- We recently purchased a Mercedes Vito 2009 (111, OM646) 2.1 CDI Diesel van, it had trouble starting when warm and also you could smell exhaust fumes when driving so decided to investigate and found that we had more than one 'chuffing injector' or leaky injector seal causing the problems, smell and a huge build up of carbon around the injectors/wiring/pipes that had to be chipped off carefully and then vacuumed (don't use sprays, chip at it) so we could get access to remove the injectors and replace the failed copper washer seals. This is sometimes known as 'Black Death' due to 'Chuffing Injectors'.
We made this video showing the process from start to finish, hopefully it's helpful if you have the same problem and we've tried to include as much information as possible but if you have any questions let us know thanks. This information also applies to the sprinter vans too.
You will need quite a few tools, time and patience and we did replace the leak off pipe along with injector electrical plug connector as they were toast brittle and broken. The tools you'll need are: a torque wrench with degrees for (7Nm + x 2 90 degrees turns for injector bolts), injector reseating tool and a slide hammer to remove injectors plug other misc items.

Great video very informative will help me next week!👍
Best video I’ve seen👍
Great video well informed
The injector stubs have tiny o-rings on them, if they go hard the leak off pipe clips have a habit of coming off spraying diesel everywhere.
thanks for the advice, something to watch out for
Well done lads. That looked a really tricky job. Mines started to smell in the van recently. Praying it isnt as bad as yours looked. Mines an 07 with 170k miles so bit concerned lol
Thanks, if you can smell it, it's usually a sign.
@@DanielJohnHowTo Took cover off today. Injector 1 is chuffing. Looks like i caught it early. Still a mess to clean and im just doing the 1 not the other 3 🤣
@@TimmmmmyD good to hear it's not too bad, makes the job a bit easier.
What brand is the injector? Want to make sure I get the correct thread for slide hammer. Trying to find the one with the universal joint you used
Would really like a vid on removing the windscreen surround
there's one on the channel, in a different video
Hi thanks for the video, really helping me prepare to do my van. What tool did you use to remove the injectors? im having trouble finding a flexible puller. thanks
thanks, it's a slide hammer kit you can get it from amazon.
Acetone / nail varnish remover washes it away like water
with the new plugs does it need re coding or is that only if you change injectors? in the middle of doing mine and find this video very helpful indeed also any links for the plugs?
Not sure about the coding, as we just used the old injectors and as for the plugs you can buy them just as a plug that you fit or preterminated with wires which we just did with some solder/heatshrink and no issues so far www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BM81WQ3V
Thank you for taking time to reply
Hello, I am interested in buying a Viano 2.2 like the one in the video, how are the ones that have an automatic transmission? Thanks for the video.
Hiya they are Brilliant Vans very reliable. I’ve got my Vito 2.2 cdi 2008 with 239000 miles and still going strong they can go easy up to 500 thousand miles
not easy well done
Morning, mine was far worse, to the extent that most of the seal had homogenised with the diesel! What did you use to get it so clean?
mr muscle over cleaner, left overnight covered with tin foil as mentioned in the video
@@DanielJohnHowTo apologies, I had no volume as She was trying to sleep..... Now have the unenviable task of removing a sheared bolt.
Now mine does not start, fuel arrived until high pressure pump, not passed by. What is wrong? Can bleed correctly
it's most likely air, we had to bleed ours via obd2 reader tablet but you can cycle the ignition several times and it should work
@@DanielJohnHowTo what obd2, I have only Delphi
Should you not have used new injector bolts ?
we did as they are stretch bolts.
