Fury 3, Geese is back and challenges Terry to a fight on top of a burning building. Terry wins again and Geese disappears. In this moment, Terry has started to gain some kind of respect for Geese as well as a sort of rivalry with the kingpin. In Real Bout, Terry blasts Geese with a Power Geyser that sends him off of the tower once again. Geese barely manages to hang off of a ledge, but then loses his grip. Terry then grabs Geese's hand, saving his life. At this point, Geese could either accept the humiliation and be saved or take Terry with him to the afterlife like a sore loser. But instead, Geese lets go and happily falls to his death while laughing maniacally. This is a bitter sweet ending. Terry won, but he didn't want to kill Geese this time. He was hoping that maybe Geese would start turning his life around. But after this, Terry discovers that Geese has a son named Rock who is now an orphan like Terry was. Instead of letting Rock suffer as an orphan, Terry decides to adopt the young lad, train him in the ways of martial arts, and guide the boy in the right direction. I love the poetry of it all so much. Terry is such a cool and fun character that has some interesting depth to him. Despite being the son of his arch nemesis, Terry decides that it would be best for the boy to be raised right. It's like the polar opposite to what happens with Miles Edgeworth in Ace Attorney now that I think about it. Terry is one of my all time favorite characters in fiction. I main him in any game he shows up in, including Smash, I enjoy cosplaying as him, and I wrote a 120-paged script for a theoretical live action adaptation of Fatal Fury 1 as my graduating thesis. I got an A on it, btw. Giving Terry this interesting and complex situation where he ultimately does the right thing is such good character writing and is part of the reason as to why I love him so much. Also, if Geese is going to be DLC in City of the Wolves, it better be Nightmare Geese or a non-canonical/hypothetical event. He doesn't need to actually come back like Bison and Heihachi did.
Probably my favourite story moment came at mk9 involving Kung Lao. In the game when we first see Kung Lao he eagerly wants to prove he is Liu Kangs equal a similar trait that is in shaolin Monks (my first mk game), but comes out short he is the underdawg. When he gets the opportunity to prove himself I wanted to see him succeed and to prove not only to Raiden but himself that he has what it takes to be the hero and that he lives up to his ancestor name similar to what he did in shaolin monks. Even though moment was quickly taken away by Shao, that moment of him stepping up to the occasion was memorable to me.
My favorite character story is Cody from Final Fight and Street Fighter. He used to be just a dude fighting a gang in his city. Then he started to enjoy the fighting no matter what. When he was framed and arrested, he didn't bother seriously breaking out and proving his innocence because he feels he deserves it. Finally, his friend, Haggar, gave him the position of mayor (which is weird admittedly) so Cody will have the responsibility to protect his city.
I adore fighting game stories and lore, and especially how the characters interact with the world. Although people probably won't put it with a story mode but special intros are also a character's story and they show so much as well.
My favorite scene in a fighting game would have to be the final boss of Tidus' storyline in Final Fantasy Dissidia (psp). It is the perfect fanservice as it is not only just something fans would like, but resolves a key piece of the personal conflict between Tidus and his father in the original story which became overshadowed due to the greater conflict. Perhaps one might say to it's detriment, but it fits for the characters to be straightforward about their feelings in that scene, and because of that even people unfamiliar with the characters can understand perfectly why they are fighting and what it means to them. It makes you want to experience the build-up to reach this payoff.
4th snake on the real, getting tabmok99 on this video blew my mind. He and you got me through covid and seeing him here and his boat is pretty great man. Thanks for the video.
I also love little things that are alluded to in other games to Like in Soulcalibur 4 Cassandra's ending when she realizes Soulcalibur is just as bad as Soul Edge and snaps it in half after stabbing Soul Edge with it
My favorite is gonna alwasy be my boi Baraka. He went from just a demon, to a tragic but heroic figure in the newest timeline, the person who lost everything but kept his heart. His journey required two resets of the universe and I am happy to see where he ended up.
thanks for featuring so many incredible creators most of them i didnt know but its good to know you arent the only one out there who cares about this stuff and your not the only one who likes it being shaken up every now and again
The story I always remember is from the Adventure Mode in Super Smash Bros Melee. The secret cutscene where Luigi jumps on Mario’s head and you fight him instead always stood out to me. Even if there isn’t a deeper narrative, as the little brother it was super satisfying. It’s extra cool in retrospect because the cutscene only triggers if you finish the previous level with 2 as your last digit in seconds on the timer. A reference to Luigi being player 2 .
