"Simple living"? I don't think so. Try living in a log cabin with no electricity and get your water from a rain catch or well. As for economy of space and cozy spaces, they do it better in Japan.
The chateau has come a long way in a few years and it looks simply marvelous! It has a nice feel to it. Good luck with the overhead light. About two years ago, Sharon and I met up with you and some of your friends at a bar in Montmartre. We'd mentioned that we were moving to Spain, and here we are as of 7 months ago and living with children-in-laws in a small house in the small town of El Casar, about 30 minutes northeast of Madrid. We're fortunate to have each other to spend time with, even if I'm the only one that doesn't speak Spanish (yet). Glad to know you're still well and sane. Now go wash your hands.
I'm glad you're settled and have someone to weather this situation with. Stay safe down there and hopefully you can return to the leisurely Spanish lifestyle without TOO much delay =)
Jay put a piece of paper or cloth in between the ceiling light and your cloud bed. Then you will get reflected or diffused light instead of blinding white “ in your face” light. Simple tape or duct tape can suspend this diffuser temporarily until you figure out the best material and shape to achieve the desired resultant lighting. Try making a box and taping the center of each of the four sides to the side of the ceiling light fixture. Leave space for heat to escape the fixture. Then cut out flaps in the sides of the box to direct light around you. Think of it as functional art. The color of the insides of the box will tone the reflected light- use it!
J. Bugz, I get it. Many moons ago when we were hippies in the woods in a cabin, I reinstated the pot d’ chambre. We had an outhouse, it had snowed and I was pregnant-long story. However, should you decide such a mini space could work and you want a roommate, holler at me.
I love your artwork, your lighting, and the stars. Cover the bright ceiling light with colored paper. Put a mirror directly opposite your window and it will appear to be a second window. Put small mirrors on the side walls near your window and you will be able to see more of the outside. Where I am, we can still go for walks outside if we stay away from each other. I hope you can get outside in the sun to get some vitamin D.
Well put together chateau! Could you put a small clamp on light on the railing for the bed up top? I can't abide overhead lights either! Also I have the same tiny shower prob as you. I just double the shower curtain on the rings so no messing around cutting the curtain. Stay safe and healthy and enjoy your abode sir.
I really wanted to build a storage shelf off the end for water bottles etc, but it'll have to wait. Clipping on a light sounds like a great idea (as does double-curtaining). Stay safe out there too!
Nice use of space, I would add square mirror's under your bed, above your couch also add clear twinkle lights around the bed, start wrapping philodendron vines around the lights cord. Watch how fast your plant will grow. The mirror will reflect the light. Wait until christmas when the lights are better price.
This apartment is a definite step up from what it used to look like. I remember you were sleeping on a mattress on the floor. You have done a great job decorating. It does look really cozy. That glass wall at the top of the shower was a brilliant idea and it looks very chic. Thankfully you have a really nice bathroom and you are so fortunate to have a portable washer. That would be horrible if you had to try and get out to the laundromat with what is going on. I especially love the very large window. Mirrors strategically placed could give the feeling of more space and also bring in more light. Keep your spirits up and stay safe.
WOW, brilliant design work!!!! If I get to stay an extra year I will try doing the same heightened bed to make room for a living room technique you used. SUPER efficient!
Thanks. I’ve been waiting for this tour with bated breath and now I can finally breathe normally again. In all seriousness you’ve done a great job with a very small space.
I saw a video of an apartment in New York and that size apartment went for $1400 a month. Same size as yours. Only exception was the bathroom and shower were out in the hall.
Very nice space I love all the different lighting. Also love the loft and storage stairs. And your coffee sweat shirt is awesome. I just would need my own bathroom in the space. Daily cleaning toilet area plus locking room door and toilet door every time you had to go. Deal breaker. But
Your place looks so much more comfortable than a year ago. It's looking great. How do manage daily meals, especially during quarantine, with so little space for food storage and cooking? Ordering out a lot?
You've done an excellent job on that space. I also live in a 13m2 apartment in Paris and it really is all about using the space as efficiently as possible.
I may have missed it, but can you share some info on your loft bed? I'm moving to a studio with high ceilings soon and you have the EXACT setup that I'm trying to accomplish - a lofted bed with stairs (*not* a ladder) and enough headspace for a couch underneath. So far, I haven't found anything that would work and I probably don't have the budget to have something custom made.
Might be late, but if you haven't solved the issue already, an idea for that overly bright light above the bed, is to maybe stick a piece of darker coloured fabric on it (with either glue or velcro) to create a dimmer coloured glow. Using velcro, you could even constantly change the fabric circles to different colours.
I'm glad you're safe and keeping busy. I was checking in yesterday to see if you uploaded new videos. I like the small space, and all the creative ways people make it comfy. My husband and I live in a small room and have configured it to fit a king-size bed, but made sure to make multiple uses for the rest of the furniture, especially our book collection. Glad you are well, the States are a hot mess right now so finding your video helped. Best- TGT
You can try to put your fan near on the table and blow the cool air from bottom to the loft direction, for the power cord extension, you can get use of 2 cable tie and one wall hook to dangle it on the wall next to your bed. IMO.
