Giving the fact that this is pretty much the only RPG the N64 had, the game is pretty well know I think. I also read somewhere that the game sold better in Japan than OOT, but I couldn’t verify that Info when I searched for it just now. There is also a fight over if this game is trash or a masterpiece, one reason for it is that you cannot save your progress if you don’t own a memory card, and back than on the N64 I remember almost no one had one, because 99% of all games had batteries inside to save.
Thank you for running Quest 64! So many memories! This game destroyed my first N64 controller when I rubber-banded the joystick and kept Brian running overnight in town to level up agility. Good times.
(On most N64 games) you can hold the analog stick in a direction while the game is booting up and it will think it's the default / neutral, so letting go of the stick in physical-neutral will make the game think you are holding it in the other direction from its "digital neutral". Now go level up without rubber bands lol.
Rented this from blockbuster once with NO memory card. Never made it past the first boss. Cool to see it again. Thanks for explaining Everything too because I had no clue what I was doing back then 🤣
This was one of my favorite "unknown" games from when I was a kid. My first run I tried balancing all the elements and was severely underpowered by mid game, so I made a hard decision to start over and just maxed aero/air which worked much better. Such a hard game but so fun. I also like that the battle theme music is so similar to FF7's lol
the last time I played this on my n64, an item in my inventory got corrupted somewhere halfway through the game, so the game would crash whenever I opened my items
LOL, the only thing I remembered about this game was using magic barrier + avalanche over and over to breeze through everything. Glad to see that strat being used for the bosses
@@XionEternum minor point of contention, almost no n64 games ran at 50/60 fps (F Zero X might be the only one). But yes, the PAL version would run at 5/6ths the speed of NTSC
I used to rent this game (just like everybody here i guess lol) and i... i never thought this game was bad! I remember liking the music and the rpg aesthetics so much. Never finished as well ofc 🤣
I remember as a kid a few friends and I were obsessed with this game, and we came up with our own storylines about the game because the game didn't really have much of one.
I remember playing this game as a kid. Didn’t get real far cuz I did not understand the game mechanics but I loved how the game looked. Glad to see a cool Speedrun!
I got this game when it released. Took me forever to beat it. I remember there was an amazing place to level defence from the slimes that shot lightning bolts in the fire area
We had this game when I was a kid, but our n64 memory pack was defective or something, and would randomly erase itself completely. This meant we always had to try to beat this game in one sitting or leave the N64 turned on for days while we played through. The furthest we ever got was around Guilty or just beyond. Knowing speedrun strats would have been great back then, we might have been able to finish it!
I remember having this game as a kid and having quite a lot of fun with it, despite not understanding anything, since it was in English and that’s not my native language 😅 Thanks for running it, gave me quite some nostalgia ❤️
I love this game. Must have beat it five or six times as a kid. The element and battle system is great. So much potential here. Those bosses and caves can piss right off though.
1. Paper Mario 2. Ogre Battle 64 3. Hybrid Heaven 4. Holy Magic Century / Quest 64 5. Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage That's 5 RPGs in the west, and 7 if you count Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2.
This is definitely one of the great gems of the n64. I would love to see a sequel or remake on the switch. I still play this every few years. Never really had much trouble with first boss. But I remember that one in the forest you fight in a small ring and I believe they used wind spells and they could be tough.
This game was so punishing as a kid. I did the even spread of elements too. I remember being actually scared to get encounters lol. Thanks for the run was amazing. It's telling how rushed was as an adult. It was fun still as a kid who had no idea what was going on for the game.
I love this game.....but i also hated it cause i never figured out the mechanic for increasing atk, hp, mp, def or speed until i grew up wayyyyy later in life and repicked this game up. Still nostalgic as hell to play.
I played this game ONCE when I was a little kid. I rented it thinking it was interesting. I never got it figured out and kept dying in the first village and never got further than that. If I had managed to figure out what the fuck I was suppose to do in this game to progress, would it have been a game worth buying?
Some things I picked up about this game from watching this. The sound byte when getting items from chests reminds me of a sound byte they used in Golden Sun. Lots of long distance running to locations with a stubby-legged character, takes up a majority of the time just travelling to locations. The spirits kind of look like they represent four basic elements of Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. Still not sure of the intended mechanic of them, what is their purpose?
I did eventually beat this game during a rent. I remember Mammon at least. I also remember running into NPCs and thinking "oh yeah, party members!" and then they didn't join. I was like... they were set up like they were going to join but then didn't. I remember feeling pretty confused. And I remember grinding out water heavily because that's all I ended up using. Sounds like I made the right decision, lol. Edit: Also... didn't we get a memory card with the system? I swore we did...
Main reason is for more damage for Avalanche, the all element levels affect each other, but adjacent (in this case fire/water) have a stronger affect. Secondary reason is for compression which we would use for an OOB at the beginning of Limelin area
Why does a game like this even need a memory card? It doesn't save more stats than other games, does it? 1 number per ability, maybe 8 in total, 2 byte each, and 1 number per element stat, 1 byte each, 1 byte for the safe point. About the same number of hidden stats. Most probably take away the chests and spirits. So almost 100 spirits, and probably a multiple of chests, so about 500 spirits and chests together maybe. But that's still not more than the chests, etc. you collect in Zelda, right?
This game is the most expensive in my collection, was like 150DM, were not able to save (you needed a memcard) and it was ultra hard, i never completely beaten it.
Just started the video, but I am a little confused about how it all starts. What is the lore? Battle system? I am sorry, just felt like this went way too technical way too quickly.
Its a speedrun bro. Not lore background video. He's going to rescue his dad and visits a lot of rehashed towns and npcs where stats slightly increase over time. The lore of the game is laughably bad and not worth discussing anyways. Look it up if you want.