I just want to point out to people who still ask why we care about stories in fighting games. To me it's not so much the main overall plots, it's more so the characters' individual personalities, their own stories and where they go in a consistent fashion.
Thank you so much for this, we need to show this video to the studios in charge of our favorite franchises because they need to understand that story matters just as much as gameplay does. Story and gameplay don’t have to be mutually exclusive, a fighting game can have both and they don’t have to be lazy or stagnate the series for the sake of milking the status quo or appeasing competitive players who will throw a fit because their mains sat out one game. Have the characters, their stories, and relationships with other characters evolve beyond what they are and try something new otherwise people will get bored of the same song and dance over and over again.
My moment would be when Superman kills Shazam in Injustice 1. I still find that moment haunting. In a world before Omni-man and Homelander made their on screen debut, it was rough seeing superman be so brutal to a genuine hero and friend.
I mean, what’s the point of having a game about characters if the characters aren’t actually characters and there’s nothing interesting about them…like a story. At that point just make all the characters gray skin people with no backstory or identity. You know functions. Because selling a game on just mechanics is definitely gonna do well.
The reason art is a powerful tool is that we latch our own identity and experiences unto that art. And that art can come in many tools. It transcends the tools that were used to create it. This applies to games as well. You can choose to see it as just a bunch of code and that none of it is real (I did for a while and it sucked), or you can embrace ideas in fiction that you feel an attachment to. Characters that (wether they are fictional or were written by a singular person) you find cool or wanna be like. This was what made superheroes appealing a century ago. They were either inspiring (Superman, Batman, Captain America) or relatable to us (Spider-Man). After all, emotions and ideas transcend the sources that created them once we start caring about them. That's why fanart and fanfiction exists at all. It became something bigger to us.
Remember when - people were mad that X-Men not being a part of MVCI roster? - Harada saying design is important when making a character? Now, I wanna ask the people who went "no story/lore, want gameplay" to tell me why the chose to play female with big racks when she's low tier
Glad I am not the only one that enjoyed SCV story mode, despite its shortcomings. The whole arc between Pyrrha and Patroklos was great. And it was a cool way to introduce a different variant for both characters, as well as making the final boss fight being something outside from the expected Nightmare or Inferno.
So I wanna talk about my favourite scene from a fighting game story. Its from the persona 4 arena manga its the scene where Yosuke comforts Labrys after her shadow is defeated. Labrys feels lost she thinks her existence will be nothing but pain, then Yosuke tells Labrys about Saki he tells her that she can accomplish anything with the help from your friends. Labrys denies this she is a robot and a weapon how can she have friends? , Yosuke tells her "Are you saying we can't be friends?". Labrys then accepts Yosuke as a friend. Yosuke as a character is controversial he is either loved or despised. Yosuke is seen in Inaba as the average, ordinary teenager, the good for nothing guy and yet this good for nothing guy became the hero and saved the girl.
Stories help us overcome hardships in real life. By seeing beloved characters go through hell and back for what they believe in, we see that there is meaning behind the tests and tragedies life throws our way. They help us better ourselves and those around us, and it's frustrating that many fighting game developers seem to forget that. This is why Tekken 4 stood out to me as I grew older - it taught lessons about remaining humble and true to yourself in the face of success, and not letting hatred define you. It hits just as hard as the countless Marvel, DC, and anime stories I grew up loving.
My favourite moment in a fighting game is Hilde's ending in SC 4, where she offers Siegfried, a man who's life has been a nightmare (see what I did there?) and who suffered the weight of his sins on his conscience, forgivness. It's a touching moment that also contributed to me liking Hilde a lot as a character. I miss characters being noble and honorable in fiction, it seems lke not so long ago where that the default for protagonists
Dead or Alive 2 and Ultimate have really good stories for individual characters similar to Tekken 4 and MK Deception. I miss this in modern fighting games.
