    The actual problem with the framerate and scrolling is because pcs back then didn't have hardware support for smooth scrolling (fast objects moving at the same time on the screen), so all of the scrolling was needed to do in the CPU, wich caused lag and screen tearing, you can see this in a lot of early ms-dos platformers and c64 games, altrough, some programmers maneged to make smooth scrolling in early pcs using various optmization techniques (games such as commander keen and jazz jackrabit).
    A game like the original super mario bros would be imensily difficult to do in the early 80's in these computers since you had a big resolution and various objects in the screen. Altrough, you had giana sisters in the C64, wich was a very well done SMB ripoff with smooth scrolling, but the resolution was smaller and objects were bigger.
    Anyway, nice video!

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was in fact huge discovery of John Carmack who is basically father of PC graphic (he made Commander Keen, Doom and Quake), until introduction of 3D acceleration (so GPU's for PC's) but he is still prominent inventor (developed MegaTexture used in few recent games). Also C64 and mentioned were home computers, so a middle step between console and real office hardware like PC's.

    • @maquinarama1689
      @maquinarama1689 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheRezro Oh yeah, my fault.
      In fact, Commander Keen actually started as a SMB3 Port to PC, but Nintendo didn't allow the Port so they developed Commander keen

      the PC video cards could always feed the monitor at the speed the monitor needed,
      yet getting pixels from CPU to the video card was slow.
      NES video chip was also slow at getting data from CPU but had flexibility when feeding dots to the TV.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @NanoPi
      So? Not the point. Consoles used number of tricks what make graphic good, without need of calculating stuff. It is why something like a "sprite" is a thing. Console CPU didn't need calculate many thing as other chips make work for it. But on the other hand PC could generate everything in specific resolution and color palet if it has enough time to do so, when consoles were highly limited by those tricks and struggle doing anything beside them.

    That Sharp X1 might be the coolest looking PC I've ever seen

    • @Nukle0n
      @Nukle0n 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a real PC though, at least not by the 80's standards of the word, it's a home computer or "micro" as they called it, which there were hundreds of, but they were all eventually eliminated by the PC and the Mac.

    • @Longlius
      @Longlius 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Uh, it was a PC, in that it was a 'personal computer', as opposed to one that had to be timeshared at a university. What you mean is that it wasn't an IBM compatible. At the time, however, it would have been good competition for an IBM PC XT.
      Also, the IBM PC and Mac were both micros as well. "Microcomputer" comes from the fact that they used microprocessors instead of discrete TTL circuitry like the earlier minicomputers (the aformentioned timeshared systems) used.

    YESSSS!!! I've been wanting these games to get some coverage for so long!
    I've played the PC-88 versions of most of these, and from what I can tell, the PC-88 version of Ice Climber is probably better than the X1 version, I mean, at least I have an easier time with it than I do with the NES original, but the X1 version of SMB Special seems to be A LOT better than the PC-88 version...
    The PC-88 version is SO BAD! The screen doesn't even scroll like this one, it cuts to black for like, half a second, and then the next screen appears, there's A LOT of colour-clash, which is not an issue in any other PC-88 game I've ever played, the physics are rubbish, it's awful!

    Interesting to see how computers had lower graphical capabilities than consoles in that era. Nowadays it is completely the opposite. These japanese pc game ports looked choppy and bad compared to the nes originals.

      Honestly as far as I know it's been pretty much back and forth until around the time Steam came up.
      Even the PS3 upon its launch was better than most gaming PCs techwise IIRC.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, but only from the 90's. PC's originally didn't even try compete with consoles because they were designed for office use, and mentioned in this video aren't even true PC's but a home computers.

    • @ChristopherSobieniak
      @ChristopherSobieniak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was standard of the day. IBM PC's for example couldn't do what consoles were designed to do for example.

    • @neoxnet
      @neoxnet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      iD Software ported Super Mario 3 to the PC to show that PCs could be just as capable for showcasing platformers as their console counterparts not to mention they wanted to strike a business deal with Nintendo. We all know how that went...

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Kurt Angerdinger
      For clarity I presume that you meant that: For everything else beside the games NES was worthless, for everything beside abominable graphic PC's were the thing. And home computers (so one mentioned in the video) were generally worthless for everything even if they have better graphic then PC and more power then consoles. But jack of all trades in this case... Only after death of home computing PC start to be seen as possible gaming platform what impact development of graphic. But still not dedicated. It was usually more like "afer finishing office work DooM release your stress". Still main reason why those platforms have so many games was that they didn't need licences. For many small developers and sometimes individual people it was good enough trade, even if market was technically smaller.