Thanks again for having me on to show off Quest 64!
I am leaving a comment here just to say thanks to speedrunner for speedrunning game thats not well known and giving positives vibe during the run.

@Komory ogre battle 64, paper Mario, the last mage, hybrid heaven are other n64 rpgs. Just pointing that out

I recall renting this game when I was young and nobody had ever heard of it! I'm glad to see that other people played it too.
This game was such a fever dream. Uncanny valley models and creepy vibes galore!

my exact experience

I did the same thing, but I got stuck on the guy guarding the bridge.
Gotta love games with protagonists that have different names depending on what country its sold
Try Advance Wars sometime, where the characters have not just completely different names but personalities depending on region
the last time I played this on my n64, an item in my inventory got corrupted somewhere halfway through the game, so the game would crash whenever I opened my items

I had this but it was called Holy Magic Century in the UK (and possibly other places). I never realised Quest 64 was the same game.
Know if it was 50fps which was a PAL standard? I'm wondering if emulated that the PAL version may be scaled up to 60fps from 50, and run 20% faster.
Aussie here, It was Holy Magic Century, and one of the games a never had but always rented
@@XionEternum minor point of contention, almost no n64 games ran at 50/60 fps (F Zero X might be the only one). But yes, the PAL version would run at 5/6ths the speed of NTSC
I never understood this game when I was younger but now that I'm older I'm glad I found it again and a speedrun at that
I used to rent this game (just like everybody here i guess lol) and i... i never thought this game was bad! I remember liking the music and the rpg aesthetics so much. Never finished as well ofc 🤣
Great music

Hard-core gamer: I've spent hours just resetting there.
Nice video BTW! Great narration and skill thank you for posting.
SO satisfying to see this get destroyed! I was mad at myself when I overslept and missed this live.
I wish i could be a kid again man.. The music in this game... Damn.
Awesome runner & couch commentary!
I got this game when it released. Took me forever to beat it. I remember there was an amazing place to level defence from the slimes that shot lightning bolts in the fire area
I loved this game as a kid
I loved this game when I was a kid.
Love this game, I donated for this run, thanks Bing!
I rented this so many times and never beat it. The glitches were cool!

My boy Jazzy making his first "appearance" at GDQ!!!

Thanks for running it, gave me quite some nostalgia ❤️
Don't feel bad, English is my native language and I still didn't understand how this game worked.
Loved the run, great to see the game getting love!
I love this game. Must have beat it five or six times as a kid. The element and battle system is great. So much potential here. Those bosses and caves can piss right off though.
Quest 64 was an awesome game for the time it came out. Be gone haters!
10:53 for death dupe success.
Wish Id have realized SGDQ was going on, I loved quest growing up
Fun Fact: Japanese exclusives bump the total of N64 RPGs from 4 to 7.
1. Paper Mario
2. Ogre Battle 64
3. Hybrid Heaven
4. Holy Magic Century / Quest 64
5. Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage
That's 5 RPGs in the west, and 7 if you count Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2.
This may seem weird but this game would always give me 4 o'clock afternoon vibes
I almost quit this series after 63, but damn they knocked it out of the park with 64.
i love this game

they should remake this game for switch

Learned the rock shower hardlock after just testing it on a whim. Pissed me off somethin bad
loved this game. never beat it without cheats.

When Avalanche isn't your friend.
Almond Green is my pick for the color question.

They level up your magic of that element, I believe

Those characters were meant to be party members but that had to be scrapped due to the games troubled development
I remember I got really disturbed by "The World of Mammon"s soundtrack... really bizarre music
Can you clone the spirits on the N64?
Yes you can
I have a hate/love relationship with this game. It is such a time sink, fun to search for the spirits and grind for stats but the rng is so punishing.
I was looking for the reasoning why you chose fire after water and earth. How come?
Main reason is for more damage for Avalanche, the all element levels affect each other, but adjacent (in this case fire/water) have a stronger affect. Secondary reason is for compression which we would use for an OOB at the beginning of Limelin area

Do I need to play the other 63 Quest games to understand the plot?
how is he getting so many levels outta bosses? is it another dupe glitch?
Cool controller. Is it all original?
Not entirely, only thing different is a Steelstick thumbstick, which is just so nice
I hate this game but I love this speedrun
I beat this game as a 8 year old kid without a game shark. My Mom helped me though. Moms don't count as cheating.
I remember playing this when I was about 6
God, what an awful game................. Love it
i played this game as a kid... hated it.