In fighting games with a campaign, you will spend most of your time watching cutscenes and playing a maximum of 10 minutes per fight. IT IS LOGICAL THAT THE STORY MATTERS, it's like saying that the story doesn't matter in mgs
Amazing video! I haven't finished it yet, so idk if anyone talked about it, but my personal favorite story moment in any fighting game is in Guilty Gear Strive's story mode when Ky goes to face off against I-No in her god form. Ky is a character, who throughout the entire series up to this point, has consistently been marred by his insecurities over whether or not what he is doing is right and just, and that moment is the culmination of all of him finally being able to dispel all of his fears, because in that moment he knows he is doing the right thing. So he goes forth, the only character in the entire Guilty Gear universe to witness I-No's ascension and not shed a tear, to fight and for all he knows die, to save everyone else, because that is the right thing to do. He was the first to go, to make the potential sacrifice, because that is what a leader does. "Only a god, huh?" Runner up is A.B.A's true arcade ending in the same game.
For me... It was King of Fighters XI. Because that game not only shook up the roster but made the son of the most iconic rat bastard villain of the series, Rugal Bernstein, into a face. And essentially a pseudo protag of the Tales of Ash saga. I genuinely love that. That character is one of my GOATS. Big ups to SNK. Bring back Adelheid pls.
Mortal Kombat 9 was my intro to the story mode culture & 2010 Fighting games. Vman's gameplay complimented the immersion. Became a fan of these 2 sections & would say that TEKKEN 7's Hei Vs. Kazuya trailer was my reintroduction to the story since I was too young to appreciate TK3. (Also watched MainManSWE & learned about Kazuya's character) As a former T7 player & Josie player, character narrative is key as you'll realize that part of a character's reputation comes from the first impression. Having a competent story enhances this viewpoint. I only viewed her for the gameplay, but the COVID era has diversified my content on her character execution/application since then. Lore matters.
I don’t know if it counts as a Fighting Game, because of how different it plays compared to most Fighting Games… but one of my favorite story moments in a fighting game was the ending to Dissidia Final Fantasy. Seeing each of the main protagonists say goodbye to one another while still referencing a moment from the first ten numbered entries, down to the Final Fantasy theme playing at the end gave me a smile. It felt like the end of an era, and how far the FF Games has become. Which makes a lot of sense because the first Dissidia was supposed to be like THE game to celebrate Final Fantasy’s 20th anniversary (Even though it came out a year, after the 20th anniversary).
Everytime ppl say story doesn't matter, all it comes to mind is Scorpion, he could become the top 1 best character of mk1 and yet a good amount of fans would still dislike Hanzo getting his whole life stolen by Kuai Liang
Amazing video here. Fighting games does need the respect they deserve when it comes to story. When it comes to my personal favorite, I can really take anything from Guilty Gear but in this case, I will talk about Faust. Once a humble doctor with a perfect track record becomes insane after a little girl dies during his operation, becomes a notorious serial killer who thinks he is helping the other by “operating on them” but in reality is murdering them. Very twisted stuff but one fateful night, a half gear name Testament bailed him out of prison to enter the Holy Order Selection Tournament. During the tournament (probably while fighting May if the Guilty Gear series Story Digest is seen to be believed and probably explains her fear of bold people from that point forward), he ends up hearing the voice of the dead girl from that operation telling him that it wasn’t his fault and it was her time to go. Now you can interpret this as him actually hearing the ghost of the little girl telling him this or this being all in his head, regardless, he gets a mental breakdown and leaves the premises, never to be heard from again, however, we all know his true fate. He comes the godlike healer that helps anyone in the time of need name Faust. Trying to atone for his past sins as the notorious Dr. Baldhead, he wants to help as much people as possible, even to the experience of his own health.
Not gonna lie, when yani said that rain's voice sounds"bubbly", immediately imagined him talking just like how Alan Oppenheimer does merman(m.o.t.u.)and seaspray(transformers)!😂
My favorite MK game is UMK3 because of the introduction of my favorite MK character: Stryker. He got me with his game backstory, he was a regular human that was the lonely survivor of the soulnado among millions and without anything magical or supernatural on him. I realized anyone, if being able to fight, could be a MK character.
Skullgirls a lot of entertaining endings. I believe my favorite is Squidly's ending for how it gave closure to her character and Painwheel's for how mysterious and meaningful. I am honestly difficulty deciding which ending is better.
For me is the entire Konquest mode in MK was great! is so deep and interesting, the lore, the realms and see this lore barely touched or totally erased in some part in the NR games is pretty sad.
20:43 The thing I don't like about Marvel vs. Capcom endings is that I only get one ending, and the ending is determined on the last fighter used to kill the final boss. i wished Capcom gave us three endings to watch in a row to make it look like how the whole team ended up after the fight.