You really made it work for the small space you have. And the pov made it interesting. It does look cozy. There might be like some sort of shade for ceiling lights you can do for the one above your bed.
Nice! I have a shower too small for a regular shower curtain, but I like it that way. The shower is not too small and I get 2 shower curtains for the price of one. The 2nd half is folded and put up in the linen closet waiting to replace the first half when I am ready to throw it out. I used the wraps to mount a power strip to husband's hospital bed. Works great. I will admit that I never considered using underwear to hold it in place. Very creative! I suspect that watching you put the Lego Arch d' Triumphe(sic) together might be akin to watching paint dry, I wouldn't mind seeing the occasional update or if you are a Lego Wiz and can do it in half a day then a time lapse video would be fun. Actually, a time lapse of each sitting and working on it to include in your vlogs would be great!
Random suggestion but did you know that Command Strips also sells adhesive mini shelves? They’re great (and would resolve the whole rolled-up underwear fire hazard situation) 🤭
Thanks for your tour! I agree with a previous poster---mirrors. I've heard that in some places like Amsterdam etc in the 17 and 1800s a smallish mirror on an adjustable armature was placed next to the window. More light could be directed into the room and the person seated in the room could also see more of the street life....Also, small mirrors in frames opposite the window at the far end might draw more light in and 'expand' the space. You've done a super job with the amount of space you have.
@@nisacornforth2740 I know it seems cute and funny at first, but it's really really nothing like prison and what people go through in there, especially countries like the US with unsanitary and dangerous conditions. In our own tiny apartments even in quarantine, although simple it's very comfortable and luxurious to our own specifications, and we have privacy and safety. I even have a bread maker, mini oven, instruments, a nice window, plants, cozy lighting, comfy bed, computer and stuff, cook and sleep when I want, play games, talk to friends and family, my own clean shower and toilet, and I can go out on my bike to get stuff when needed, I have masks, sanitizer.. it's *nothing* like prison.
That's what I call utilizing space to the max. It's amazing how much thought and time you have put your apartment to the point that creates an illusion of having a huge space when is not there. It looks awesome and very cozy. Congrats.
Glad you have a little wall to keep from falling into the shower. That would be a bummer. I have lived in 19th century hotels, with toilet down the hall. But the shower was also down the hall. So I couldn't fall into it.
Regarding the bright white light, you can hang fabric across the ceiling and it creates a shade. Use a fabric you love, you have lots of patterns in your space so maybe something that jives with those.
Interesting, there is no toilet inside, but there is a bidet, I guess that doubles as a urinal? Also that narrow washing machine is perfect for that space
Thanks for the video, Jay. I really enjoyed it! I appreciated seeing your apartment. Here in the US, we're very spoiled with large spaces. I like seeing how you decorate your cozy space and I love that you call your loft The Cloud! Stay safe and healthy!
Not sure if someone already commented on this idea, I just saw this video last night: The light fixture above the bed which you hate (😂): You can dim it. Put a sheer cloth and velcro it. The light will emit a light glow.
I find that my spotlights in my kitchen are way too bright. Just found out about "Dimming Sheets" I can buy at amazon which I can cut to size ($8.99). I'm on it! Cheaper than buying spotlights with dimmer remote control.😏
Love it! Such a great use of the space!! How well the sofa fits is deeply satisfying! I used to live in 12sqm in Sydney so I fully appreciate how much work went into your chateau!! If I may make a suggestion, I notice there is nothing above your front door, if you add a mirror it would bounce the light from your current window & you could frame it out so it looks like a second window.
Get an Instant Pot. During Covid Times, I took that to the Hotel Lodge in Sequoia National Forest (yes, there was restaurant food but that would require more contact). Instant Pot meant super fast meals and easy clean up.
Hi Jay- glad you’re doing well. I just wanted to come on here and say that I sometimes watch TH-cam via Apple tv and then have to pull the video on my phone to like it. Because I want to say thank you and I think it’s important to say that. (There might be a way to do this on tv but I guess I don’t know- lol). What I’m trying to say that most people would not be willing to share their small space with others on YT but I want to applaud you for showing us around your space. I think it looks amazing and the fact that you’re happy even in a small space - it just goes without saying- your level of gratitude to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. So thank you. 😉
Aw, thanks for making the effort Shami! I really appreciate it =) And I'm happy to share it. It's been a blessing to me in many ways so I'm lucky that I can share that blessing in my own way
Really like the space. Can you give information on the loft? Size? Height? Is it custom made or did you purchase it somewhere? How sturdy is it? What about the stairs? Thanks for sharing!
I got it from espace loggia here in Paris - it's French made, stands just under 2m tall, and is a full sized bed that's plenty sturdy for two. The stairs and desk came with =D I'll have to include that information in the "final" video for sure. Thanks for asking!
