      100% agree Julien. The choice of Katie as my model for this session wasn't a coincidence (obviously). I knew the look I wanted and I knew Katie would take my light and make it special!

    Great video as always Gavin Hoey.
    Question!
    When using my Godox SK400II, to shoot lowkey photos, the metering system in Olympus Pen Epl1 changes the exposure.
    How do I stop it from doing that?
    I usually just leave it in "ESP"
    Thanks for your assistance!

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Marcus. If the camera is set to Manual mode then the metering system can safely be ignored (it's telling you the room exposure, not the flash) and will be most likely telling you it thinkis the scene is -3 or more stops underexposed. But if you're in any other mode or auto ISO on manual mode (not sure the EPL-1 had that) then the exposure will change with your framing and there's not much you can do other the use manual mode.

    Not sure why no comments yet. I like the effects with the smoke. My daughter got a star and nebula projecter for her room for Christmas I thought that would look good taking pictures with that and some smoke. I might just try it and see. Was wondering when you have the light behind the beautiful model and smoke is there a way to light up the model a little bit more so we can see her without washing out the effects from behind. Hopefully you have a wonderful day.

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Travis. Anything is possible but the more lights you add (especially with smoke) the higher the risk of cross contamination. To achieve your idea I'd suggest trying a directional light source such as a snooted light or gridded light.

    Gavin, Id like to make a suggestion to you and all the other Adorama contributors. Looking at photo post from people over the last year on social media I came up with an idea for a series. The Average Joe/Jill family photographer, (name it that you would like.) But it focuses on the events and holidays of the year. Has tips and tricks for how to take better Birthday, graduation, Homecoming, Prom, Easter, 4th of July, Christmas. (you get the idea) for the everyday family photo buff. But here is the twist. for each event/occasion show it taken with average gear, better gear and then enthusiast gear. Everybody does studio portrait videos. Just a thought. Keep up the good work.
    P.S. Im sending this to several of the Adorama contributors.

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Jeff. I'm using the 19 degree lens BUT I'd swap it right now for the 36 degree lens if I could. The 19 degree lens really needs more room then I have in my home studio (15'x15') so the wider results of the 36 degree lens would be my personal choice. Hindsight, such a wonderful thing 🙄

    My main issue with the Light Blaster is that the film holder is designed specifically for slide film. You can print your own custom patterns on transparencies, but the slide holder restricts light to a 24mm x 36mm rectangle, and it's an awkward limit for a piece of lighting equipment.
    You need to do a bit of DIY if you want to take full advantage of the entire image circle of the lens (43mm across for normal lenses for full frame, even larger if it's a tilt/shift lens) or if you want more gradual light falloff via the lens' own vignetting.

    Could someone share something about behind the scenes for photography videos like these? I subscribe to several photography TH-cam channels and they all are able to have models appear in their videos helping them. Are these usually just their friends, or do they hire models to help out with videos, or are they employees of the photo studios? I'm not sure a typical way to find models for general photography practicing as I'm still a beginner and it's just my hobby currently.