Im invested to the Tekken story sincerely since Tekken 2. Don't you dare tell me Story DOESN'T matter. It matters to me. It's the reason I stayed with this franchise for 30 years!!!!
One of my favourite videos on TH-cam is called “Street fighter X Tekken the devil within” I find it very entertaining especially when Kazuya starts adapting😭 they made him look so menacing fr😭😭
As much as Khaos Reigns's story missed the mark, it doesn't change the fact that Mortal Kombat as a story has been SO fun to watch over these past few years.
My favorite guest characters to this day are Negan in T7, Robocop in mk11, and the Star Wars characters in Soul Cal 4 especially Starkiller. Ill always love a good guest character over some returning character that should be in base game
The main reason I cared about MK in the first place is because of the Lore and the Story, there is no excuse for devs to put no effort in the story, I mean look at Tekken right now, 90% of the roster don't matter while the Mishimas are the only people that matter.
@@vikingfromnorth45 Oh yay, TWO CHARACTERS THAT WILL GO BACK TO NOT MATTERING AT THE END OF THE STORY TO HYPE UP ONE OF THE 3 MAIN MISHIMAS.... Wack...
Guilty Gear Strives ending is one of my favorite moments in not just fighting games, but arguably any games that I've played. Seeing mah boi Sol finally get his happy ending with wife.
Most SNK Games had a great story. Capcom finally caught up, during Street Fighter 4. Guilty Gear and BlazBlue always had phenomenal stories. Fighting Game Stories is why Terry Bogard is my Childhood Hero.
The way Snake expresses not wanting to see concepts repeated all over and disliking characters and settings that are unable to develop with time makes me feel like Guilty Gear would probably be right up his alley if he ever manages to catch up on all the lore to understand everything that's happening. They even have dead characters come back in interesting ways that still retain consequences from their death, like Zato and Bedman.
Even if story doesn't matter, that still doesn't change that character matters. If you remove the entirety of a character's arc you lose a large part of what they are. And characters are a large selling point of all fighting games.
Correction armor king was mentoring the second king when he was murdered by mardock . First armor king was teaching kings pupil. Basically with the two kings and two armor kings. It’s basically a combination like the storey of the creed movies crossed with the first three rocky movies slash the origin of the second subzero. Aka the two armor kings our blood related there brothers. King 1 and king 2 our not related by blood . But king one is rocky then armor was Mickey and Apollo comebined kind of relation and we’re talking Apollo after rocky 2 after the rematch.
Let's be honest for a second, anyone who tries to say "the story to anything doesn't matter because of what genre it's in" is an idiot. Just because of the genre it's in doesn't mean the story doesn't matter. If it didn't matter then why are we interested in it then? What would be the point of having characters? Why would there be a story if it didn't matter? The answer is obvious, *THE STORY DOES MATTER*
While Dead or Alive 6 story is pretty bad, I love that moment when Ayane falls and sends out 2 butterflies, one for Hayate and the other for Kasumi. It honestly feels like they could potentially become a family again.
A good example that the story matters in fighting games is Mortal Kombat 1. They changed the story (again) of the characters, and as a result I have little to no interest in the game. And I'm not saying that all the changes in the characters were bad, but they don't have the same weight that the original stories have. Yes, I'm playing Scorpion but it's not Hanzo Hasashi with his story. I'm playing Havik, but it's not the chaos priest (I didn't play Khaos Reigns) And the new Cyrax doesn't say anything to me, she is not Felix Sam Kaweeson, a man who struggles with his humanity after being transformed into a literal killing machine ( again I didn't play Khaos Reigns but thats the feeling I have with the new designs for Cyrax and Sektor).
@1:55- Her take on Tekken is exactly how I feel. Personally, Paul's ending in that game was the one that I felt was the best one. But the series has honestly to me never hit the same peak since 4 story wise. Tekken 8 had a chance to do so, and then Heihachi's survival had to be pulled out of someone's ass. Will you cover that, Snake? The revelation on how he actually survived is one of the dumbest rectons I've ever seen.
You want to know why? Because devs don't care. I don't know if that's because team isn't the same, but Harada with Murray were joking, that they had to make any sense of Tekken story. Fuckin Tekken. Which is known within fighting games for its ongoing story. They don't care, that why Heihachi (which I have no problem to came back) is in the story, even if he shouldn't be. They destroyed entire T7 story. I was fan of it, because it was really good ending for Kazuya vs Heihachi. Something, what started all of it. And T8 was that for Jin and Kaz. But no. Fuck all of that. Fuck real writers. I was probably one of the least impressed players with story. Those dialogues... Like they were written by a child. Still, Kazuya vs Jin might be my favourite video game fight ever. It was that good, because they used past events through that. But now? I think they will ruin that.
