    Hi Darren, reading Jon’s comments, he’s a stand up guy, we all have to learn, your enthusiasm for the hobby shines through, yes good job in remaking the part, the mini lathe has some restrictions but they have been modified by many a machinist, good work pal 👴🏻👍

  • @neffk
    @neffk ปีที่แล้ว

    The teeth on the dovetail cutter probably broke when climb milling. Also, you made the right call about re-making the part. It's the head way but the right way.

    • @Darren_Barclay
      @Darren_Barclay  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah am new to machining so finding what works best when milling, climb or conventional. Really I was just been greedy and taking to deep a cut but it probably was on the climb. But yeah I’d spend 2 days making it so when I thought about it I really had to remaking it. Work out lovely, thanks for watching, check out my other videos there may be something you like, I do woodworking and metalworking. Take it easy.

    Hoy, mate, ye ne'er climbmill wi' a dovtail cutter in a manual mill, ye ken? And don't ye even dare scribe wi' them Mitutoyo calibers! Ah've got a pal o' mine at Mitutoyo, and he telt me that every time some numpty scribes wi' a Mitutoyo caliber, a worker kicks the bucket in the factory. Keep up the good graft, mind ye.

    • @Darren_Barclay
      @Darren_Barclay  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lmao, cheers for the comment man, yeah am learning, and in my defence I do have a cheap set of calipers I use to scribe, I try not to use them for that. But I hear you brother.

    Hi Darren, well, ambition in large volumes here, really well done! You really must look to stop climb milling other than for very small finish passes, this is how you lost your dovetail cutter I think! Just trying to be helpful mate and save you some coin. If you can't get the broken tap out, you could always drill another gib screw hole next to the duff one. Well done again! Cheers, Jon

    • @Darren_Barclay
      @Darren_Barclay  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jon thanks for the comment, yeah I was been greedy with the depth of cuts, just pushing it and trying to catch up with myself been 3 days behind. But the endmills powered through some deeps cuts but not the dovetail cutter, and I hear you about climbing it kept wanting to grab so I was always trying to bring it back to the other side but yeah it’s a learning game through my using the mill and different cutters, just learning what rpm works and what speed to push it through and wether to climb or conventional. Looking at getting a bigger motor and a VFD as it’s a bit of a pain changing to belts every time I change cutters. But I do appreciate your comment your advise I always appreciate honest and constructive criticism but it worked out and am well pleased with the outcome, the lathe feels like a totally different machine now, the more I use the mill the more I learn from it.

    • @1crazypj
      @1crazypj ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the same thing.
      Even if you have mill table gibs adjusted real tight the chance of cutter grabbing and destroying itself are high.
      Until I moved to USA, I always heard milling as up cut (moving opposite direction to tool rotation so your cutting 'upwards') and down cut although climb milling seems a better description when tool is attempting to 'climb' over work

    Another great video Darren I find a tap guide is very handy used in the pillar drill or mill drill to prevent snapped taps.There are broken tap removal tools available to aid getting the snapped tap out.

    very nice work! i am planning on doing the same thing! but i also want to build a new saddle for better support. the oem one is meh. so i think making one out of billet that is also wider than the origional and instlal built in center locking setup it should perform much better. Then i want to use a better screw setup for the movement of the cross slide. anywya, thanks a ton for the inspiration and ideas!

      Thanks man am glad you enjoyed the video and found inspiration from it. I had thought about doing the saddle and still might. But I plan on upgrading to a bigger one in time. This one has done me well as a stepping stone into machining. But we’ll see there’s loads of little things that can be done to these lathe to make them better, Take it easy.

    • @mike9500
      @mike9500 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Darren_Barclay yea i'm excited! i have the main billet steel block already for the saddle, and will order a 1" for the cross slide and will also do T-slots as well as make a custom solid tool post. another thing i noticed rebuilding my minilathe when i first got it, there is very little support on the back area where the head sits. i want to build a support bracket that bolts the top and bottom together and will reduce overall-flexing. i'll post videos as well when i get to it. lets share info! :)

    It may be worth trying to minimally extend the quill on a milling machine. And lower the head of the machine to the table as much as possible.
