This Super Mario Bros. version was licensed by Nintendo to Hudson and were developed for personal computers, such as NEC PC-88 and Sharp X1. Supposedly later, was developed for Samsung SPC-1500 in South Korea, but we haven't found no evidence of its existence, not even a screenshot.
This collaboration between the two companies produced some games based on Donkey Kong and Mario's franchises, and here we have a rare, sometimes weird, but adorable "reimagining" of Super Mario Bros.
NOTE: As the hardware of this two platforms is considerably inferior to NES, the game suffers constant slowdowns, specially in Sharp X1, and is unable to offer smooth scrolling, and makes it hard to anticipate to danger situations.

Helloooo
The inferiority of these ports really shows how powerful the NES was back in the day.
Love your PFP, Connor
Hello there, didn’t expect to see you here
@@Huwitto To be fair, didn't expect to see you here either
MaddieXP Lol
True. Friend down the street had an atari and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Then my grandparents got me the NES. Blown away.
MY EYES and MY EARS are burning
Good thing i read your comment. I lowered down the volume before watching it lol
It isn’t even loud and sounds better than the og ngl
this is still better than super mario world port on nes.
@@MuffinHop and better than somari NES
I'm thinkied my hearphones is broken
When John Carmack figured out how to replicate Mario’s scrolling on the PC, he was hailed as a genius. One look at this is proof that he was.
When Mario grabs a Fire flower. He transforms into Luigi
Super Mario = Luigi
@@SIG7Pro Ironic, because in the game for NES, when Luigi grabs a flower, he transforms into Mario
Yes
regardless of the screen scrolling this actually looks pretty fun
Really?
In fact, some people actually made a remake of the game on NES (idk)
Looks dreadful and unfun.
HAHAHAHAHA
really
Because it is fun. NintendoComplete played and reviewed both and gave them both a positive review.
I love how in the Sharp X1 the text corrupts as Mario passes through it. LOL
Time code of it happening?
@@silly_lil_guy No in the video
@@joveaaron-real he is asking for you to send the time in the video of where it happens. like this: 12:00 or 09:32. but i think i already know the correct time code. 14:51 pause the video when mario is overlapping on the WORLD 1-3 or the coin symbol
Edit: the 09:32 was me accidentally linking a better timecode than the one i actually gave when i was just typing random time codes that arent similar
still probably couldn't play this on my computer
Optifine should make it playable
@@marshmallowdub optifine is for minecraft not mario
@@ilikeminecraft1232 If you say so.
Its not playable anyway because you can't go 10 seconds without your eyes caching on fire.
There’s an NES romhack of Super Mario Bros which replaces the sprites and levels with this: romhacking.net/hacks/1011
I had no idea until today that this game even existed. What I have to applaud Hudson for is not trying to directly port _Super Mario Bros_ but instead creating an entirely new game in the spirit of the original specifically for the computers on which it was meant to be played. I'd play either version, but I'd like to see beforehand if there was a way to make the Sharp X1 version run faster without ruining it.
How do you make it run faster?
The Sharp X1 version is slow because you ran the game in 4 megahertz if you run the game in 8 megahertz the game play’s better but the music play’s extremely fast.
Exactly, that's it. I think the game was made to run at 4mhz and wasn't made to be played at 8mhz
How does the NES run so smooth if it runs at less than half the clock speed? (1.79mhz) Is the PPU more powerful on the NES?
Idk but the nes is awesome
@@palaceswitcher I think it's because the NES has in hardware support for screen scrolling and sprite movement, as well as being stronger in other areas. That being said, I don't know the limitations of these systems, so my reasoning could be flawed.
@@palaceswitcher consoles always had graphics accelerators, which were mostly absent on home computers at the time
The screen switching made me laugh. A multiscreen platformer without scrolling, but leaps of faith is a challenge on its own.
I remember seeing Miyamoto saying the earliest concept of the original SMB didn’t have scrolling either, but they realized a bad idea was bad pretty quick.
I think the Sharp X1 is better, has side scrolling and no buggy sprite collision
This game is certainly "Special", alright...
The "special" thing about it is..

2: The Gameplay

Good ol' sharp x1. It runs this like my car. Whenever i try to drive up a steep hill, the tape player goes slower. It is rather surprising they released those games in that state. The x1 was capable of better than this. (though not by much). Excellent video as always.

