  • I Investigated KENYAN INDIANS In Kisumu City: What Really Makes Them Insanely Rich?
For many generations, the Indian Community has played a crucial role in shaping the economy and culture of Kenya. From their early years of the railway construction to becoming key players in trade and business.
In this vlog I'll be exploring how their presence in Kisumu has influenced the city's economy.
Bug thanks to ‪@hudsonorina‬ for taking me around

Indians normally hire their own people, the blacks are paid low wage. They tend to take over all businesses everywhere they go. Another problem is they tend to be inconsiderate. This is not to say all Indians are like that but majority want to control economy and suppress black people's businesses, jobs and services. I come in peace, no offence here.

Indians in Kisumu have little to do with Amin.
Milimani, Ngara, Parklands were Indian settlement immediately after independence. Infact, first Indians who built the railway were settled at Mumias, they refused and prefered Kisumu. I had Indians in my old school Kisumu Boys. Actually Kisumu Boys was initially called Lake Asian school specifically started in 1947 for Indians. By 1978 KB had 90%Indian population and staff.

@@eugeneseko4031 They were a privileged lot since they were graded as second-class citizens by the colonial administration. This started them off much better than the Africans. As a kid I was told of how they would monopolize business by Indian wholesalers lying to African traders that the stock is out and only supplying the Indian traders with the goods. In Kisumu other tribes' business were destroyed and those communities chased out of Kisumu during ethnic violence. Kisumu just got it current level of development due to Kibaki and Uhuru Administration efforts. now consider a well financed mass migration of them Indians settling in Kisumu all at once. Why did amin chase them? This doesn't look they having a superior business acumen than the Africans. I' can almost say the same for the Somalian's. The sugar industry there has been destroyed due to corruption and mismanagement though the other day something seem to have been done about it.

This is the story of Sale (as in English word sale).
When Indians were threatened with deportation by Amin, most of them put their businesses for sale. This meant that every shop had a poster indicating that the business together with the premises was being advertised for sale. It is rumoured that to when Amin came across these signs he confused it to mean someone's name. He wondered how one person named 'Sale' could own all these shops. Out of jealousy, that is how or why he ordered for their confiscation to be handed to Ugandans who were mostly his cronies as he kicked Indians out of the country. This is the story of Sale (as in English word sale) as was narrated in Kenya.

The space the Indians occupy in Kenya is one that they created themselves and even if they left the locals would not replicate their success, as the case was in Uganda.

I agree that Kenyan Indians built businesses from the ground up. They had an advantage of picking from where the white man left off. They got leases to prime land for a song. As the businesses dwindle and they move to the west, they sell these leases for huge amounts. We can't completely say there was no advantage even though they are genuinely hard working

That story about Indians being chased from Uganda is questionable. Most Indians immigrated to Kenya in 1895 at the creation of the British East African Protectorate. Vasco Da Gama also recorded encountering Indians along the coast of East Africa in the 15th Century in Malindi. Bank of India existed in Kisumu in 1913 before Idi Amin. The Siri Guru Singh Saba Temple was built in Kisumu in 1913. We have had Indians living in Kendu Bay from time immemorial. Kisii town as well -A Jiwa Shamji (Hardware Store) was my father's friend from the 1940s and 1950s to the 90's when they were old men and anyone who is in their 50s can remember the trailer truck company of Kendu Bay - the maroon trailers that were operated by an Indian for the longest time...forgot his name. Kenya is 1000% better, safer, more literate, learnt and advance than Uganda. Kenyan don't have that shitty thinking as of ugandans jealous of others. That's why Kenya is too much developed than UG. Accept hard facts.

What are you doing giving glory to Indians for how Kisumu is? No offence here but be careful. The Luo love people so Indians may feel welcome in that city from what I hear. However, Kenyans are complaining that Indians do not pay the blacks well, there are discrimination claims. Please check other bloggers etc.

Indians in Kisumu are not originally from Uganda. The majority came directly from India and settled in Kisumu around 1900.Additionally, many Ugandan Indians moved to Nairobi and Malindi, while others returned to India. Furthermore, Indians in Kisumu do not control 70% of the economy that claim is baseless and incorrect.

What a lopside history of Kisumu. Kindly note this for your record. The Indians in Kisumu did not come from Uganda. The Indians Iddi Amin chased went to Britain. The Indians in Kisumu are descendants of Railway builders who built the line from Mombasa to Kisumu. They are part and parcel of the Kisumu community and have been here since 1901 when the railway reached Port Florence. Tell that guy speaking pseudo history in confidence to get his facts rights. Ong'er.

Asians were the backbone of the Ugandan economy. After Idi Amin ordered them out, everyone knows what happened to the economy.
Running family businesses is not easy and handing them to novices in Uganda during the Amin regime was a very costly lesson.
Now Ugandan’s are maturing and learning to run their economy but the few Asian businesses are still at the top.