I can't help but think that if you have 1-2 guests stay over, that with the 3 of you sleeping, you'll all run the risk of suffocating due to lack of air, lol. Love how you have made this chateau your own. It's inspiring.
So cosy! And home-ey, which you need right now. Eventually, you could rig up some slide out shelves to use as extra surfaces, under the desk, and under the cloud. Stay sane in there!
I’m not sure if someone else has already suggested it, but could you modify your drying rack to be a simple pulley system where you can hoist it up into your high ceiling out of the way. As you say it’s hotter in the upper part of the room also, so it would be a good drying spot.
Hi Jay. You had told us that your nice landlady was not charging you rent snd had paid for washing machine and some things. Has that changed? Am I wrong?
Really into watching how others are coping with confinement. Thx for the tour of your space. You have done a great job of making all areas of your space useful. More! More!
For the ceiling light, cover it with rice paper, amazon has a product that doesn't use glue, I put it on windows for privacy. If you can get a dimmer switch installed, that might work, it depends on the bulb the fixture uses. Good luck

Same thing almost...
Prisoners have bigger cells than this guy.
Now that would be an awesome video.
😂
for your light up stairs , how about having a page of parchment cut to size and stick in place ? it would cut down the blinding bit of it .
Definitely gotta do something about it
4 or 5 small command hooks. Gauze material cut large enough to hang from loops or grommets. Interchangeable pieces to change out the color.
Love what you did with the space!
That's what I call utilizing space to the max. It's amazing how much thought and time you have put your apartment to the point that creates an illusion of having a huge space when is not there. It looks awesome and very cozy. Congrats.
Thanks! I've put a ton of thought into it - still thinking on some more upgrades too ;D
Glad you have a little wall to keep from falling into the shower. That would be a bummer. I have lived in 19th century hotels, with toilet down the hall. But the shower was also down the hall. So I couldn't fall into it.
Fall-proofing the shower was an important step ha
I have one of those star lights...never thought of having it that low! Love!
It was a great addition
Excellent tour ... stay safe!
How about adding some scent candles.... lavender smells good and is relaxing. Thanks for this video.
Lots of good scents to go around =)
Thanks for the video, Jay. I really enjoyed it! I appreciated seeing your apartment. Here in the US, we're very spoiled with large spaces. I like seeing how you decorate your cozy space and I love that you call your loft The Cloud!
Stay safe and healthy!
It's a cozy cloud indeed =D
I'm amazed that you're even able to get good shots of the stuff in your apartment when the apartment itself is so small
Takes some fenagling haha
Not sure if someone already commented on this idea, I just saw this video last night: The light fixture above the bed which you hate (😂):
You can dim it.
Put a sheer cloth and velcro it.
The light will emit a light glow.
Yeah, gotta get on that - it is nice when I need to really light the place up entirely but otherwise it renders the light useless ha
This space is very cool, congratulations, Nice video
Get an Instant Pot. During Covid Times, I took that to the Hotel Lodge in Sequoia National Forest (yes, there was restaurant food but that would require more contact). Instant Pot meant super fast meals and easy clean up.
👍👍
It's been a blessing to me in many ways so I'm lucky that I can share that blessing in my own way
It is looking so nice in there now. Great work
Thanks! Can you imagine quarantine the way it used to be?🤯
Love the art work in your apt.
You’ve made it cosy, functional, and really stylish.
Thanks! I'm really happy with it =)
Really like the space.
@@JaySwanson Thanks!
Nice setup!
Thanks!
Looks lovely. Why not buy a remote control bulb for the bed light. They change colours too.
Yay, a Jay video!!! It must have been challenging to get those angles/shots it that space, love how it turned out.
Very! But worth the effort =D Thanks!
You're so creative Jay!
Oh thank you!
Definitely want to organize my lighting and equipment storage!
Just a ideal.... Maybe you could paint the light covering over you bed with heat resistant paint to tone the brightness down.
Am I wrong?
She paid to have it installed, yeah!
Keep safe Jay. Thinking of you.
Thanks! You stay safe as well =D
@@JaySwanson day 5 of total lockdown... Keep motivated
Sly ..San Antonio Texas ,very cool vid Jay shall watch all ur videos hopping to visit Pairs on my way to Rome 2022
Thanks!
Love the stairs. I hate the loft ladders.
The stairs rule
It's a small space but such a beautiful space!!
I love it! =D
Really into watching how others are coping with confinement. Thx for the tour of your space. You have done a great job of making all areas of your space useful. More! More!
Thanks! I've really enjoyed making it into what it is now
For the ceiling light, cover it with rice paper, amazon has a product that doesn't use glue, I put it on windows for privacy. If you can get a dimmer switch installed, that might work, it depends on the bulb the fixture uses. Good luck
Nice to know you’re more comfortable in your apt now that you’re quarantined. Have you heard anything about how long your quarantine is projected to last?
April 15th officially - realistically, much longer probably
Jay Swanson, most likely. Guess you heard that POTUS extended our “quarantine” through April 30 on Sunday.