Good presentation and appealing character designs are a given when trying to get people in the door. However, story is what'll get people invested. Get them connected. Make them give a shit about WTF they're looking at and playing, which in a niche genre like FGs is imperative, especially if it's part of a $60-$70 price tag. Without it, these characters are nothing more than glorified action figures.
Fighting game stories matter. I hate when people say otherwise
The only people that say that videogame stories don’t matter are the sweats that only ever play competitively online and rage about the meta

You used story's as in possessive, not stories as in plural.
They have great and memorable moments. Unfortunately, those moments are squished in between bad execution of story telling.
I just wish they would bring back that classic mysterious mystical ninja vibe mk used to have. It feels like nrs is trying to make mortal kombat more like the mcu with blood, but I prefer the old vibe mk had, it was a big part of my childhood lol
I like how the story in the Blazblue if you go back and play the previous games you can see connections and forshadowing.
Awesome video featuring a bunch of awesome creators. Well done everyone XD

People say fighting game stories don't matter then get pissed at devs when they say characters are only functions. PICK ONE!
Never heard that argument
EXAAACTLY! 🎉😊
@@CYB3R2K It's also not in the right context. It's from Marvel Capcom Infinite when people were asking why some characters were in the game while others weren't. Capcom basically said "Hey, the character you want is _technically_ in the game! This one here does a lot of the same stuff!" (that's where the whole "functions" thing comes from) while somehow not realizing that there are a lot of minute details that dictated how the character _felt to play._
So it was a _gameplay complaint voiced through the roster,_ not because of any story.
@@Gamersgoinblind Then you have Smash Melee players, who really do see characters as just functions.
That was more than a statue, it was a vision of his mother Jun
Right after he decided to spare Heihachi, he said, "You better thank my mother, Jun Kazama" and flies away
@@sonicanvaspost6867 that too. Was going based on memory
A lot of people don't truly understand what happened in Tekken 6. Jin learned of a prophecy and forced himself to be a asshole to the world to make that prophecy happen immediately and since he thought he was gonna die for it. He didn't care about his impressions in the world just that he could save it and die in the process.
@@FlyXcur in which...he didn't. And Azazel, since the real entity was the orb, it can't be killed.
The amount of people who say “story doesn’t matter in fighting games” is nuts, if devs didn’t think story wasn’t important then why did they take the time to create said story?
Marketing. Which in my opinion is the best reason that it shows how it doesn't matter. These aren't passion projects, they're products.

Find it baffling this way and insane and what perspective do they have in the first place? Oh they just want the game and be the player and that’s it? They’re just alienating why they’re franchise is loved because of the story.
Pantsing method. If the flow is broken, then it's just a crumpled paper.
My honest reaction when multiverse 🤑 ( I just don't care anymore (
For my one fighting game moment.
The whole reason I got into Mortal Kombat was because of the story.
Which of the 3 😂

It all went downhill since Mk11 in terms of story
The whole reason I started playing Mortal Kombat was because I saw a clip of Hanzo's chapter in MKX and got intrigued by his past.
Gitai knocked it out of the park. I'll be sure to check out his channel. Thanks for cobbling up all this together, Snake
Thanks.
Awesome, love that Def Jam was mentioned!
I also love little things that are alluded to in other games to
Like in Soulcalibur 4 Cassandra's ending when she realizes Soulcalibur is just as
bad as Soul Edge and snaps it in half after stabbing Soul Edge with it
Peak video, I think my favorite segment was the one covering Rambo in MK11, it's definitely a highlight of the many endings in that game.
My favorite is gonna alwasy be my boi Baraka. He went from just a demon, to a tragic but heroic figure in the newest timeline, the person who lost everything but kept his heart. His journey required two resets of the universe and I am happy to see where he ended up.
Love the video
I hope there's a part too with more varied fighting games
I'd love it too.
thanks for featuring so many incredible creators most of them i didnt know but its good to know you arent the only one out there who cares about this stuff and your not the only one who likes it being shaken up every now and again
Remember when
- people were mad that X-Men not being a part of MVCI roster?
