DIY metal minilathe [part9] Is it spinning?

  • Part 9 of the making of my DIY precision mini lathe for metals with electric axes. In this episode the final assembly of the elements that form the carriage, including the apron. To align the cross-slide with the lower sleds that run on the Z-ways I used a self-made machinist level, here you can watch how I've made it: • Machinist level with a...
Unlike in typical manual lathes, here the apron is much simpler as it is directly linked to the lead screw and to the axis driving motor. A double nut, with a particular linkage, is used to adjust the backlash.
Finally the spindle is put in rotation with a couple of DC motors salvaged from washing machines and controlled with a simple driver (AKA ESC, details in this video: • All you want to know f... ).
This work was put on pause for four months because a surge of work in my main job. I found two problems with the spindle's motor. One is a faulty contact somewhere in the control board that makes the motor running irregularly. And the other one is the belt that slips on the shaft of the spindle, because the pulley that was meant to pick the thrust from the belt to transmit it to the shaft is not yet in place. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

You are so close to being able to use your lathe! Good to see you are back. Thank you for making and sharing your journey with us.

    It's alive ! It's alive !
Great job 👍 what a pleasure to see your lathe video !
Quick tip, when you want to measure hole axis distance you don't need to know the diameter, just measure the distance between the right side of the first hole and the right side of the second hole.
    Have some good holyday.

Thanks. About axis distance you're right but for a precise measurement you need a caliper and directly picking the two right sides is not that easy. Happy holidays.

You could also measure the inside of the 2 holes, flip the calipers and measure the ouside. add the 2 together measurements and divide by 2.
Useful for smaller holes. Or holes of different sizes.
I think anyway..... Haven't actually tried it, just thought of it.

See light shine through circuit board and look for cracks in traces.

It's little step, and lot of hard precision work.
Maxim Kachurovskiy got simply electronic lead screw kit .
Thank for wideo, it's Christmas gift for viewers.
    Happy new Year

I watched the video right now, interesting, it is roughly similar to what I think to do. Happy new year.

Been awhile glad to see ya back and really glad it was this episode that lathe is coming along nicely I see you added the lead screw nuts for the carriage how are you planning to engage and disengage it also without half nuts I don’t see thread cutting as a possibility but regardless it’s very impressive and gonna be a very very rigid little machine way better than anything you can buy these days in this size range

No half nuts. This is a special arrangement for a direct drive only motion.

@@AccidentalScience my old lathe has the same mounting point of nut. Lead screw have clutch near spindle to engage/disengage .

Bravo! I was just thinking of your project and how long it has been. Sadly I can't offer any assistance regarding your motor drive but I can make a guess that the circuit board has a broken trace or a dry solder joint. Have a good inspection with continuity / ohm meter. Happy New Year.

Thank you. You guessed right, the board is already fixed now, a video about it will be up on Jan. 2 at 12AM CET. Happy new year.