That is because PCs were less powerful than the Famicom/NES at the time.
@@lucianothewindowsfan True that. Nes was pretty high up the ladder for what a consumer could get in 83-4. It was eclipsed pretty fast but not by a micro...
The game is actually fine without the graphics and sound. I was able to play a remade version with all the power-ups intact through super Mario crossover.
PC88: Stable framerate and nice sound, but "blind moves, progress at your own risk" gameplay
versus
X1: Nice graphics and better "scrolling", but lots of slowdown and awful sound
Tough decision. 🤔
I'll say that the NES patch is the way to go.
For anyone interested, here are the links for the SMB1 patches.
The original hack:

i've recorded a video of super Mario bros 2 the original game : th-cam.com/video/jAjifviWmTM/w-d-xo.html
The nes is WAY better because this was what everyone used to play back in the 80s, and the nes is actually an OFFICIAL patch.
@@tayway210flashbacks9 "Official patch"? I suppose that "official game" or "official release" is what you actually mean. If not, you must be thinking about either Super Mario Bros. 2/The Lost Levels or All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros., as the patches that turn SMB1 into SMB Special are fan made, and fairly recent to boot.
their is a hack of the original mario on the nes where it looks like these versions
(sorry for my bad english)
Why would anyone play that?
@@whytfbuddy4118 Some of these levels are unique to this version, there's a patch you can use on the nes rom to add these levels and the unique power-up as well
The original patch:

Palette modification to more closely resemble the X1 version:

Now I get why it’s in crossover
the definitive version of all 3 SMB1 games tbh
I think its funny how in the SharpX1 version, it slows down when there are two enemies on the screen and then it speeds up when they die.
Seriously it’s painful
Basicamente:
NEC: *SIN SCROLL*
SHARP: *Con Semi-Scroll*
This two ports show what a technical archievement the good old NES was in its days.

Not gonna lie. The music is pretty decent for an 80s pc and the graphics are kinda good. Might wanna play this some day. I’m talking about the

In the NEC PC-8801 / PC-88 version, The koopas look very weird.
The weird-looking koopas are at 0:15.

But I'm not gonna lie the sharp version is way better and the way the screen moves right when you go to the right of the screen instead of a black screen and just appears without you knowing... Very useful!
Super Mario Bros 2/Lost Levels would have been fun on the PC88. A huge leap of faith on each screen ! :D
looks like a version for an old soviet computer
Sharp X1 when bowser breathes 3 fireballs: God please just put me our of my misery
I love how the Koopas have red eyes, almost as if they can’t stand how the game looks either
As offensive to the eyes and ears as this edition of the original Super Mario Bros. may be, I find it interesting that this is probably the first Mario game to depict stars with smiles (0:54); a very uncommon feature in the franchise, and to my knowledge, one not seen since Mario Kart: Double Dash.
The music is awfully slow, kind of depression at times.
I love this video, it's epic :D

Why did this game happened? Back in 1980s, in the prime age of Nintendo Famicom, Big N and Hudson Soft signed some sort of agreement. I recommend video by The Gaming Historian where he talks about SMBS and some other games.
Why does Super Mario look like Luigi in the Sharp version?
Limited colour palette, I suspect. Rather than try to make Fire Mario orange like in the original game, it was easier to just make Fire Mario green since that was a colour likely to be on the screen already.
according to @reillywalker195 limited colors
In Atari 2600, there is an unofficial version, called Princess Rescue, it is very well done, due to the limitations of Atari.

I wonder how it would look if it was played on a composite monitor, like it was designed to... The crazy color patterns were designed to take advantage of flaws in a composite video signal to create more colors than were capable by the computer itself, but the raw output by an emulator like this looks horrible. I can't really find any video of people actually playing it on a PC-8800.

Super Mario Bros Special is an anomaly. Released by Hudson Soft in 1986 for Japanese computers as part of a line of modified NES ports, this game features new level design, power ups, and enemies. Now for my opinion on the games.
NEC PC-8801: *pukes* What is this? Both my eyes and ears are being assaulted. It also doesn’t have the fluent screen scrolling that the NES version is known for. If you want to play any version of this, play the Sharp X1 version. Speaking of which:
Sharp X1: This is the definitive version of this game on PC. The music isn’t terrible, just sometimes slows down, the screen scrolls in a Legend of Zelda style. Most importantly, the graphics are a big step up from the NEC PC-8801.
So those were my thoughts on the ports of this game. Neither of them are that great but the Sharp X1 version is just a better game.
You people need to remember, this was the top tier graphics at that time, to fit super mario bros ported onto a windows 91 computer was a big deal.
These weren't Windows or DOS programs at all
Idk windows 98 or something. I forgot lol
This was released in 1986 for two Japanese PCs that for the record, don't run Microsoft software

The screen lock and flash will make speedruns slower.
Weird Mario from Super Mario Maker officially confirmed to be in SMBS???
Anyone else think that this looks more like a slideshow than a game.
The fact that the NES used to be more powerful than computers scares me on what the next gen consoles might be