- Harada saying design is important when making a character?
Now, I wanna ask the people who went "no story/lore, want gameplay" to tell me why the chose to play female with big racks when she's low tier
Blazblue has some very confusing story beats but I won’t lie when I say that it has some of the most heartwarming and hype moments
Also I ship Yosuke with Labrys fight me.
@@ashyflameWhy? You're right. As far as I'm concerned, Labrys is Yosuke's Chidori
@@connorharnage6697 Well its the same reason why people ship the persona 3 protagonist with Aigis.
I read somewhere on a blog that it's the "player's imagination" that matters the most regarding story in video games.
If these individuals say stories don't matter then lore doesn't matter, background info doesn't matter etc

Tekken 4 was so good! BR knows what’s up
Dead or Alive 2 and Ultimate have really good stories for individual characters similar to Tekken 4 and MK Deception. I miss this in modern fighting games.
Helena's has always been the most compelling to me
In fighting games with a campaign, you will spend most of your time watching cutscenes and playing a maximum of 10 minutes per fight.
"Only a god, huh?"
Runner up is A.B.A's true arcade ending in the same game.
26:47 real talk though that temple fight in MK1 was sick as hell in both story and gameplay
What a wonderful video. Proud to be game that loves a great story

The writers of MK1 Khaos reigns need to watch this
Mortal Kombat 9 was my intro to the story mode culture & 2010 Fighting games. Vman's gameplay complimented the immersion.
Became a fan of these 2 sections & would say that TEKKEN 7's Hei Vs. Kazuya trailer was my reintroduction to the story since I was too young to appreciate TK3. (Also watched MainManSWE & learned about Kazuya's character)
As a former T7 player & Josie player, character narrative is key as you'll realize that part of a character's reputation comes from the first impression.
Nice seeing Gitai and Godzilla Mendoza here.

If the story didn't matter, it wouldn't be there. I wouldn't give two shits about Mortal Kombat if it weren't for the story.
Story matters to fighting games 🔥
Skullgirls a lot of entertaining endings. I believe my favorite is Squidly's ending for how it gave closure to her character and Painwheel's for how mysterious and meaningful. I am honestly difficulty deciding which ending is better.
For me is the entire Konquest mode in MK was great! is so deep and interesting, the lore, the realms and see this lore barely touched or totally erased in some part in the NR games is pretty sad.
That was great to watch, thanks!

Great video, well done pulling this one together Snake
The way Snake expresses not wanting to see concepts repeated all over and disliking characters and settings that are unable to develop with time makes me feel like Guilty Gear would probably be right up his alley if he ever manages to catch up on all the lore to understand everything that's happening. They even have dead characters come back in interesting ways that still retain consequences from their death, like Zato and Bedman.
Was waiting for the Guilty Gear mention happy to see other people acknowledge just how good it actually is
Idk man Faust keeps falling back into insanity over and over again. Right when you think he's gonna recover he sinks again.
Even if story doesn't matter, that still doesn't change that character matters. If you remove the entirety of a character's arc you lose a large part of what they are. And characters are a large selling point of all fighting games.
Awesome video. Glad to be a part of this project. I might get back in the horse because of this.
The Gizou Gitai section was so goooood
Fighting game story doesn't matter huh?
One word....Blazblue
When Armor king died that when shit got real in tekken
A good example that the story matters in fighting games is Mortal Kombat 1. They changed the story (again) of the characters, and as a result I have little to no interest in the game.
And I'm not saying that all the changes in the characters were bad, but they don't have the same weight that the original stories have.
Yes, I'm playing Scorpion but it's not Hanzo Hasashi with his story.
I'm playing Havik, but it's not the chaos priest (I didn't play Khaos Reigns)
And the new Cyrax doesn't say anything to me, she is not Felix Sam Kaweeson, a man who struggles with his humanity after being transformed into a literal killing machine ( again I didn't play Khaos Reigns but thats the feeling I have with the new designs for Cyrax and Sektor).
What a cool video. I did not know many of the stories
4:46 4 was the peak of Tekken's story for me.
I will always say soul calibur had the potential to have the most compelling story
People need to realize that one John Carmack quote is fucking outdated at this point in video games
Heck, if I’m remembering correctly; even Carmack himself agrees his quote is outdated.
Yoooo Gizou Gitai! I love his tekken videos!
